With Nubel getting excited on the back, the high spirit spread quickly among the main players, and they started to put up a harder fight for Higo and the others. Each game became longer than before, with the new opponent that kept coming becoming more fierce.
At this point, not a single one of them treated Higo and the others as just a bunch of rookies, but as an invincible opponent that they had to beat to prove that they deserved to be in this team.
Unfortunately, even with all of their efforts, they could barely even touch the nets that Higo protected today.
It wasn’t like Ozan Kabak showed a masterclass performance to block all the attacks. If anything, he finally started to show a weakness, getting killed so many times from his left side, where he had a history of injury on his left knee that slowed him down when he had to turn around in that direction.
Even though it was unfair to exploit such a weakness, everyone was blinded by the ambition to get through his defense that they didn’t care about anything right now. As long as it was legal and the referee, Waldoch, allowed it, they would use every little trick they had up their sleeves to get through Higo’s side.
The problem, though, was with the goalkeeper.
Somehow, Higo turned into a prime Gianluigi Buffon, always managing to block all the shots coming at his direction. His shot-stopping skill became a big highlight in this training session, as no matter what kind of attack he faced, he would always be so calm in front of the goal, using every single part of his body- hands, shoulders, legs, stomach, and sometimes even head to prevent a goal from happening.
However, the least noticeable and yet probably more important part of his game that people noticed was his game-reading skill.
At first, they just brushed it off as Higo being quick with his reaction. After all, any talented young goalkeeper would be like this, moving so quickly when they noticed a danger coming at them. It was a talent, yeah, but they were all professional players, so it was not the first time for them to see someone like this.
However, as time went by, they found out that it wasn’t as simple as Higo reacting to danger. No, he sometimes even moved before the danger was coming, like he could read their mind or even see the future a few seconds earlier.
Oh, how close they were to reality...
Well, not that they believed it, of course. No, even if Higo admitted that he could foresee the future a few seconds earlier, the others would’ve just thought that he was joking around. No, this was real life, and that kind of supernatural ability only belonged to fiction. So, in the end, they just thought that Higo was a beast in his game-reading ability, managing to always get into the best position one step faster than anyone else.
This put him in the spotlight in this training session, as so far, playing for almost an hour against around 10 teams, he had only conceded 4 goals.
Those four were also not the kind of pretty ones, being formed by one deflection goal, one own goal, and two rebound goals that Higo couldn’t get up fast enough to make the second save. Other than that, he protected everything cleanly, letting his team move forward without having to worry about the backline.
The result was also there. No matter how the coach composed a team to be their opponent, they swept everything so easily. The combination of Morita and Hofmann in the midfield line, coupled with Fabian, who was also so sharp from the flank, was enough to bag so many goals for them.
In the end, they swept everyone mercilessly before the coach had to stop the training session abruptly, not wanting to damage the team’s confidence further.
"So, now that you have seen their ability, you are convinced, right?" The head coach asked. "I don’t know what got into Wagner’s head to not even take advantage of three young and talented players, but I will not be the same as him. They will be an important part of my team, so whoever has the problem here can complain to me straight away."
Well, not that anyone would dare to do that. Not only was it because they were truly convinced by the rookies, but they also knew that Frohling was the one in charge right now. Conflicting with the man straight away after he became the head coach would only be suicide for their career.
Still, if there was one thing they couldn’t understand right now, it would be about the goalkeeper’s situation. After all, Nubel’s transfer was not official yet, and hell, not a lot of people knew about this news even inside the team. In their mind, the man was still the best goalkeeper to protect the backline, but they also couldn’t deny that Higo showed a far better performance than Nubel today.
Hell, even Nubel himself had a complicated feeling right now. On one hand, he acknowledged Higo’s performance, but he also didn’t want to lose his position as the main goalkeeper here. No, that would make Bayern, who had been eyeing him for a long time, feel suspicious, wondering if his performance was declining or something like that.
It would be bad if the transfer failed to happen just because he spent the next three months on the bench.
Just like him, Higo was also in a complicated mood right now. Even if he played well in this session, the boy knew that he wouldn’t be able to play in the real game immediately. No, the coach had already promised that he had to wait until the winter transfer first before his chance was coming. The team wanted to maximize the profit that they could get from Nubel’s transfer, so it was important to let the man showcase their talent before the transfer happened.
Frohling had already apologized to him about that, but Higo was still unwilling when he thought about it.
’Damn! This is so unfair for me!’
