"Er Bao's here!"
"Er Bao, have you eaten yet?"
"Er Bao, I used to hold you when you were little. In the blink of an eye, you're all grown up. Time really flies…"
"…"
Seeing Chen Erbao arrive, the square immediately livened up. Chen Erbao smiled and greeted everyone one by one, then made his way to the front. Looking at Zhao Ruoying, he said with a laugh:
"Thanks for helping mobilize everyone, Village Chief Zhao. You've saved me a lot of trouble!"
Because there were other people around, Zhao Ruoying kept her expression neutral.
"I'll always help with things that are beneficial to the village's development… I heard Liu Xian's people came looking for you?"
She had only just heard that a group of people in luxury cars had gone to Chen Erbao's house this morning.
She guessed right away that they were Liu Xian's men.
Chen Erbao nodded.
"The Inspector General's son. He's already left."
"Yan Ye? How did he get mixed up in this… Oh, right. His old man is part of the Liu Family's faction."
Zhao Ruoying muttered to herself.
"Don't worry. Medicine King Hall will handle the pressure from above. I just need to take care of things here on Bailong Mountain."
"Okay, then let's get ready. We'll head into the mountain at ten."
"Alright… You're coming too?"
Only then did Chen Erbao notice that Zhao Ruoying was wearing loose-fitting casual clothes with a hiking bag on her back.
Zhao Ruoying shot him a glance.
"I've participated in quite a few mountain climbing competitions and have gone on survival expeditions in primeval forests. Did you think I was some delicate little missy?"
Chen Erbao then remembered that this woman had a fiery temper, knew Taekwondo, and was quite skilled in a fight.
He gave an embarrassed laugh.
"Yes, yes, you're the capable one. I was blind to not recognize your greatness!"
Zhao Ruoying seemed to still be angry about what happened the other day. She couldn't be bothered with him and turned away to check her equipment.
Chen Erbao went home, grabbed the rations and water bottle Fang Yun had prepared, and checked the time. Seeing it was already ten o'clock, he took Chen Dabao and headed to the village entrance.
Once everyone had gathered, they began their trek into Bailong Mountain.
Bailong Mountain stood at an altitude of over three thousand meters, a rare high mountain in the hundred-mile radius. Its peak was shrouded in mist year-round, the forests were deep and the paths treacherous, and wild beasts roamed freely. Even the villagers of Bailong Village only hunted at the foot of the mountain and generally avoided venturing deep into its interior.
Accompanying them were five exploration experts invited by Zhao Ruoying, who were responsible for surveying the terrain and finding a suitable route.
The group hacked their way through thorns and brambles, and by noon, they had only made it halfway up the mountain.
"Let's have everyone rest for a bit. We'll eat some rations. There's a wolf den nearby; let's go check it out."
Chen Erbao suggested.
Zhao Ruoying had everyone rest where they were, then asked curiously:
"How do you know there's a wolf den nearby?"
"The people of Bailong Village have lived here for countless generations. Our ancestors figured out long ago which ferocious beasts roam these mountains. It's knowledge that's been passed down from one generation to the next."
To this day, there are still villagers in Bailong Village who make a living by hunting. They are all veteran hunters, though their numbers are much smaller now compared to the last century.
After lunch, one of the hunters led the way. The group soon arrived at a cave, and even before they got close, they could smell a foul, bloody stench.
"Heads up! Be careful of your surroundings."
An experienced hunter called out a warning.
The villagers from Bailong Village were no strangers to this sort of thing. One by one, they chambered rounds in their rifles and kept their machetes at the ready.
SWOOSH!
The wolves had already heard the villagers' footsteps. They shot out of the cave, scattering in all directions.
A few of the bolder ones, however, charged toward the group, ready to bite.
BANG—
A dense volley of gunfire erupted, and wolves fell to the ground, dead. During the lull as everyone reloaded, Chen Erbao, bold because of his supreme skill, charged forward with his machete.
