The morning began quietly at the Aster household.
For once, there were no hammers striking outside.
No shouting from the training yard.
No students rushing toward the school.
No Tomas arguing with Edran.
No Ordan complaining about Celine teleporting into places she wasn't supposed to be.
There was only the soft sound of birds outside the window and the faint rustling of leaves in the early morning breeze.
Celine woke slowly.
She blinked.
For several seconds, everything seemed normal.
Then her stomach turned.
She sat upright.
"Oh."
Another wave of nausea rolled through her.
Celine immediately threw the blankets aside and hurried from the room.
She barely made it to the wash basin before she became sick.
When it finally passed, she remained there, breathing heavily.
She wiped her mouth and stared at her reflection.
Something was different.
She knew it.
Her body had been behaving strangely for several days.
She had been more tired than usual.
Certain foods had suddenly become unappealing.
She had been unusually sensitive to smells.
She had dismissed all of it as exhaustion from her training.
But now...
Celine slowly placed a hand over her stomach.
Her heart began pounding.
"No."
The thought came immediately.
Then another.
"Could it be?"
She stood there for several moments.
She didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or panic.
Finally, a smile began spreading across her face.
She knew exactly who she needed to tell.
Catherine.
Catherine was sitting near the window when Celine burst into the room.
"Catherine."
Catherine turned her head.
"Good morning."
"Catherine."
Something in Celine's voice made her smile.
"What happened?"
"I..."
Celine stopped.
She suddenly wasn't sure how to say it.
Catherine tilted her head.
"You look terrified."
"I'm not terrified."
"You are."
"I'm excited."
"You're definitely terrified."
Celine took a breath.
"I think I'm pregnant."
Silence.
Catherine's expression softened.
Then she smiled.
Not surprised.
Not shocked.
Just... pleased.
Celine stared at her.
"Why are you smiling like that?"
Catherine's smile became slightly coy.
"Because I already know."
Celine froze.
"What?"
"I already know."
"How?"
Catherine shrugged.
"I've been feeling something."
Celine stared.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I wanted to be sure."
Celine's eyes widened.
"How sure?"
Catherine smiled.
"Pretty sure."
Celine sat down beside her.
"How?"
Catherine reached out and gently took her sister's hand.
"Your heartbeat."
Celine stared.
Catherine continued.
"It changed."
"When?"
"A few days ago."
Celine laughed incredulously.
"You're telling me you've known for days?"
"I've suspected."
"That's different."
"Not really."
Celine shook her head.
"You are impossible."
Catherine laughed.
Then her expression softened.
"Are you happy?"
Celine looked down at her hands.
A smile appeared.
"Yes."
She looked back at Catherine.
"I'm really happy."
Catherine hugged her.
"I'm happy too."
They remained together for several moments.
Then Celine suddenly pulled away.
"We have to tell Mom."
Catherine laughed.
"And Leo."
"And Dad."
"And probably everyone else."
Catherine smiled.
"Eventually."
Celine stood.
"Now."
They found Leo outside.
He was helping several builders unload supplies for one of the new houses.
Celine hurried toward him.
"Leo."
He turned.
"Morning."
Celine stopped in front of him.
She suddenly became nervous again.
Leo noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
Catherine stood behind her, smiling.
Celine took a breath.
"I'm pregnant."
Leo stared at her.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Celine's nervousness increased.
"Leo?"
He blinked.
"You're..."
He stopped.
Celine nodded.
"Yes."
Leo's face changed completely.
The surprise became disbelief.
Then joy.
Then something deeper.
He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her.
Celine laughed as he lifted her slightly off the ground.
"Leo!"
"I'm sorry."
He set her down.
"I just..."
He laughed.
"I'm going to be a father."
Catherine smiled.
"Yes."
Leo looked between them.
"We're going to have a baby."
Celine nodded.
"Our first."
Leo hugged her again.
Catherine joined them.
For a moment, the three simply stood together.
Then Leo pulled away.
"We have to tell your parents."
Celine laughed.
"They're going to lose their minds."
Elara was in the kitchen.
She was preparing breakfast when the three entered.
She immediately noticed their expressions.
"What happened?"
Celine smiled.
"Mom."
Elara stopped.
"What?"
Celine took her mother's hands.
"I'm pregnant."
Elara froze.
The room became silent.
Then Elara's eyes filled with tears.
"Really?"
Celine nodded.
