The Scowling Sidekick: A My Hero Academia Fanfiction
Eventful Work Studies****Trigger Warning: This chapter has a scene with a sexual assault that may be uncomfortable to some readers. Rows of dotted lines are before and after the scene in case you need to skip it for your mental health. Reader discretion is advised.****
Since these work studies are mandatory, everyone got paired with a reputable hero agency during our winter break. Aya-chan was paired with Gang Orca because he is not only familiar with her quirks but also her secrets, and he has the principal’s seal of approval. I got paired with Edgeshot, but he is currently in a team-up with Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady. Kaminari and Mineta came, too, but they are learning more from Kamui Woods and Mt. Lady than Edgeshot. Edgeshot particularly likes my ninja aesthetic and wanted to work with me. To be honest, I really fucking hate him picking me just because of my outfit and how I look. I obviously also hate not being paired with my beloved, but I can’t be too absorbed in my feelings, since I am out in the open with a huge target on my back.
Even though they are in a team-up together, during the work study, since both my quirk and Edgeshot’s quirks are so quick, they branched off, so I can try to learn to keep up in a fast-paced environment together with Edgeshot. Kamui is working together with Mt. Lady, Kaminari, and Mineta. It isn’t like they are far away, so if we need backup at any time, he can use his pro-earpiece to request their assistance.
I am sure that the principal has told him about me if he hasn’t already put two and two together. I sigh as we walk down the street on patrol, and he asks, “What is wrong, Hops?” I ask him, feeling a bit prickly, “Tsk. Didn’t Principal Nezu tell you that I am being targeted? Why would you agree to take on a high-risk work study like me?” Edgeshot responds while still keeping his head on a swivel, “Being a ninja means being able to adapt in high-stress situations. I picked you for more than your hero aesthetic, Hops. I have seen your progress, and you have the makings to be a great pro.” I smack my teeth in response, thinking that he is full of bullshit.
He asks me as we continue to patrol, “So, Hops, have you learned that new Observation Haki stuff yet? I have only seen you use the Armament Haki, and I believe that, being a ninja, you would benefit from using it.” I sigh, “Flustrated is gifted in both, unlike me.” He says seamlessly as he snags a purse that a thief stole and incapacitates him effortlessly, “I see. Then work on what you do have talent for and be aware of your surroundings. Before this Haki stuff, we had to practice situational awareness and use parallel processing. You need to be able to do the same.”
I ask him as he restrains the unconscious villain and passes him off to a patrolling Police-Force officer, “What do you mean by parallel processing?” He says, “You need to be able to do multiple things at once, like it is as simple as breathing. Like me, talking with you and perceiving that a thief stole a purse simultaneously. You don’t need Observation Haki to do this. You want to get to the scene of where you are needed as quickly as possible, and that means being aware of your surroundings.” I nod, understanding what he means.
He goes to perch on a building using his quirk to quickly traverse, as I do the same. He tells me as we overlook the city, “Listen to the sounds of the city. Focus on the abnormalities.” I listen, and it sounds like a bunch of chaos. He asks me, “What do you hear?” I say, feeling a tad overwhelmed with the chaos invading my ears, “Tsk. Car horns and indistinct chaos.” He pats the hood of my ninja-hero costume, “You will get it eventually. For now, just follow me.” I nod, and I follow him as he flies through the air using his quirk while flying using my quirk.
We move quickly throughout his jurisdiction to resolve a wide range of incidents, from villain attacks to car accidents and other misfortunes that can befall civilians. Today alone, we stopped a bank robbery, saved a bus full of elementary students that was dangling off a bridge, saved an innocent bystander from a falling potted plant from several stories high that was knocked off a balcony by accident, and saved an elderly man from being hit by traffic.
