The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System

Chapter 86: Enter! The Private Auction, Encountering a Troublemaking Lu Chaoyang

She was going to eat her fill.

"This is a private appraisal event, anyway. There’s no dress code. It’s hosted by a chairman I’m pretty close with. We’re all here, so just have fun!"

She could tell what he meant: if anything happened, someone would have her back. She could just enjoy herself.

Gu Shengsheng nodded. "Thank you."

As soon as she walked in, she understood why they weren’t allowed to bring their phones in for live streaming.

Nothing that happened in this place could ever be allowed to leak. Gu Shengsheng had already spotted three or four collectors who had brought beautiful young women with them.

It was obvious at a glance that they weren’t their wives. For instance, the famous collector Mr. Chen Gang had always cultivated a public image of a deeply devoted husband on social media.

His wife’s hair was already graying, but the young woman he had his arm around now looked to be about nineteen.

Gu Shengsheng watched them. This kind of hypocrisy—one face in public, another in private—seemed to be the norm in this circle.

She saw many faces around her, some she recognized, some she didn’t. Even a major figure like Zhao Dehai was here, which meant the host of this private appraisal event must have a very powerful background.

Gu Shengsheng turned her head and asked, "Mr. Pan, doesn’t that Chen Gang have a wife?"

"Who’s hosting this private banquet? Can they all be this shameless?"

Pan Bowen sighed. "You’re still young. Since we’re able to get into this banquet, it’s a given that no information will get out. Aren’t all these men like this when they’re out and about?"

"As for who’s hosting, you’ll know when they arrive."

Just then, Chen Gang happened to walk over to greet them.

He said with a smile, "Pan, you’re here too? I just saw you talking to Zhao Dehai. Doesn’t that guy look down on us businessmen the most?"

He seemed to be making small talk, but he was actually probing the relationship between Zhao Dehai and Pan Bowen.

But who here wasn’t shrewd?

Pan Bowen smiled. "Just a nodding acquaintance, no real connection. We just happened to run into each other. Who’s like you, acting like an old friend to everyone you see?"

"Look at you, new girl by your side again?"

Hearing this, Chen Gang draped an arm over Pan Bowen’s shoulder. "What are you talking about? The only one by my side is your sister-in-law!"

"These girls, they’re all just after my money, wanting a taste of the glory that comes with my status. In the end, isn’t your sister-in-law the only one who truly loves me?"

’Could it be that this is all just an act for the occasion?’ Gu Shengsheng wondered. ’Does he actually love his wife the most?’

The moment she had that thought, she knew she had overestimated men.

Chen Gang continued, "My wife, back in the day, was a top student from Qing University. And from such a good family, a family of scholars, you know?"

"And yet, didn’t she still end up following me, doing this and that, washing clothes, cooking, all of it? Now she handles everything at home, big and small. She rolls up her sleeves and makes me a whole feast—I won’t eat unless she makes seven or eight dishes for a single meal."

"Now that’s what I call loving me! This is how a wife should be."

Gu Shengsheng felt disgusted hearing this.

Someone else had sacrificed so much for him, and he was using it as social capital to brag about.

Her marrying down to him was just a way for him to show off his own status. Was he really so captivated by this feeling of having a steadfast wife at home while the red flags fluttered outside?

At this thought, Gu Shengsheng stood up.

She said, "If your esteemed wife knew that her sacrifices meant nothing more than this to you, she would probably regret ever marrying you."

Chen Gang turned to look at her, a little surprised. It had been a long time since he’d seen someone so bold.

He pointed at Gu Shengsheng and said, "You, little lady, who brought you in here? You’ve got a sharp tongue. What gives you the right to talk back to me?"

Pan Bowen introduced her, "She was brought here by Mr. Zhao Dehai."

"..." Chen Gang was speechless for a moment. "For Mr. Zhao’s sake, I won’t hold this against you."

"For us appraisers, arguments should be settled with skill. It’s not about a few sharp words," she said with a smile. "I hope that next time, I’ll have the chance to test my skills against yours, Mr. Chen."

Chen Gang laughed so hard he nearly cried. "Fine, fine, fine!"

"Young people these days are so arrogant, they think they’re gods! They’ll provoke anyone, compare themselves to anyone."

Gu Shengsheng couldn’t be bothered to respond to such words. Men like him just disgusted her.

She then followed Pan Bowen and sat down, as the banquet was about to begin.

Right on time, a very young man stood on the stage, his eyes full of smiles. "Something came up at the company, so my father couldn’t make it. I had to come in his place."

As he spoke, Pan Bowen explained, "That’s He Chen, the sole heir of the He Group, the biggest conglomerate in the country right now. Chairman He is really something for letting such a naive kid come here."

"I was afraid I couldn’t handle this alone, so today I invited President Lu of the Lu Group to join me," He Chen continued, clearly nervous.

And so, Gu Shengsheng saw Lu Chaoyang standing beside him.

She’d heard the Lu Group was failing and headed for disaster. Had Lu Chaoyang already managed to get in with the He Group this quickly? And they seemed to be on good terms, too.

Pan Bowen said, "Miss Gu, you’re the one who married into the Lu Family for good luck, right?"

It was normal for these big bosses to know her identity, so Gu Shengsheng didn’t feel uncomfortable. She nodded. "Yes. Lu Chaoyang is my brother-in-law, but we don’t have a close relationship."

"Haha, I know. Miss Gu, we’re talking to you because you’re part of the Antique Appraisal World, not because you’re a member of the Lu Family."

"That Lu Family clan, ever since the former Family Head disappeared, they’ve fallen straight from the top. They’re already in slow decline."

"Miss Gu, while you still have the chance, it might be better to make other plans. Of course, this is just a suggestion."

Gu Shengsheng nodded, indicating that she had taken his words to heart.

After He Chen finished speaking, he and Lu Chaoyang sat in the center. It was obvious that He Chen was very awkward and scared.

He looked completely unprepared.

Fortunately, Lu Chaoyang was constantly by his side, quietly explaining things, which seemed to put him at ease.

Before long, the enormous space was filled with all sorts of antiques and gemstones.

The display stands were quickly set up, all of them quite exquisite.

At first, everyone was filled with curiosity, circling the displays and wandering around to see if there were any treasures.

He Chen said with a smile, "These are from my dad’s collection, acquired both at home and abroad. They’re all exceptionally fine pieces."

"My father knew that collectors and experts like yourselves would surely be interested, so he gathered everyone together to see if you find anything suitable to take with you."

After speaking, he glanced at Lu Chaoyang. Lu Chaoyang smiled and said, "He Chen lacks experience, but he is sincere. With me guiding him, we can definitely make this event a success."