Elara immediately pulled her daughter into a hug.
"Oh, my baby."
Celine laughed through her own tears.
"I'm going to have a baby."
Elara held her tightly.
"I'm going to be a grandmother."
Catherine laughed.
"She finally got what she wanted."
Elara pulled away.
"Don't you dare make fun of me."
"You've been waiting for this."
"Of course I have!"
Elara looked at Leo.
"You!"
Leo smiled.
"Yes?"
"You'd better take care of her."
"I will."
Elara hugged him too.
Then she hugged Catherine.
"And you."
Catherine laughed.
"Why am I getting hugged?"
"Because you're an aunt now."
Catherine smiled.
"Technically."
Elara shook her head.
"No."
She placed a hand against Catherine's cheek.
"You are family."
Catherine smiled.
"I know."
The door opened.
Marcus stepped inside.
"I smelled breakfast."
Nobody answered.
Marcus stopped.
He looked around.
Elara was crying.
Celine was smiling.
Catherine was laughing.
Leo looked like he had just been handed the greatest treasure in the world.
Marcus frowned.
"What happened?"
Elara turned toward him.
"Marcus."
"What?"
"You're going to be a grandfather."
Marcus froze.
Celine laughed.
Her father stared at her.
Then at Leo.
Then back at Celine.
"Really?"
Celine nodded.
Marcus's eyes became wet.
He walked toward his daughter.
"Come here."
Celine embraced him.
Marcus held her tightly.
For years, he had watched his daughter struggle.
He had watched her lose the ability to walk.
He had watched her learn to walk again.
He had watched her become a powerful spatial mage.
Now he was watching her become a mother.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I'm proud of you."
Celine smiled against his shoulder.
"I love you, Dad."
"I love you too."
Marcus pulled away.
Then looked at Leo.
"You're going to be a father."
Leo nodded.
"I am."
Marcus smiled.
"Congratulations."
They shook hands.
Then Marcus pulled him into a hug.
"Welcome to the family."
Leo laughed.
"I thought I already was."
"You are."
Marcus grinned.
"Now you're really stuck."
The news spread almost immediately.
Nobody could explain exactly how.
Celine hadn't announced it.
Leo hadn't.
Marcus hadn't.
Elara definitely hadn't.
But within an hour, Tomas appeared at the house.
He knocked once.
Then walked inside.
"Congratulations!"
Everyone stared at him.
Celine narrowed her eyes.
"How did you know?"
Tomas smiled.
"News travels."
"Who told you?"
"I have sources."
Edran appeared behind him.
"I told him."
Tomas pointed at him.
"He told me."
Celine sighed.
"Of course."
Tomas walked over.
"So."
He looked at Celine.
"You're pregnant."
Celine smiled.
"Yes."
Tomas nodded solemnly.
"Excellent."
Leo raised an eyebrow.
"Excellent?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Tomas smiled.
"More Asters."
Edran nodded.
"That is generally how families work."
Tomas turned toward him.
"Don't ruin the moment."
The school heard next.
The students began whispering.
Then cheering erupted across the courtyard.
Teachers smiled.
Children began asking questions.
Someone apparently shouted:
"The patriarch is going to be a father!"
Within minutes, the entire compound knew.
People came to congratulate Celine.
Farmers brought fresh fruit.
Healers brought advice.
Neighbors brought gifts.
Someone gave Leo a tiny wooden practice sword.
Leo stared at it.
"This is for a baby."
The blacksmith shrugged.
"Start early."
Catherine laughed.
Elara immediately began discussing baby blankets.
Marcus started thinking about expanding the house.
Leo realized that becoming a father apparently meant losing all control over his own home.
He didn't care.
Not even slightly.
By evening, the town knew.
The mayor himself came to congratulate them.
Edmund Hawthorne arrived with his family.
His grandchildren had already heard the news and were excited.
Edmund shook Leo's hand.
"This is wonderful."
"Thank you."
"Your first child?"
Leo nodded.
Edmund smiled.
"Then you have my congratulations."
His wife embraced Celine.
Soon, the entire gathering became a celebration.
Food was brought out.
Music began.
Children ran through the compound.
The adults talked.
The elders laughed.
Celine sat beneath the great oak with Catherine beside her.
Leo sat on the other side.
Elara kept looking at her daughter.
Every few minutes, she smiled again.
Celine finally laughed.
"Mom."
"What?"
"You keep staring."
"I know."
"Why?"