The more I followed Edgeshot, the more I think he is using a different variation of Observation Haki than Aya-chan uses, and he just doesn’t know it. It makes me wonder if I can learn that same kind of Observation Haki. I struggle with Observation Haki for things related to my person/immediate vicinity, but maybe I can learn to pick up on my environment as he can? When I tried to learn Observation Haki, I always tried to apply it as Aya-chan does, focusing on incoming threats in my immediate vicinity or on people taking notice of me, like she is also good at. I will try my best to learn from his example.
Edgeshot is apparently really good at Observation Haki, both for detecting incoming threats and for perceiving his environment, but he doesn’t seem very compatible with armament. It complements his hero work, and he doesn’t mind not being able to use armament. Not like I asked his opinion or anything, but that is what I picked up on. I mean, I was cool with only being able to use armament at first, so I get it. Though his encouragement is making me want to try Observation Haki again.
I spend the next several days really focusing on using this different version of Observation Haki as I follow behind Edgeshot. He is so quick with it that it is hard to keep up. I mean, not literally, because my quirk makes it easy to follow him physically, but it is hard to focus on my environment when he is constantly moving. He picked up on my struggle, and when he moved, he would call out what he heard so I could listen for it as we moved to each incident.
After attending to several incidents, we perch on a roof, drinking water to rehydrate. Edgeshot’s Observation Haki triggers just like Aya-chan’s. I drop my water and go to turn in the direction that he is looking, and before I can pop another jawbreaker to teleport, my feet get trapped by vines coming out of the rooftop. While trapped, I pop a jawbreaker, but I can’t exactly teleport because my normal hops aren’t strong enough to take a large building like this with me. A couple of villains are working together, it seems, and Edgeshot is engaging in combat with a villain who can turn his body into water. Edgeshot seems to be a bad match for them. The other villain is a plant-based one targeting me.
Sir Floof and Squash start wiggling in their balls like they want to help, but we are very high up right now, and I can’t teleport to save them right now. I taught them how to quirk-walk and use haki, but Squash, in particular, is a wild card with both because of her frequent headaches. I tell them, “We are very high, try to stay in your pokéballs for your own safety.” I rip my suit on my arms and sharpen my skin using armament to cut the vines. He quickly replaces what I cut and continues to keep me pinned while also shooting a sharp vine into my shoulder, and I hiss with pain. His accomplice yells as he fights a struggling Edgeshot, “Watch it! The boss says that he needs her alive!” The vine guy says, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep her alive.”
Since I am pinned and can’t teleport, I use my Dark Pulse quirk and infuse it with haki. It causes the villain to flinch, and I use that time to remove the vines at my feet, and I teleport high and go to strike him with my upgraded Meteor Hop. He uses his vines at the last second to shield himself, similar to that chick from class 1-B, so he doesn’t take any damage, and it causes a crater in the roof. The moment my feet touch the ground again, he pins me down again.
I don’t think I’ll get lucky with my dark pulse quirk again, and I only have 14 more tries. I’ll have to think of something. I use my finger skin to make armament whips to distract him while I think, as he intercepts my whips with vine whips of his own. I wish that I could have independent moving whips like Aya-chan’s tentacles are. It would make this a lot easier. I wonder if I could weaponize my jawbreakers? As I use one hand to do simplified whip patterns, I whisper to Sir Floof’s ball, “I need you to distract him for a moment, Sir.” Sir Floof comes out, and he uses his moonblast quirk that is haki-infused to distract the villain as I grab a jawbreaker with my other hand and use my skin to pull it back like a sling shot, infuse it with haki, then I shoot it. It sneaks past his defenses and hits him in the forehead, knocking him out. As he falls, I hear Edgeshot calling for assistance from his teammates as he struggles.
I cut the vines from my feet and take out an empty pokéball from my outfit, capture the villain with it, and use a locking mechanism that Hatsume made to make sure he can’t escape with willpower when he wakes up. My shoulder hurts like a bitch, and I grab it, causing my hand to get bloody in the process as I check on Edgeshot’s fight. I have Sir Floof return to his pokeball as I watch. Edgeshot’s usual fighting style isn’t working against this villain since this villain can turn his body into water. So, Edgeshot’s attacks just pass right through, and he is taking more damage than he is giving. I want to help him, but I feel like I would be in the same boat. Actually, worse, because if I hit his body just right, I would become paralyzed. Assuming his body is salt water, which I don’t know for sure.
