The Rogue Villager Chen Erbao

Chen Erbao was adamant, and they realized it was pointless to press him further, so they changed the subject.

"Alright. We'll report all of this and create a file for you, Mr. Chen… But there's another reason we came here today."

He asked curiously, "Go on."

"On behalf of the Security Bureau, I'd like to invite you, Mr. Chen, to join us and contribute to the stability of China."

'They want to recruit me?'

Chen Erbao was momentarily taken aback. After a moment of careful thought, he shook his head. "I'm sorry, but I don't plan on joining any organizations."

He had too many secrets that couldn't see the light of day, and his company kept him busy. He couldn't possibly join the Court and needlessly shackle himself.

Hua Yueqing wasn't surprised by his answer. She didn't press the issue, simply nodding. "We understand your position, Mr. Chen. In fact, almost none of the Independent Cultivators of Ancient Martial Arts who have emerged in the Mortal Realm over the years have been willing to join us. But…"

"But what?"

Chen Erbao asked.

"But in the end, things didn't turn out well for them."

A cold smile played on Hua Yueqing's full, red lips as she looked at Chen Erbao and spoke with grave seriousness.

Chen Fang and Lu Shan did the same, their gazes locking onto Chen Erbao.

Chen Erbao's expression was blank, his eyes like a stagnant pool, utterly without a ripple. "And what if others provoke me?"

"The law exists for a reason. Leave any injustices to the law."

"And what if the law fails to deliver timely justice?"

Hearing Chen Erbao's question, Hua Yueqing was momentarily at a loss for words.

"Since you've investigated me, you must know what happened at Changbai Mountain. Fang Han of the Fang Family has committed countless evils, bullying and oppressing people for years. How is it that the law never punished him? If I weren't an Ancient Martial Artist, I'd probably be dead at his hands by now. Why aren't you going after him? What's the point of coming to me with all this talk?"

Chen Erbao stared at Hua Yueqing and asked calmly.

Chen Erbao's words left the three from the Security Bureau stunned. Lu Shan's brow furrowed. "That's not our concern. Regardless of the circumstances, no one is allowed to disrupt the order. Without order, the world descends into chaos!"

Chen Erbao nodded. "You're right. We certainly can't have a world without order. But… no matter how strict that order is, there will always be cracks it can't reach. If I happen to come across one, then *I* become the embodiment of order. So don't blame me if I don't show the Security Bureau any deference then!"

Hua Yueqing and the others shot to their feet. Lu Shan's expression darkened. "So you're dead set on fighting against order?"

Chen Erbao was unfazed. "It's your job to maintain order, but there are always going to be gaps. When I take action, I'm helping you fill them. You should be thanking me!"

"Are you trying to become an outlaw?"

Lu Shan was extremely rigid, seeing the world in black and white. In his eyes, Chen Erbao's vigilante-like ideas made him a destabilizing element in society.

'A person like that needs to be sanctioned!'

Chen Erbao snorted. "You enforce your laws, and I won't go around killing innocent people. The day you find evidence that I've slaughtered the innocent, feel free to come and arrest me!"

"Big talk! Who do you think you are? Justice incarnate?"

Lu Shan glared at him, ready to pounce at any moment.

Hua Yueqing frowned. "Enough arguing… Mr. Chen, you're right. Sometimes, justice and order are delayed. Chen Erbao glanced at the card, pocketed it, and nodded.

Chen Erbao stood up, his expression calm. "Are we done here? If so, I'm leaving. The Xie Family still owes me a billion."

Lu Shan snorted. "You killed a hundred ordinary people on the steppe. We haven't even settled that score with you yet!"

"They made the first move."

"That's still a matter for law enforcement to handle!"

The floorboards beneath Chen Erbao's feet suddenly shattered. As if teleporting, he appeared behind Lu Shan, his longsword a blur of blinding white light as it sliced toward Lu Shan's neck.

Hua Yueqing had appeared at Lu Shan's side at some unknown moment. Her delicate finger tapped the edge of Chen Erbao's blade, but her expression changed in the next instant. A surge of Inner Strength enveloped her finger as her other hand yanked Lu Shan backward.

Lu Shan reacted as well, his Inner Strength flaring as he kicked out at Chen Erbao.

Chen Erbao didn't hesitate to meet it with a punch!

A dull thud echoed as all three staggered back a few steps.

Chen Erbao stared at them coldly, his longsword pulsing with a spiritual light and emitting a soul-chilling glint.

Lu Shan, however, looked as if he'd just cheated death, touching his neck while drenched in a cold sweat.

The spot on his leg where Chen Erbao had struck him throbbed with a dull ache, filling him with even greater horror.

Hua Yueqing looked down at the smear of blood on her pristine finger, utterly shocked.

'She had underestimated Chen Erbao's strength!'

"People were literally trying to kill me, and you're telling me to leave it to you? One hundred guns! Why aren't you investigating where they came from? You want order? Aren't those hundred guns a far greater threat to ordinary people than I am?!"

Lu Shan was momentarily silenced.

He, too, was stunned by Chen Erbao's power.

Chen Fang had been startled as well. His reaction was only a fraction slower than Hua Yueqing's; he had subconsciously moved to block the door, preparing to ambush Chen Erbao from behind.

Seeing that it was just a brief clash, he immediately stepped in to mediate, laughing. "Everyone, let's just talk this out… Weren't all those desperadoes evil to the core? They got what they deserved… As for the Xie Family, they were indeed the ones in the wrong first, so it's fine for Mr. Chen to handle them. But from now on, if any other blind bastards try to provoke you, Mr. Chen, you can just tell us. We'll take care of it. That should help avoid some unnecessary conflict!"

Chen Erbao shot him a glance, then walked out the door, sword in hand.