"Leave it to me!"
He roared, leaping more than five meters in a single bound. He swung his long blade in a wide arc, directly dismembering a wolf that pounced at him.
Seeing him charge in, the others didn't dare to fire randomly. They remained on guard while three to five burly men drew their own blades and rushed forward to help.
The physical prowess of the Qi Refining Third Layer was no joke. Chen Erbao felt he could crush Bolt in a sprint and probably take down Tyson in a boxing match.
What was even more ridiculous was his terrifying stamina.
After several rounds of charging and slaughtering, he didn't feel tired at all. Instead, his fighting spirit only soared higher.
Twenty minutes later, Chen Erbao sheathed his machete. Looking at the wolf carcasses littering the ground, he let out a light breath.
"Here, drink some water."
Zhao Ruoying had walked over at some point, holding out her own water bottle.
Without a second thought, Chen Erbao put it to his lips and began chugging it down. GLUG, GLUG, GLUG.
Seeing this, Zhao Ruoying's face flushed red. She glanced around, and seeing that no one was paying attention, she finally scolded him:
"I told you to drink, not to drink directly from it!"
Chen Erbao shrugged helplessly.
"You didn't say…"
Zhao Ruoying didn't say any more. She took the water bottle back and turned to leave.
Chen Erbao watched her graceful figure retreat and scratched his head in confusion.
'This woman is acting a little strange,' he thought.
Zhao Ruoying walked to the side with her head down. Seeing that the exploration experts were still drawing up maps and making calculations, she sat on a large rock and spaced out.
Her mind was filled with images of Chen Erbao.
There was the image of him pinning her to the ground and bullying her, the image of him sparring with her, and the image of his heroic figure charging through the wolf pack just now…
'Actually… he's quite handsome, has a great body, and he's capable… He's just too much of a womanizer!'
She shook her head, trying hard to banish the messy thoughts.
The exploration experts had finished mapping the route, so they could continue moving forward.
Their main purpose for entering the mountain this time was to drive the wild beasts out of Bailong Mountain.
Zhao Ruoying asked one of the veteran hunters:
"What other beasts are holed up nearby?"
"There are a few leopards, right around the halfway point. They're vicious…"
The group set off again, heading toward the leopard den halfway up the mountain.
"Chen Erbao, where are you planning to put your medicinal herb plantation? You can't just plant herbs over the entire mountain, can you?"
Zhao Ruoying ran to the front of the group to ask.
Chen Erbao had already given it some thought.
The terrain halfway up Bailong Mountain was relatively flat and open, and there was another flat area at the summit. The other areas were too steep and not suitable for planting.
So the choice was between those two locations.
To facilitate the initial stages of development, Chen Erbao naturally chose the area halfway up the mountain.
After hearing Chen Erbao's plan, Zhao Ruoying nodded. She was now completely convinced that this wasn't just a whim of his, but something he had prepared for and planned out.
Around three in the afternoon, the group finally reached the leopard den halfway up the mountain. With a volley from more than a dozen guns, one large and one small leopard were swiftly silenced, their breathing ceasing completely.
The exploration experts recorded the topography and route, already forming a plan for building a road. They indicated that they could now head back down the mountain.
And so, the group started to head back the way they came.
Going up the mountain had taken a long time because they had to determine the direction and clear the path, but the descent was much faster.
In just half an hour, they had already covered half the distance.
The mountain became progressively steeper, surrounded by precipitous cliffs and bottomless valleys.
Zhao Ruoying was walking in the middle of the group when a sudden numbness shot through her calf. She looked down to see a long, red-and-black striped snake latched onto her leg.
"AH!"
Zhao Ruoying let out a subconscious scream and kicked her leg, flinging the snake away. But she lost her balance and began to slide down the steep slope.
Not far below was a cliff, plunging into a bottomless abyss.
By the time the people around her reacted, she was already sliding over the slippery moss toward the edge of the cliff.