Wait!
I call out Squash and ask her, “Can you use your Disable quirk on that water villain?” Squash responds, “Psy!” She uses her quirk, and the water villain takes the next attack Edgeshot does, and it incapacitates him. I use another empty pokéball and lock him in. Edgeshot sighs in relief that the fight is over and then gets really worried upon seeing me wounded. He comes over to check on me while also petting Squash in gratitude, and he asks, “Are you alright, Hops?” I nod and respond, “It is just a scratch.” A scratch that hurts like a bitch, but I am not going to say that.
He knows it hurts, and before we go, he says, “After we take these villains to jail, I’ll take you to Recovery Girl.” I don’t know how he can be worried about me when he looks to be in a lot worse shape right now. I nod as I grip my shoulder with my bloodied hand. The way those villains talked made it seem like they worked for All for One. The guy I fought seemed like he had the Leaf-Chick’s father’s stolen quirk. I never saw them with the League of Villains, so they must be loyal to All For One rather than Shigaraki. He gains direct followers by gifting quirks, and he must have given those villains those quirks or changed their quirks to what they desired. It makes sense for the plant guy since he is using a stolen quirk.
Just before we move to the jail, Mt. Lady, Kamui Woods, Kaminari, and Mineta arrive in response to the backup request. Edgeshot says, “I was just about to radio you to let you know that we were able to take care of the villains.” Mt. Lady asks, “Are you ok? You seem to be in rough shape, Edgeshot.” Edgeshot tells them that the villain was a bad matchup, but that we were able to defeat him with teamwork thanks to Squash’s quirk.
{Ayaka’s POV}
I am here as the lone work study for Gang Orca. Jiro and Shoji were initially going to come here, but since I am such a high-profile target, they thought it best to split us up. So they followed Koda to study under the pro-hero, Wash. It's been a few days since we started these work studies, and I feel particularly grumpy not being able to be with my precious Kai-chan.
I would text her, but I know she is focused on keeping up with Edgeshot and his fast-paced patrols while also staying vigilant because she is being targeted. Gang Orca has been following up on a quirk enhancement smuggling ring that is continuing to ship an illegal, black-market drug called Trigger via the ocean. The same operation that Tsu and Ochaco worked on yesterday during a team-up with Ryukyu’s and Selkie’s agency, but they apparently only got the small-time thugs who weren’t big players.
While we were investigating over the past few days, I offered Gang Orca the Surf HM, and he accepted it. Though he said he could only use it believably in the ocean. Hence, he would have to limit his usage of his new Surf quirk. Gang Orca has been working on locating some of the drug traffickers by not only using his quirk to use his echolocation, but also communicating with the Japanese Navy and other hero agencies like Selkie’s, who are also tracking the drug trafficking.
Gang Orca found evidence that a person with an aquatic quirk is moving Trigger underwater to avoid detection. Specifically, he found remnants of waterproof receptacles and signs of a brutal struggle from what seemed to be a dispute between rival organizations in controlling the illegal goods while using his echolocation. He followed their trail to an underwater cave, which he thinks is their base for now. I turned into an octopus and latched onto him while he was searching, so I could get some experience. They haven’t yet realized we know their location, and Gang Orca is using that to our advantage.
He is gathering people with aquatic quirks from his agency and teaming up with Selkie for a sting operation. Trigger is also being shipped to neighboring countries like China and Korea, causing international issues as villains become overpowered by enhancing their quirks. The underwater cave we found is probably another low-time run operation with no ties to whoever is pulling the strings, just like the shipment that Ochaco and Tsu helped stop the other day. Just like them, we want to disrupt their operations however we can as we figure things out.
