The Rebirth of Humanity

Chapter 31: The First Trade

Only a few days had passed since the Heavenly Lock was lifted.

Yet the impact of that moment was already spreading rapidly throughout Gandalia.

For the first time in fifty years...

Zeta was open.

The spatial pathways were accessible.

And ships could once again leave human territory and reach the outside world.

And yet...

Humanity did not move toward war.

It did not send its armies to conquer the neighboring territories.

Nor did it begin displaying its military might.

Instead, it chose another path.

Trade.

Within the Sovereign Palace...

Fafnir sat in a vast hall.

Before him was an enormous map of Gandalia, displaying the spatial routes, known trading regions, and the areas with which humanity had lost contact thousands of years ago.

Behind him stood the Four Pillars.

Fafnir spoke calmly:

"Humanity has returned to the world."

Then he raised his eyes from the map.

"But returning does not mean that we must go to war with everyone."

Silence descended.

He continued:

"The first thing we need is resources."

He looked toward Eleanor.

"Open the trade routes."

Eleanor nodded.

"What do you want us to purchase?"

Fafnir answered:

"Everything that can benefit humanity."

Then he began listing them:

"Rare minerals."

"Heavenly ores."

"Spiritual herbs."

"Treasure capable of strengthening the bodies or energies of humans."

"Materials required for the construction of ships and weapons."

"And any rare resource that cannot be produced in sufficient quantities within Zeta."

He paused for a moment.

Then said:

"We do not want them to know how much we possess."

"Nor do we want them to know what we are doing with these resources."

Thorin asked:

"What about the fleet?"

Fafnir looked at him.

"There is no need to display it."

Then he added:

"Trade ships only."

Everyone understood what he meant.

Humanity would not reveal its military strength.

It would not give the outside world the impression that it was preparing for war.

It would present itself simply as a power seeking trade.

Valor said:

"I will prepare the trade ships."

Morgana added:

"And I will organize the trading points and handle dealings with the merchants."

As for Eleanor, she said:

"I will prepare a list of the resources we need and determine the appropriate quantities and prices."

Fafnir nodded.

"Begin."

Several days later...

The first human trade ships departed from Zeta.

They were not as massive as the warships.

Nor did they carry heavy weapons.

They had been designed for transportation and trade.

Even so...

Their technology was clearly advanced.

They moved through space at a steady speed.

Several other ships followed behind them.

It was not a military convoy.

It was a trade convoy.

For the first time in fifty years...

Human ships crossed the borders of Zeta.

On board were a number of merchants, officials, and representatives of the newly established commercial institutions.

Their objective was simple.

Purchase resources.

In one of the trading regions near Zeta...

There was a massive city teeming with various races.

Ships entered and departed constantly.

Merchants haggled over prices.

Shops displayed all manner of treasures.

Auctions were held regularly.

And the banners of numerous races fluttered above the buildings.

But when the human ships appeared...

Several gazes immediately turned toward them.

"Humans?"

one merchant asked in astonishment.

"Aren't they from Zeta?"

"Yes."

"I thought Zeta was sealed."

"It was."

"Then... the lock has been lifted."

Whispers spread rapidly.

The appearance of humans in the markets was not an ordinary occurrence.

Fifty years had passed since communication with them had become nearly impossible.

For many, this was the first time they had seen a human merchant in decades.

But the human merchants paid no attention to the stares.

They disembarked from their ships.

And headed directly toward the markets.

At first...

The dealings were cautious.

No one knew the true condition of humanity.

No one knew how many humans lived in Zeta.

Nor the size of its army.

Nor the size of its fleet.

Nor the extent of its power.

Therefore...

The other merchants were cautious in their dealings.

But the humans asked for nothing unusual.

They wanted resources.

Nothing but resources.

One human merchant entered a massive shop specializing in spiritual treasures.

He examined the list of available goods.

Then said:

"I want these herbs."

He pointed toward several varieties.

"And these spiritual stones."

Then he pointed toward another chest.

"And these heavenly ores."

The shopkeeper raised an eyebrow.

"All of this?"

The merchant answered:

"Yes."

"And how much do you want?"

The merchant named a large quantity.

Silence fell.

The shopkeeper stared at him in astonishment.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

Then he added:

"And we will return to purchase more."

That simple statement was enough to pique the merchant's interest.

Over the following days...

The first trade deals began.

Humanity purchased large quantities of rare minerals.

Then spiritual herbs.

Then heavenly stones.

Then ores used in the manufacture of weapons.

Then materials that could be used in the construction of ships.

But humanity did not limit itself to purchasing.

It also began selling some of its own products.

Refined metals.

Tools.

Certain weapons.

And other industrial products.

Humanity did not reveal its most advanced technologies.

Nor did it offer its true military weapons for sale.

Instead, it sold products that could be considered commercial goods.

Yet even those products...

