The Rebirth of Humanity

Chapter 75: The Crisis Before Birth

Chapter : The Crisis Before Birth

Griselda’s body lay limp in Fafnir’s arms, her head resting against his chest while her breathing was weak and irregular.

Fafnir did not feel the slightest weight from her body. What truly weighed upon his heart, however, was the strange sensation he could feel through her body; her vital energy was rapidly decreasing, as though something deep within her were devouring it without end.

Fafnir spoke in a low voice as he looked at her pale face:

“Gris... what is happening to you?”

She did not answer.

Her eyes were half-closed, and the features Fafnir was accustomed to seeing filled with strength and confidence now looked exhausted in a way he had never seen before.

Fafnir tightened his arms around her.

“Hold on a little longer, my dear. We’ll find out what’s happening.”

Then he quickly carried her and took her to their room.

He entered the room with hurried steps and headed directly toward the bed. He then placed Griselda upon it with extreme gentleness, as though he feared that the slightest additional pressure might harm her.

He leaned over her and watched her face.

Griselda opened her eyes slightly.

“Fafnir...”

“I’m here.”

She tried to raise her hand, but he immediately took it.

“Don’t move.”

She gave him a weak smile.

“I... feel that my body...”

She stopped for a moment, as though she no longer had the strength even to speak.

“I feel that my body is being drained of energy...”

Then her voice faded.

She closed her eyes and lost consciousness completely.

Fafnir froze.

For a moment, he could not comprehend what had happened.

Then he felt his heart tremble violently.

“My dear?”

She did not answer.

He moved closer to her.

“Griselda?”

He placed his hand against her cheek.

“My dear, are you all right? Wake up.”

She did not move.

The concern in his eyes intensified.

“Gris!”

He tried to wake her several times, calling her name and gently shaking her shoulder, then placed his hand against her forehead.

It was unnaturally hot.

“Wake up... please.”

But Griselda did not respond.

Those few moments were enough to make Fafnir, who had faced countless dangers and rarely knew fear, feel a helplessness he had never experienced before.

Then he quickly turned toward Sonora.

“You’re the doctor here.”

There was unmistakable concern in his voice.

“Examine her and find out why she lost consciousness, and why she said that her body was being drained.”

Sonora did not answer immediately.

She was staring intently at Griselda, and every trace of the teasing and sarcasm that had filled her expression only minutes ago had completely vanished.

She said calmly:

“Step aside for a moment, Fafnir.”

He looked at her for a moment, then moved aside.

Sonora stepped forward, climbed onto the bed, and knelt beside Griselda.

She spoke in a low voice:

“Gris... I’m going to examine you now.”

She did not expect an answer.

Nevertheless, as though speaking to her old friend, she continued:

“Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Sonora extended both hands.

She placed the palm of her right hand against Griselda’s forehead.

At the same moment, her brows furrowed.

The heat was intense.

“This isn’t normal...”

Then she placed her left palm below Griselda’s navel.

She closed her eyes for a moment.

Gradually, the palms of her hands began to glow with a brilliant green light.

The green light spread across her fingers and then extended up her arms before seeping into Griselda’s body in the form of fine threads of energy.

Fafnir stood beside the bed, watching every movement she made.

“Can you tell what’s happening?”

Sonora did not answer.

“Sonora.”

She raised one eyebrow without opening her eyes.

“Be quiet for a moment, you worrier. I need to concentrate.”

Fafnir immediately fell silent.

This was not the time for their usual arguments.

A few moments later, Sonora opened her eyes.

The green pupils of her eyes were glowing intensely.

She began moving her gaze over Griselda’s body, as though she could see directly into her and witness what was happening inside.

Her gaze moved from Griselda’s face to her chest, then to her abdomen and her limbs, while the green energy continued flowing from the palms of her hands.

One minute passed.

Then another.

Fafnir remained standing silently.

Yet he felt every passing second as heavy as an hour.

“Sonora...”

“I told you to be quiet.”

“But—”

She opened her eyes for a moment and looked at him.

“If you want me to find out what is happening to your wife, let me concentrate.”

Fafnir closed his mouth.

Then he muttered:

“All right.”

Sonora continued her examination.

After several minutes of careful examination, the expression on her face changed several times.

At first, she looked worried.

Then her eyes widened in shock.

Then the shock became even more pronounced.

And moments later, her face transformed into a mask of terror.

The green energy stopped for a moment.

Fafnir immediately noticed.

“What did you see?”

She did not answer.

Sonora was still staring at Griselda.

Then she slowly withdrew her hand and turned toward Fafnir.

His face was filled with deep concern.

She said:

“I know the cause of Gris’s condition.”

Fafnir answered quickly:

“What happened to her?”

Then his eyes narrowed.

“Could someone have done something to her?”

Simply thinking that someone might have caused Griselda’s condition was enough to completely change his expression.

The concern vanished from his face for a moment.

In its place came a cold and terrifying rage.

He said in a low voice:

“I swear, if anyone is trying to harm my wife, I will annihilate him, his family, and everyone he knows.”

Sonora froze for a moment.

It was not merely his words that shocked her, but the transformation that had overtaken Fafnir in an instant.

Moments ago, he had been a terrified husband worried about his wife.

Now he looked like a calamity on the verge of being unleashed.

Even the air in the room seemed heavier.

Sonora stared at him for several moments and, despite herself, felt a deep admiration.

He really is willing to destroy everything for her...

But that admiration did not last long.

The life of her dear friend Gris was at stake.

She said seriously:

“Gris’s condition was not caused by someone else... it is coming from within her.”