Selkie doesn’t have any work studies this round, so it is just him and his sidekicks. His number-one sidekick will stay on the boat, and they will communicate using his clicks, according to our mission brief. He mentioned that they will probably use Trigger to avoid capture, like the villain who used a smokescreen to escape his team during his last operation yesterday. Gang Orca was a tad reluctant to let me go along, but I feel like my quirk could come in handy, especially with my neurotoxin, and by utilizing pokéballs and the locking mechanisms the bimbo made for us. I gave a few to the participating heroes, who will return them to me after the sting, since they are my support items.
When it is time to go, Gang Orca puts his finger to his mouth, and he motions everyone to join him. I transform into an octopus and attach myself to him, then he dives into the water, as does the rest of the team, infiltrating. We don’t know what it is going to look like in there at all, and we don’t know the logistics of how the fight is going to turn out, but that is part of being a hero. Being able to quickly adapt and adjust accordingly. The cave is very dark, and once we reach a certain point, we see underwater lights that let us know we are definitely on the right track.
I am starting to get really nervous, as I sense many villains ahead with my Observation Haki. I have never fought against someone who has been enhanced, and the fight will probably turn out that way today. It is very frightening to think about. Gang Orca senses my nervousness in my grip from my tentacles holding tighter, and he gives me a silent thumbs up as he dolphin-kicks (or should I say Orca kicks?) us through the cave entrance. Near the end of the tunnel, we are swimming directly up, and at the end, there is air because of the space we are in.
We hop out, and Gang Orca confronts the villains while I transform back into my human form. There is a great white shark man who seems to be the leader of this ragtag group of villains, and he sees me, and he chuckles, “You guys take care of the heroes while I take care of the brat. We are going to be rich by the end of today. Everyone will know of the great villain, Leviathan!” The villains who are staying inject themselves with red tubes, which I assume are Trigger, and the aquatic villains who are heteromorphs evolve into extremely villainous-looking life-forms as they grow extra teeth and their bodies enlarge. The most frightening of them all is a swordfish villain whose nose goes from a simple sword to a serrated one.
There were some regular human villains amongst them who apparently used scuba gear to get here, who had different quirks. One of them has a rubber body, and after taking Trigger, they were able to make their surroundings turn to rubber as well. Just like Luffy did during his fight with Kaido. Though this villain isn’t having a cartoonish fight like Luffy had, it is terrifying. Selkie and Gang Orca are definitely occupied, along with their sidekicks, so I am on my own at the moment. It appears that Gang Orca’s sidekicks know haki and are doing well, but Selkie and his sidekicks are struggling, but holding their own.
I start fighting immediately since it is just this villain and me. I use future sight to get some good hits with my armament haki before retreating. The great white shark, Leviathan, licks his lips towards me as he seems very entertained, and he says, “I think I'll have some fun with you before I kill you.” Why did this villain have to say something like that while I am here?! He instantly creeps me out, and I can’t use my quirk. He approaches me while the other heroes are fighting the other villains. I use my rock tomb quirk to create a buffer between us and obstruct the cave, making it easier for us to fight these villains. The shark villain bites the boulders and crushes them with some effort as the remnants of the boulders fall from the periphery of his mouth while swallowing the rest.

My stomach feels like it is lodged in my throat as cold sweat drops from my wet forehead. I make a few tentacles and hit him a few times with armament tentacle slams, but I feel my armament haki wavering because of my terrified/creeped-out mental state. He is strong, and he grabs one of my tentacles and slams me into one of the boulders that remained from my quirk. I used shaky armament to help protect myself in the process, but the shaky armament causes me to get pretty bruised up from the impact.
I am so dizzy and discombobulated from the impact. He continues to hold my tentacle, and I am starting to panic, and I let loose some ink to try to blind him, but he chuckles while blinded, while still pulling me in. I even secrete neurotoxin into him, but that barely slows him down.