Caught the merchants' attention.

Their quality was high.

Their craftsmanship was precise.

And their production was stable.

Some merchants began to wonder:

"How did the humans reach this level?"

But no one received an answer.

As time passed...

Trade began to expand.

Human ships reached new markets.

Then other cities.

Then more distant regions.

And merchants from different races began traveling toward Zeta.

They wanted to sell their resources.

And they also wanted to discover what humanity could offer.

At first...

Their numbers were small.

But they began to increase.

Some of the human trading ports became busier with each passing day.

For the first time in fifty years...

Zeta began receiving outsiders.

Merchants.

Explorers.

Craftsmen.

And representatives of various organizations.

Even so...

Security measures remained strict.

Outsiders were not permitted to move freely through military areas.

They were not allowed to approach army bases.

Nor were they permitted to enter the military shipyards.

Information concerning the army, the fleet, and advanced technology remained completely beyond their reach.

Trade was open.

But humanity's secrets...

Were not.

Within the Sovereign Palace...

The first comprehensive trade report reached Fafnir.

Eleanor stood before him.

She said:

"The results are better than we expected."

Fafnir raised his eyes.

"How many resources have we obtained?"

She informed him of the quantities.

Fafnir listened calmly.

Then asked:

"Has anyone noticed anything?"

She answered:

"The merchants have noticed that our production is high and that our products are of good quality."

"But they have seen nothing of our military facilities."

Fafnir nodded.

"Good."

Then he looked at the map.

There were now dozens of markers representing the newly established trade routes.

He said:

"Expand trade gradually."

"But do not reveal more than necessary."

Eleanor nodded.

"Understood."

Meanwhile...

Other rumors began spreading through the markets.

The humans were purchasing enormous quantities of resources.

The humans were selling high-quality products.

The humans were reopening ancient trade routes.

And most importantly...

The humans were not behaving like a weakened race struggling merely to survive.

They behaved like a race that knew exactly what it wanted.

Some merchants began looking at Zeta differently.

It was no longer merely an isolated land.

Nor was it simply humanity's last remaining homeland.

It was a new market.

A vast market.

And before long, various powers began realizing that dealing with humanity could be profitable.

But behind this trade...

Humanity was accomplishing something else.

Every ship that returned to Zeta carried new resources.

Every shipment of rare minerals entered the factories.

Every spiritual treasure reached humanity's storage facilities.

Every rare herb was placed into its warehouses.

And every new material opened another possibility for human industry.

Trade was not the goal in itself.

It was a means.

A means of gathering resources.

A means of expanding production.

A means of developing the army.

A means of developing the fleet.

And a means of preparing for the future.

At the same time...

No one outside Zeta knew the truth of what was happening behind the doors of its facilities.

They did not know how many factories there were.

They did not know the scale of production.

They did not know the size of the warehouses.

They did not know the size of the fleet.

And they did not know how powerful humanity had become.

They saw only the merchants.

They saw only the trade ships.

They saw only the products.

As for the true power...

It remained hidden.

One day...

A new trade convoy arrived at one of the human ports.

It consisted of ships belonging to several different races.

The merchants disembarked and looked around with curiosity.

The city before them was enormous.

Its streets were broad.

Its buildings were immense.

Vehicles moved constantly throughout the city.

And spiritual energy flowed through organized networks spanning the entire settlement.

But what astonished them most...

Was what they saw in the sky.

High above the city...

A group of ships passed overhead.

They were not trade ships.

They were larger.

Far more massive.

And surrounded by different auras of energy.

They moved in an organized formation.

Then disappeared beyond the horizon.

One of the merchants froze in place.

"What are those?"

No one answered him.

Outsiders were not permitted to know the details.

The military ships continued on their way.

As for the merchants...

They realized one thing.

What they had seen in the markets...

Was only a very small part of Zeta.

Elsewhere...

Fafnir stood before a window in the Sovereign Palace.

He looked down at the city.

Then toward the open sky.

Behind him, the trade reports continued to accumulate.

Resources were flowing in.

Trade routes were expanding.

And the outside world was gradually drawing closer to humanity.

But Fafnir was not interested in fame.

Nor was he interested in wealth.

He was looking farther ahead.

Toward humanity's future.

He said calmly:

"Gather everything that can be gathered."

Then he looked toward the sky.

"Power... requires resources."

Silence followed.

Outside the Sovereign Palace...

The trade ships continued moving.

And the first bonds between humanity and the other races of Gandalia began to take shape.

It was not war.

Nor was it an alliance.

It was merely trade.

But sometimes...

The greatest changes in history begin with the simplest things.

A first transaction.

Then a second.

Then a trade route.

Then a market.

Then an entire network of mutual interests.

And so...

Humanity began reclaiming its place in Gandalia.

Not by the sword.

But through trade.

And in the darkness...

Its true power continued to grow in silence.