"I'm happy."
Celine smiled.
"I know."
Elara placed a hand gently against her daughter's stomach.
"It still doesn't feel real."
Celine covered her mother's hand.
"It doesn't feel real to me either."
Far away, the news reached the Vale Clan.
Lance sat in his office when one of his remaining attendants entered.
"My lord."
Lance looked up.
"What?"
"The Aster Clan."
"What about them?"
"There is news."
Lance frowned.
"Speak."
"Celine is pregnant."
Silence.
Lance's expression hardened.
"What?"
"She is expecting a child."
Lance stood.
He walked toward the window.
Outside, the Vale compound seemed emptier every day.
Another family had left that morning.
Another had announced their intention to leave.
The clan was shrinking.
Meanwhile, the Asters were growing.
Not only in numbers.
In spirit.
In wealth.
In confidence.
And now there would be another generation.
Lance clenched his fists.
"They should be broken."
The attendant remained silent.
Lance turned.
"Leo was supposed to be isolated."
"Instead, he's surrounded by people."
"He was supposed to be grieving."
"Instead, he's building."
"He was supposed to lose everything."
"Instead, he's creating something."
Lance's voice became bitter.
"He's happy."
That seemed to anger him more than anything else.
"He has everything I wanted taken from him."
The attendant said nothing.
Lance looked toward the distant lights of the Aster territory.
"Their numbers grow."
"Every week."
"Every month."
"And now children."
He slammed his hand against the table.
"They're building a future."
Silas stood in the shadows of another room.
Lance turned toward him.
"You heard?"
Silas nodded.
"I heard."
"What do you think?"
Silas was silent.
Then he said:
"The seal is stronger."
Lance frowned.
"What?"
Silas looked toward the mountains.
"I can't hear it anymore."
"The voice."
"The thing inside the Hollow."
"I can no longer hear it."
Lance stared at him.
"Are you certain?"
"Yes."
Silas closed his eyes.
"For months, I could hear it."
Whispers.
Words.
Promises.
Something calling from beyond the sealed entrance.
But now there was nothing.
Silence.
"The elders have strengthened the seal."
Lance frowned.
"Can they stop it?"
Silas shook his head.
"Perhaps temporarily."
"Then the Hollow isn't gone."
"No."
Silas smiled faintly.
"It's simply quiet."
Lance stared at him.
"And you're certain?"
"The seal has stopped the connection."
"But that doesn't mean the thing inside is gone."
Silas's expression became cold.
"It is still there."
Waiting.
Silas turned toward Lance.
"We cannot act openly."
Lance nodded.
"Not yet."
"The Asters are too strong."
"They have the town."
"The elders."
"The school."
"Their defenses."
"And now more families arrive every week."
Lance's jaw tightened.
"Then we wait."
Silas nodded.
"Exactly."
"What are we waiting for?"
"The opportunity."
Silas looked toward the mountains.
"And eventually, there will be one."
Back at the Aster Clan, none of them knew what was being discussed.
They were too busy celebrating.
And planning.
Marcus had already begun discussing how the house could be expanded.
Elara had begun making lists of everything a baby would need.
The healers were preparing special meals.
The schoolchildren had started making gifts.
The town had offered anything the family might require.
And Leo?
Leo sat beneath the oak with Celine and Catherine.
Celine rested her head against his shoulder.
Catherine sat beside them.
Leo looked around at the compound.
The walls.
The homes.
The school.
The library.
The fields.
The growing settlement.
The people.
Their family.
"I never imagined this," he whispered.
Celine smiled.
"Neither did I."
Catherine tilted her head.
"What?"
Leo looked at them.
"Any of this."
"The clan."
"The school."
"The people."
"You."
"And now..."
He gently placed his hand over Celine's.
"A child."
Catherine smiled.
"Our child."
Leo nodded.
"Our family is growing."
Celine leaned closer to him.
"So is the clan."
Leo looked across the settlement.
He could hear construction continuing even at night.
Another house was being built.
Another family was arriving.
Another field was being prepared.
The Aster Clan was expanding.
And somewhere beyond the walls, another generation was already beginning.
For the first time, Leo didn't think about what the Asters had survived.
He thought about what they would become.
And beneath the mountains, the Hollow remained silent.
The seal held.
For now.
But the Asters continued to grow.
And with every new home, every new student, every new family, and now every new child, the future became something far more difficult for their enemies to destroy.
