"Hey, Wakabayashi!" Ayaka couldn’t help but greet her little brother playfully when she saw him finally coming out of the stadium. "Having a good time with Tsubasa Ozora or what?" She giggled secretly at her own question.
In return, Higo just rolled his eyes exasperatedly. "Haha, real funny, Aya-nee." His tone was full of sarcasm.
It was after everything was over, and even though the stadium was still full of people talking excitedly about this win, not a single one of them bothered Higo’s family. Well, after all, they were quite low-key during their stay here, so no one really knew that those were the family of their new hero in this town.
Higo himself let out a relieved sigh the moment he saw them waiting outside. Even though he exchanged jabs instantly with his sister, inwardly, the boy felt like the depleted energy from the game earlier started to come back slowly as he was surrounded by his beloved family.
"Oh, hush, you both! We are on the street, don’t act like children!" Minami slapped the two siblings on their backs, getting their attention immediately.
When Higo turned around, he could see his mother looking at him with a gentle gaze, enough to put him in an uncomfortable situation. "What? There is nothing on my face, right?" He rubbed his face jokingly, wanting to ease the tension here.
"Oph!"
What Higo didn’t expect was that his mother would jump at him and give him a bear hug, as if she wanted to inject all the warmth inside her to lighten his cold body after being in this gloomy city for more than half a year alone.
"My baby boy! I am so proud of you!" Minami started to sob dramatically, searching Higo’s face before looking him straight in the eyes. The boy was so uncomfortable right now, not knowing how to handle his crying mother. "You should be suffering a lot here, right? It must be difficult, having to live alone in this cold-blooded country! You are so strong, and I couldn’t be prouder than you!"
Higo couldn’t help but sigh helplessly, secretly asking for help from his sister and Kumiko. They both giggled secretly, but fortunately, his mother’s dramatic moment was over so quickly, just within a blink.
"Anyway, you must be hungry, right? Come on, let’s go to a Japanese restaurant nearby! I found a good one in the recommendation system earlier!" The mother dragged the other three kids to follow her, not even asking about their opinion. Not that they were about to complain, of course, as they all recognized that her words were law here.
After this, Higo just followed the flow, letting himself get dragged around by the three women. The boy also took his time waving back at whoever greeted him, as he was a big shot today, having led Schalke into their first win of the year. However, after getting tired of doing the same thing over and over again, Kumiko finally forced him to wear sunglasses and a cap.
"At least you will be less recognizable. It is good that you are willing to greet them, but you still need your own privacy." That was what the girl said, and Higo couldn’t agree more with that.
After this, Higo started to lose concentration, what with him being so exhausted after such a long day. He didn’t know how, but the next thing Higo knew was that he was already back at his own flat, lying on his bed while also wearing his pajamas.
’Wait... What? Is that game against Hoffenheim also just a dream?!’ The moment his consciousness was back, Higo couldn’t help but feel panicked. After all, it would be a disaster if he had to repeat the process yesterday once again.
Fortunately, it was just his imagination, as the moment the boy opened his phone, he found so many messages from his mother.
Mom: You looked so tired when we brought you back in a taxi, so you probably won’t notice it.
Mom: A note for the future. Always have someone around to accompany you after the game, because you start acting like a drunkard, and it is dangerous.
Mom: I brought Kumiko-chan and Aya-chan back to the hotel, so call me when you wake up.
’So, I just fell asleep when getting my ass dragged around?’ Higo could feel the corner of his lips twitching speechlessly. ’No wonder I don’t remember how I got here. Mom should be the one who forced me to change into my pajamas, right?’
The boy took a deep breath for a moment, trying to regain his composure. Now that he knew everything was real, he didn’t need to panic anymore. The first thing the boy did here was to check the current time, wanting to make sure how long he had been asleep yesterday.
’Still 04:30... Even the stars are still shining brightly outside. Damn, it seems I woke up too early.’ He grumbled lightly.
However, before he could do anything else, Higo noticed something on his phone. His notifications exploded, showing 99+ news items all over the platforms. From his messengers to his social media accounts, almost every single application on his phone froze here, enough to make the boy dumbfounded.
’This should be because of the game, right? But... Still, how could the reaction be this exaggerated?’ He started to question everything right now.
The moment his phone finally managed to recover, though, the dumbfounded feeling grew bigger as Higo noticed that all the news, either the German one or from the platform back home, was reporting his debut yesterday.
A New Superstar or Just a Flash in the Pan?
A Perfect Debut! The Iron Wall from Hakodate Leads Schalke 04 to a Win Against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim!
Ryusuke Higo: We will get better!
Higo blinked for a moment, staring at his phone with a blank expression. Somehow, every single word coming out of his mouth became news today, and he didn’t even know what to think about it.
In the end, the boy decided to do what any responsible teenager like him would do here: Call his mother and ask for advice.