Shit.
I remember that sharks have a natural resistance to neurotoxins and prey upon cephalopods like myself. I try to pull the kunai knives covering my arms like scales out for active defense using spare tentacles, but I can't because I'm creeped out by the villain, and they are stuck in 2D. He pulls me to him and holds me tight and grabs one of my breasts roughly with one hand over my hero costume. He uses his nose to guide him to the cave entrance, and I hear Gang Orca yell while trying to fight his way to me, “Flustrated!” The villain splashes as he dives with both of us, and he swims while letting the ocean water wash away the ink I sprayed him with. I squirm and try to break free with every fiber of my being, and try to focus on my quirk to try and use my ultimate, but I am way too creeped out to be able to use it without Kai-chan here.
My heart is beating a mile a minute as this villain swims very quickly to a secondary location that seems several miles away.
Is this really the end of the line for me?
This seems like a very horrible way to die, and I am terrified.
We reach another underwater cave that apparently serves as a secondary hideout for these villains, and when we get there, there is another open-air space inside, like the last one. He pins me down on the stone ground of the cave, and he rips my hero costume and exposes my naked, tattooed body. I yell at him while my heart beats so loud I can barely think, “If you are going to kill me, just kill me!” He laughs in a very creepy way, which makes me even more terrified and creeped out, then he says, “I will kill you after I have had my fun first. Don’t worry, you are going to be a wonderful snack.”
As he says that he drools a bit as if he intends to eat my body, leaving my head to collect the bounty on me. I start screaming and squirming, turning random body parts into an octopus as he presses his groin between my legs so I can feel his hard penis through his swim trunks. I am frozen in fear since nothing I do seems to be working, and I close my eyes as my screams turn into shaky, terrified breaths.
Garlic, unable to take it anymore, comes out, and he hits the villain with his razor leaf quirk infused with haki. Leviathan hits me hard in the face, which makes me dizzy again, as he gets up and body slams into Garlic and bites him as Garlic tries to choke him with his vines before Garlic can protect himself with his armament. Or maybe he let him bite him on purpose, since he is poisonous. If we survive this, I’ll have to ask him. The shark villain had to release Garlic because he needed to breathe, leaving a few rows of teeth marks in Garlic’s flesh.
The villain spits out what I assume is poison from Garlic and staggers as if poisoned from biting Garlic. I yell while crying tears of desperation, “Garlic, no!” I scoot myself backward to try to escape and use my octopus camouflage to attempt to hide from him. Garlic seems a little stunned from the bite, and Leviathan says with venom in his words, “Now stay down, you vile, disgusting creature.”
He comes back over to me and lowers his trunks and positions himself between my legs. I start to panic and scream, “NO! GET AWAY FROM ME! DON’T TOUCH ME!” Garlic seems to have regained his senses from the bite, and he is furious. Garlic tries to use his solar beam quirk, but it isn’t as strong as it is when he has good sunlight. However, he was able to infuse it with haki to make up for the lack of sunlight. The villain got hit in the side of his torso with it, leaving a painful-looking burn. Even though it wasn’t its strongest, the villain winced in pain as if it was an effective hit, and he ran to Garlic and started punching him.
Garlic had his armament haki engaged and started slamming him with a barrage of armament vine whips in his fury.

By this time, Sirius arrives with backup heroes. Sirius yells with concern as she runs towards Leviathan with a steel pipe, “Flustrated! We are here to save you!” Leviathan retreats from Garlic’s attack and injects himself with Trigger. He doubles in size, becomes enormous, and gets even more rows of terrifying teeth. He runs to me, ignoring Sirius, then says, “I will get this bounty one way or another!” He turns his head and goes to bite me to try to separate my head from my legs. Shit! I need to calm my mind for just a brief moment so I can use my haki to protect myself.
