The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System
Chapter 94: Chu Country Copper Coin, 100 BucksSeeing their serious expressions, Gu Shengsheng was a bit taken aback.
Then she smiled. "I know."
"When I came to look at the deed before, I saw the cemetery on that hill."
"The living are more scheming than the dead. Living here should be peaceful!"
Gu Shengsheng wasn’t afraid of it, and neither were Mrs. Lu Sr. and Lu Linlin. In fact, they thought it would be peaceful and no one would bother them here!
Besides, Mrs. Lu Sr. had someone check the feng shui. They said the area was auspicious and wouldn’t clash with the cemetery.
The Bean Juice Shop Owner was incredulous. "Young lady, no one dares to come near this place. You’re spending a fortune to build a house here—will your family agree to it?"
"What are you going to do if they refuse to move in?"
Gu Shengsheng smiled. "We’ve already discussed it. It’s fine."
"My grandma even said that since it’s a cemetery, when she passes away, the burial plot won’t be far."
"I agree. The early bird gets the worm. I can even find a good spot and claim it. Otherwise, I won’t even be able to afford a burial plot for my ashes when I die."
The Bean Juice Shop Owner and the young woman from the land bureau stared at each other, speechless.
They wanted to persuade her otherwise but didn’t know what to say.
"..." The main reason was that they couldn’t find any fault with what Miss Gu was saying.
’It really would be convenient after death.’
Still, the Bean Juice Shop Owner sighed. "How should I put this? This place has been a graveyard for many, many years. It’s probably not a good idea to build a house and live here."
"But you seem like an odd one yourself, little lady. Maybe two negatives will make a positive, and living here will actually bring you prosperity."
Things like this were impossible to predict; it all came down to a person’s individual fate.
The young woman from the land bureau scratched her head. "This is the first time I’ve ever heard ’the early bird gets the worm’ used like that. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to use that phrase the same way again."
Then she said, "Miss Gu, if you’re really sure, we can sell you all the surrounding wasteland as well. There’s also an abandoned villa. A construction crew was supposed to renovate it, but the project just fizzled out."
Gu Shengsheng looked over at the abandoned villa and noticed a few workers in hard hats.
She asked curiously, "If it fizzled out, the construction company must be out of money, right? So why are there still a few workers there?"
The young woman from the land bureau didn’t know either.
The Bean Juice Shop Owner threw up his hands. "It’s nothing! They’re probably just scavenging for scrap to sell. I saw them selling electrical cables and copper wire down the street from my shop. It gets them a bit of pocket money."
"They probably have some other odds and ends, but I didn’t pay much attention."
With that, Gu Shengsheng had a general idea of the situation.
She wasn’t one to meddle in others’ business, so she didn’t ask any more questions and signed the contract with the young woman from the land bureau.
The staff had come prepared for Gu Shengsheng’s business, bringing the contract and all the necessary paperwork. All that was left was to process the property deed tomorrow.
Gu Shengsheng didn’t hesitate. She was a person of action and had no regrets, so the paperwork was completed quickly.
After finishing up, she decided to walk around by herself and think about how to design the layout for the empty land.
Her greatest wish was to own her own house, and her second greatest wish was for every corner of it to be just the way she liked.
Gu Shengsheng wandered around for a good while. Feeling a bit tired, she decided to head to the street market to buy a snack.
As it happened, she saw the two workers she’d noticed poking around the abandoned villa earlier. They were setting up a street stall.
It was just around six or seven in the evening, after the city inspectors had gone off duty, so they were starting to set up their stall.
Gu Shengsheng saw that the items on their small table weren’t just copper wire and scrap metal.
There were even things that had a sense of age to them.
Gu Shengsheng looked at the neatly arranged copper coins and some miscellaneous, unidentifiable bracelets.
She asked curiously, "Did you find these at the abandoned villa?"
"...Uh, yes." They stammered, whether out of fear or for some other reason, it was hard to tell.
Gu Shengsheng cupped the copper coins in her palm, feeling their weight.
There was a whole string of them, all of which had been scrubbed clean.
Before she could say anything, an uncle at the next stall spoke up. "Young lady, don’t buy their stuff. What’s the point of buying washed coins!"
"Come look at my things! I’ve got the good stuff here. The patina is still on them. You can tell they’re genuine antiques."
Gu Shengsheng glanced over and smiled. "For a Ming or Qing dynasty copper coin, ten yuan is cheap, but twenty is too much. A mix of real and fake isn’t exactly rare."
The two workers were clearly new to running a stall. Hearing Gu Shengsheng’s comment, one of them immediately said, "We thought... we thought we got them dirty by handling them. So we washed them with water."
"We didn’t realize you weren’t supposed to just wash antiques."
Gu Shengsheng nodded. "As the saying goes, the older a coin is, the more good fortune and wealth it accumulates. Of course, it can also accumulate the yin energy of bad luck."
"So whether it brings fortune or disaster depends on its own destiny. Finding it is destiny, and not finding it is also destiny."
As she explained this, she continued to examine the Copper Coin in her hand.
Although it looked quite worn and lacked any patterns around the edge, at a glance it resembled a coin from the Ming or Qing dynasties. That’s why the other stall owners hadn’t noticed anything unusual.
What Gu Shengsheng found strange were the characters on it.
’Those characters... they look like script from the Chu Country. If they’re really from the Chu Country, then this is interesting.’
The two workers in hard hats exchanged a look. Seeing that Gu Shengsheng seemed very interested, they handed her another coin. "We haven’t touched this one. Why don’t you take a look at it?"
"We scrubbed the other two with a brush."
Gu Shengsheng sighed. As expected, their handling of the artifact had been too rough; many of the key features had been scrubbed away.
When she saw this freshly unearthed copper coin, she was stunned. On the face of the large coin were four characters identifying it as a type of ancient spade money, and on the back were two characters denoting its value.
It had probably been buried underground for a very long time.
As a result, it was covered entirely in green patina.
Gu Shengsheng asked directly, "How much are you selling these for each?"
"How about all three for 100 yuan?" one of them ventured.
Gu Shengsheng didn’t even haggle and bought them on the spot.
Afterward, the worker even added Gu Shengsheng’s contact information, saying he’d let her know if he dug up anything else good in the future.
She readily agreed.
As she walked away with the three coins, the other stall owner called after her sarcastically, "You definitely got ripped off on that deal!"
"Even if they were real Qing Dynasty coins, they’d be worth a dozen or so yuan at most. A hundred yuan for three? You must be loaded!"
Hearing his sarcastic tone, Gu Shengsheng just smiled and said, "As a matter of fact, I am."
"..."
Leaving the chattering stall owners behind, Gu Shengsheng started to think more carefully. ’If they can really dig up copper coins in that area, does that mean there’s an ancient tomb there?’
