The Vanguard sat riding high in the calm harbor water at Pier Fourteen.

Her dark iron hull had been stripped of its temporary polar ice-guards, her twin steam turbines overhauled by the Oakhaven drydock yards, and her forward deck retrofitted with a long, reinforced bronze rail plane designed to launch a high-speed subterranean scout chassis the Equinox.

Elias stood on the forecastle deck, watching three crane crews lower two massive, lead-shielded storage batteries into the hold.

He wore his black woolen work coat against the salt spray, his hands resting in his pockets, his golden eyes scanning the horizon where the open sea met the dark line of the sky. Beside him, Lira rested on an iron capstan. "What about the telegraphic relays, Marcus?" Elias asked without turning around.

"The long-range wireless relays on the mainmast are receiving clear, zero-noise signals from all four surface stations," Marcus replied, opening his logbook to show a clean chart of uninterrupted sine waves. "Sol-Aethel reports that the municipal grid voltage hasn’t varied by a fraction of a millivolt since you set the fifth scale. Chancellor Vane sent a personal wire through the Assembly line three hours ago."

"What did Vane say?" Jacob asked, joining them from the hatchway while carrying a four-inch bronze coupling collar over his shoulder.

"He didn’t offer congratulations," Marcus smiled faintly. "He simply asked if he should update the central textbook on planetary mechanics to include the Sixth Horizon."

"Tell him to wait," Elias said, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching his lips. "We haven’t written the equations for the peak yet."

Section II: The Sounding of the Abyssal Fault

Six hundred miles south-southwest of Oakhaven lay the Great Trench of the Maw, a jagged, six-mile-deep oceanic fissure that marked the physical boundary where the continental shelf of the Republic plunged down into the abyssal floor of the Southern Sea.

It was a region historically avoided by commercial steamships and private whaling fleets. The weather above the Maw was dominated by perpetual, low-hanging rain squalls, and the water below was characterized by violent, unpredictable thermal plumes caused by magma chambers venting directly into the sea floor.

Yet as the Vanguard reached the northern lip of the trench at dawn three days later, the sea was impossibly calm.

The rain had stopped. The ink-black water stretched out like a sheet of polished obsidian, reflecting the deep crimson light of the rising sun.

Elias stood on the wheelhouse roof, holding a heavy, brass-encased acoustic echo-sounder over the side. The device was connected to a fine copper wire that unspooled from a precision gear drum mounted on the bridge rail.

"Depth reading: four thousand fathoms," Elias called down through the open skylight to Marcus in the chartroom. "Temperature at the sea floor: thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit. Pressure: eight hundred atmospheres."

"The bottom water is completely static, Elias!" Marcus called back, his pen scratching furiously against the thick parchment of a fresh depth chart. "There are no upward thermal plumes! The magma vents along the fault line have ceased their erratic boiling!"

"They haven’t ceased, Marcus," Elias corrected gently, adjusting the sensitivity dial on the echo-sounder. "The heat is no longer escaping as chaotic volcanic steam. The Core Vault is drawing the thermal energy laterally, channeling it through the basalt floor toward the southern pole."

Lira stood at the bowsprit, her front paws planted on the iron scrollwork.

Her forehead crystal was focused straight down into the abyssal depths, projecting a thick, brilliant beam of sapphire light that cut through the dark water like a solid glass rod.

Through the clear sapphire beam, two miles below the surface, a massive structure began to show its outline on the ocean floor.

It was the Iron Rail of the Maw: a pair of continuous, six-foot-wide tracks forged from solid, non-corrosive bronze-iron alloy, resting on massive hexagonal basalt sleepers anchored directly into the bed of the trench. The rails extended from the northern abyss in an absolute, perfectly straight line, heading south toward the unmapped expanse of the Sixth Horizon.

"It’s a subterranean transit bed," Jacob breathed, leaning over the bridge railing with his spyglass pressed to his eye. "Master Julian didn’t just build a map down there, Elias. He laid an iron road straight across the ocean floor!"

"The rails were laid during the excavation of the First Era," Elias explained, stepping down to the main deck. "Before the surface cartels broke the energy balance. They were built to move heavy machinery between the central nodes without exposing the cargo to surface storms or polar ice."

"And the Equinox can ride those rails?" Jacob asked, pointing toward the streamlined, seven-ton bronze scout chassis resting on the deck launching ramp.

"The Equinox was built for them," Elias said.