At this moment, it feels as if time is slowing down. I think as his terrifying teeth are approaching me in slow motion, I feel so much relieved knowing that Sirius is here with a lot of heroes as backup. That thought helped me calm the terror in my mind. I was barely able to activate my haki in time, and was able to avoid it just enough to avoid a fatal blow by transforming into an octopus at the last second and squirming for my life. Since it happened so fast, I couldn’t use armament haki on my whole body and was only able to use it on my vital organs. Sirius hits him with the pipe as he bites, which helps nudge his teeth away from more of my vitals.
The attack still did major damage to me. He took my arm and some of my side in the process, and several of my octopus legs, which also took one of my legs for my human form. His mouth is bleeding from losing a few teeth to my armament on my vital organs, but he doesn’t slow down or even flinch in pain. He swallows my body parts, licks his lips, and says, “I am going to enjoy eating the rest of you.” I lost my phone since I didn’t move that tattoo, since he ate that arm, but that is the least of my worries right now. Garlic wasn’t able to protect me because he flinched from his bite wound again, since it is a gruesome wound.
Leviathan smiles creepily as I see his teeth, which he lost, regrow back as if he had a regeneration quirk, though it is probably just his shark quirk. Sirius and the other sidekicks, who are here as a reinforcement force, force him to acknowledge them as they start fighting. He says to me as he fights them, “I will come back and finish you when I am done with these guys.” I am gushing my blue blood at the moment since my octopus powers haven’t activated yet to stop the bleeding, and I start to feel faint. I force myself to stay awake, and I summon more boulders from my rock tomb quirk. A few of them hit the villain, and then he bites them to make them crumble into tiny pieces, as he did before. However, he did it as if it were tons easier this time.
The sidekicks are getting tossed around like they are ragdolls, and some of Selkie’s sidekicks, whom I don’t know personally, get eaten by this villain in a gruesome manner. There is so much blood and random body parts scattered everywhere in this cave.
A sea of crimson.
Garlic recovers from flinching and gets back in the fight, even more fueled with rage since I got very wounded by this villain. He throws a barrage of haki-infused razor leaves at Leviathan and tries to take his attention off the heroes, but Leviathan wants to get rid of as many heroes as he can. Though the more I look, it seems as though he recovers some with each hero he eats. So, he continues to rampage against the heroes in sailor uniforms as he takes on a lot of damage while simultaneously recovering as he eats heroes. Garlic is trying his best to save the heroes here with his attacks, as he knows that the heroes are here to help me.
Since I was missing a large part of my human form, I stayed an octopus and crawled to where Garlic was desperately fighting, leaving a blue blood trail, then transformed back into a human when I got to him. At this moment, I am glad I moved the bag from my left palm to my stomach. I hardly ever used it while it was in my hand, and it is more hidden on my stomach. It also frees up my hands to use my quirk more freely. If I didn’t do this, I wouldn’t have had any potions to give him. I pulled out a potion and sprayed it on his wounds as he continued to fight in his rage. I want to let him rest, but he is the only reason why more heroes haven’t died yet at this time, since his attacks seem to be very effective and keep him damaged.
I collapse on the ground from my already seated position and turn my head to look at the desperate heroes protecting me. The superpowered villain lifts Sirius and tosses her in the air, and just as he is about to eat her whole, Gang Orca jumps out of the water at the entrance with high speed and slams into him with armament. Sirius falls to the ground and grunts upon the impact as her leg breaks from the awkward fall. At this point, Garlic’s blood loss from the bite caused him to faint.
I feel so much safer with Gang Orca here, and the trauma from the fight and the quick blood loss catches up to me. I reach over as I lie here next to my best friend and tap him with my tattoo to put him safely back into his PokéBall. Even though by this point my octopus body has stopped the bleeding, I have bled a lot. I think the adrenaline that was present during the panic has all left, and I am now exhausted. I find myself struggling to keep my eyes open as they close, as Gang Orca fights Leviathan, who is seemingly on his last legs since Garlic almost took him out with his rage-filled attacks.
