The Rogue Villager Chen Erbao

Chapter 21: I'm Calling Off the Wedding

It was true that due to the way the village had developed, most of its residents were not highly educated.

But that didn't mean they were stupid.

A high level of education doesn't necessarily mean one is worldly. Besides, what does "worldly" even mean?

Being worldly could mean seeing forests of skyscrapers, clinking glasses at lavish banquets, and closing multi-million-dollar deals with a smile. But it could also mean watching waves of wheat roll and tree shadows dance, wandering through mountains and rivers, and knowing how to coax the harvest of several acres from a single plot of land.

The villagers might not have experienced the world of the city folk, but by the same token, the city folk had likely never experienced the world of the villagers.

Watching Liu Xiufen and Chen Qing put on their little act, the people who had gathered instantly understood what was going on, and their faces filled with anger.

"What a piece of work, using this as an excuse to take advantage of them!"

"This is just pure, shameless greed."

"Aren't they just a family of animals!"

The crowd murmured amongst themselves, but Chen Qing's hands didn't stop in the slightest.

His hand was reaching straight for Fang Yun's chest.

Fang Yun's face went pale with shock. "You disgusting pervert, let go of me!"

Fang Yun struggled, but she was no match for Chen Qing's grip. Seeing this, Chen Erbao couldn't hold back any longer.

'It was one thing for that bastard to run wild on a normal day, but he was still acting so shameless in front of all these people, and now he was even putting his filthy paws on my sister-in-law.'

'Originally, Chen Erbao had planned to hold back for the sake of his relationship with Chen Jiaqi, but now it seemed there was no need for that at all.'

Without a second thought, Chen Erbao launched a flying kick.

"Get the hell out of my sight!"

BAM!

The sole of Chen Erbao's size-43 shoe planted itself squarely on Chen Qing's long face. It was a kick fueled by pure rage, and Chen Qing was powerless to resist. He spat out two front teeth as he went flying backward.

THUMP!

He landed hard on the ground, his face already swelling up badly.

Liu Xiufen, who had been shouting belligerently from the sidelines, stared wide-eyed. With a cry of "Oh my god!" she rushed to Chen Qing's side. "Son, are you okay?"

With the new gaps in his teeth, every breath Chen Qing took whistled. He couldn't even form a word.

Liu Xiufen's temper flared. She immediately plopped herself down on the ground and began to curse up a storm.

"Everyone, come and look! What kind of animals are these people?"

"It was bad enough he hit my boy before, but now he dares to do it again in front of everyone! Who knows what kind of monstrous things he does in private!"

"This is too much! It's simply outrageous!"

"Is there no law anymore? No justice?"

The onlookers were stunned. Their impression of Chen Erbao had always been that of a pushover, the kind of guy who wouldn't curse back when scolded or fight back when hit. For him to act like this, it was as if the sun had risen in the west.

Then again, it only went to show just how far Liu Xiufen and her family had pushed him.

No one said a word, which only made Liu Xiufen curse more viciously. "A bastard born with a mother but without any manners!"

"A little bastard who doesn't understand reason at all!"

Chen Erbao went numb with rage when he heard that.

'It was bad enough this bitch had the gall to come and make trouble, but how dare she bring up his deceased parents?'

"Since you're all here to make trouble, then don't blame me for what happens next!"

"If I don't beat you so bad your own mothers won't recognize you, then I'll call it a loss!"

Chen Erbao raised his fists and was about to charge, but Fang Yun moved first and blocked his path.

"What are you doing?!"

"Do you want to be a bachelor for the rest of your life?!"

"Or are you trying to give me a heart attack?!"

Fang Yun shot Chen Erbao a vicious glare.

It had to be said, when she was being alluring, even a venerable monk with decades of cultivation would be tempted. But when she was serious, even a hellion like Chen Erbao had to beat a hasty retreat.

Chen Erbao immediately took half a step back.

"Sister-in-law, I..."

"Shut your mouth!"

Fang Yun hurried over to Liu Xiufen. "Aunt Xiufen, please get up first."

"Let's not make things too ugly. And let's not say things we can't take back."

"Worst comes to worst, we'll figure out a way to get the 880,000 for the bride price."

Fang Yun's concession didn't placate Liu Xiufen in the slightest. On the contrary, feeling like she now had them right where she wanted them, she raised her voice. "Fang Yun!"

"You're really invested in Chen Erbao's affairs, aren't you? More concerned than his own sister-in-law would be."

"Don't tell me you two are having an affair."

Fang Yun's face immediately flushed with anger.

Before she could speak, Liu Xiufen continued, "Fine, you want Chen Erbao to marry our Jiaqi, that's possible."

"But let me tell you, that 880,000 is a non-negotiable price."

"And now, you need to come up with another 600,000."

"What?"

Fang Yun couldn't believe her ears.

The surrounding crowd also wondered if they had heard her correctly.

'What kind of daughter is this?'

'A bride price of over 1.4 million? Is she gold-plated down there or something? Even that wouldn't cost this much!'

'This isn't marrying off a daughter, this is selling her!'

Just as Fang Yun was about to try and reason with her, Chen Erbao completely lost his composure. He stepped in front of Fang Yun. "Sister-in-law, stop wasting your breath on them."

"Can't you see what's happening?"

"They're just trying to walk all over us."

"This wedding? It's better to just call it off."

Fang Yun's eyes went wide.

Liu Xiufen was also stunned.

'Never mind the fact that nothing was set in stone with Wang Dazhu yet—even if it were, she wasn't particularly thrilled with that arrangement to begin with.'

'Just think about it: Chen Erbao was tall and handsome, and his clinic business was improving every day. While his family's wealth couldn't compare to Wang Dazhu's, there was absolutely nothing wrong with him as a person.'

'But Wang Dazhu, on the other hand... never mind that he was one-eyed, he was also an incredible womanizer who kept seven or eight mistresses. He himself weighed over two hundred pounds. Setting everything else aside, if Chen Jiaqi really married him, their life in the bedroom would hardly be harmonious.'

'Forget the extra 600,000; even if Chen Erbao could only produce the original 880,000, he was still the top choice.'

'Besides, Chen Jiaqi and Chen Erbao had been together for so many years; they definitely had feelings for each other.'

'Liu Xiufen knew what her son was like, and she knew exactly why he'd been beaten. She hadn't brought him here today because he'd been hit; she had come to squeeze Chen Erbao's family for even more money.'

'But she never expected her plan to backfire so spectacularly. She'd tried to steal the chicken but ended up losing the rice. Who would have thought Chen Erbao would say something like that?'

'If the wedding was really called off over this, her family would lose all face.'

'Besides, even if they were to break up, Chen Jiaqi should be the one dumping Chen Erbao, not the other way around!'

'What was this supposed to be?'

Liu Xiufen's eyes darted around, then she fixed her gaze on Chen Erbao and went back into her shrewish-fishwife routine.

"Chen Erbao, you spineless bastard, what did you just say?!"

"You want to be a bachelor for the rest of your life?!"

Fang Yun also turned to look at Chen Erbao. He just sneered. "Being a bachelor my whole life would be better than being manipulated by your family, wouldn't it?"

"Do you really think I can't live without Chen Jiaqi?"

"Listen up."

"This wedding? I'm calling it off!"

"Your Chen Jiaqi is too precious for me. I can't afford her."