Fafnir furrowed his brows.

“From inside her body?”

He did not understand at first.

Then he looked at Griselda’s abdomen.

His eyes suddenly widened.

As though he had realized something that had been right in front of him all along, he shouted:

“Our son!”

Sonora nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked toward Griselda’s abdomen.

“The child in Gris’s womb is truly extraordinary.”

Fafnir moved closer to the bed.

“Our child...”

Then he raised his eyes toward Sonora.

“What’s happening to him?”

She answered:

“He is now on the verge of being born.”

A small smile appeared on Fafnir’s face without him realizing it.

Despite his fear, he felt immense happiness.

“On the verge of being born...”

He had waited for this moment for so long.

His child, who had continued growing inside Griselda throughout all these years, was finally close to seeing the world.

But Sonora continued:

“And that is precisely why the problem has begun.”

The smile disappeared from Fafnir’s face.

“What do you mean?”

“The child needs an enormous amount of energy for his growth to be completed and for him to be born.”

She looked at Griselda.

“Because of his extraordinary bloodline, his energy requirements have become enormous during this final stage.”

Then she said:

“He is drawing that energy from Griselda.”

Fafnir’s expression changed.

“From her energy?”

“Yes.”

Sonora answered:

“He is now absorbing Griselda’s energy at an alarming rate, and that is what caused her exhaustion.”

Fafnir looked at Griselda.

His fingers began to tremble slightly.

Then he turned his gaze back to Sonora.

“What will happen to her?”

Sonora fell silent.

“Sonora.”

She did not answer.

The words that were coming were heavy.

Fafnir was beginning to understand that something was terribly wrong.

“What will happen if this continues?”

Silence remained.

Fafnir stepped closer to her.

“Finish, Sonora.”

His voice was trembling now.

“What will happen to Griselda?”

Sonora gathered her courage.

Her face turned pale.

Then she said in a weak voice:

“If this continues... Gris’s body will be drained completely of energy... and she will die.”

Fafnir’s heart fell into an icy abyss.

“Die...?”

He could not comprehend the word.

He looked at Griselda.

At her peaceful face despite being unconscious.

At her hand, which had been holding his only moments ago.

Then he muttered rapidly:

“No...”

He clenched his fists.

“Griselda will not die.”

He shook his head.

“I will not allow it.”

Then he closed his eyes.

“Fafnir... think.”

He began breathing slowly.

“Think of a solution.”

He had only moments.

He could not fight.

He could not threaten anyone.

Nor could he use his power against something inside his wife’s body.

He had to find a solution.

Then, suddenly...

His eyes, which had dimmed only moments ago, lit up.

He raised his head.

“Can we inject external energy into Griselda’s body to compensate for the energy being drained from her?”

Hope lit up in Sonora’s eyes.

“Perhaps...”

She placed a hand against her chin and began to think.

“Perhaps that could work.”

Then she looked at him.

“But how will we do it?”

Fafnir answered without hesitation:

“I can inject my own energy into her body through intimate contact between us.”

The hope in Sonora’s eyes grew stronger.

But she quickly composed herself.

“Intimate contact?”

Fafnir looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Do you mean sex?”

“Yes.”

Sonora hesitated for a moment, then asked seriously:

“And are you certain this method will work?”

Fafnir answered quickly:

“Yes. I am certain this method works. I tried it last night, and it worked.”

Sonora remembered what had happened between Fafnir and Griselda the previous night.

Her cheeks almost flushed with embarrassment.

But thanks to her long experience, she quickly regained control of her emotions and then said:

“But how will you do it?”

She gestured toward Griselda.

“Griselda’s body cannot withstand any exertion right now, so you cannot have sex with her in her current condition.”

Fafnir froze.

Then he looked at Griselda.

Despair returned to his eyes.

“Then... I cannot use the method?”

Sonora shook her head.

“Not in her current condition.”

Fafnir lowered his head.

His mind began working at tremendous speed.

He had to find a way.

Any way.

But Griselda’s body could no longer endure anything.

Several moments of silence passed.

Then Sonora said quietly:

“I think I have a way to do it.”

Fafnir immediately raised his head.

Hope ignited in his eyes.

“What is it, Sonora?”

He stepped closer.

“Tell me quickly.”

Sonora hesitated intensely.

She knew exactly how great the decision she was about to make was.

She looked at Griselda.

Then at Fafnir.

Then back at her friend.

Gris...

She had known her for thousands of years.

They had fought together, argued, laughed, and shared secrets known to no one else.

And now her life was on the line.

Sonora clenched her teeth.

Finally, she said:

“Have sex with me, and when you are about to ejaculate, ejaculate into Gris’s womb.”

Fafnir was stunned by the idea.

“What?!”

Sonora did not back down, though her expression showed a hint of embarrassment.

“You heard me.”

Fafnir remained silent for several moments, turning the proposal over in his mind. Despite how strange the idea was, he began to realize that it really might be possible.

Then he hesitated for a moment before saying:

“Are you sure about this? Won’t you regret it?”

Sonora replied with firmness and determination:

“I am absolutely certain, and I will not regret it. My friend’s life is at stake.”

Fafnir was astonished by Sonora’s unexpected loyalty and devotion to Griselda.

He looked at Griselda lying on the bed, then at Sonora.

Finally, he said:

“All right... let’s do this for Griselda.”

Silence filled the room.

There was no longer any room for jokes.

Nor for the old feud between Fafnir and Sonora.

Nor even for concern about anything else.

There was only one thing left:

To save Griselda...

And protect their child, who was finally preparing to see the world.
