Twenty years ago people thought the world was over.
Nope.
Not even close.
It didn’t explode.
There wasn’t a disease that killed everyone.
Hell there wasn’t even a nuclear war.
It started with a whisper.
Thousands of tear falls from demonic entities fell from the skies above. Piercing through buildings, clouds, land; it covered everything. Cities. Oceans. Forests. Deserts...
Demons had fallen from the skies.
Humans fought them and tried their hardest, but there was no way we could win.
The demons were too strong.
Where ever they stepped the world would become tainted. Trees would warp into demonic forests
full of knife like vines and flesh eating fruit. Rivers turned black and thick.
Animals evolved into monsters that hunted down any form of life they could get their claws on.
Cities weren’t safe.
It took humans years before they accepted the fact that they were alone.
By then we didn’t care to try and take back the planet.
All we wanted was to survive.
Survive was what Austin Veyron was doing his best at.
Six years.
The weak human scrounged through the remains of an abandoned mall, white knuckles grasping
onto a rusted blade in his right hand.
Slowly.
Careful not to make any noise.
Silently.
Austin’s shoes had long been shredded into whatever resembled leather last. The bottom of his sneakers were so worn that he could feel every small rock and pebble with every movement he
made.
Even his jacket had tears along his sleeves and sides. Making strips of skin Austin knew was
unhealthy.
Austin huffed out a sigh, eyeing his trembling hands.
Fear wasn’t the cause of his hands shaking.
Austin was hungry.
Austin hadn’t eaten in nine days.
Nine Days.
Nine days of chewing on leather and dried beef jerky. After the first couple days of minimal eating Austin spent his time searching though abandoned apartment buildings and houses for something that actually looked like food and wasn’t crawling with roaches.
It never was enough.
Never was enough food.
For the past three days Austin lived off of bugs and tree roots. Twice he even resorted back to
chewing on leather.
Those coughing episodes still haunted him at night.
His stomach painfully squeezed every few seconds reminding him how frail he actually was.
Austin carefully made his way into what remained of a gas station. Half the roof had collapsed on itself, slamming shelves to the ground and splattering crumbs everywhere where food used to be.
Pushing through splinters and dust clouds Austin continued to claw through shelves.
One shelf.
Fuck.
Another shelf.
Fuck fuck fuck.
Austin dropped his knife onto the ground and began kicking through crumbs.
’ Crack ’
Empty wrapper.
God damnit.
Austin slammed his hand onto a cabinet, ripping it open in one quick movement.
Empty.
"Come on..." Austin mumbled under his breath. He dropped down to his knees in defeat, staring
blankly at the ground.
Seconds went by.
Suddenly Austin let out a laugh.
Austin laughed because he was weak.
Austin laughed because he was starving himself to death.
"Nine days..." Austin scoffed, slowly pulling himself up into a sitting position. "What the fuck is nine
supposed to do to me?" His stomach growled loudly in response.
Laughing to himself he rose to his feet slowly. Cleaning the dust of himself.
There was only one place left that Austin could possibly scavenge from.
Abandoned houses.
If he didn’t find food here...well Austin didn’t finish his sentence.
Austin didn’t have to.
Echoes of footsteps could be heard as Austin stalked out of the store. He halted in his step for a moment. Something smelled funny.
Fresh smelling funny.
Blood.
Austin could hear his heart beating erratically in his ears.
Slowly turning his head from left to right Austin scanned the area, trying to figure out where the
smell was coming from.
There it was.
Austin could smell it coming from down that alley.
Dragging his feet along the ground Austin began to run. Following the scent of fresh blood
through abandoned town. Darting in and out of alley ways he ran down one then another until...
He froze.
Something felt off.
The smell of blood was dissipating.
Footsteps.
Heavy footsteps that got louder with every second he took.
Someone else was here.
"Auuuuuuuurrrgggh..." Groaning loudly Austin spun around to see what horror was stalking behind him.
Something large lumbered into view.
Enormous and vile. It had to be twice Austin’s size if not more. Wide eyed Austin examined every gruesome feature this monster had to offer.
Four bulging arms covered in dark muscles ended with razor sharp claws that dripped fresh demon blood. Skeleton like straps hung off its back as its head hung low with its mouth agape.
Bits of bloody muscles covered its face.
Human but not quite. At one gaze you could tell it was human, but upon further observation you
could tell it wasn’t human enough to be called one.
Austin jolted himself out of his trance, taking a few steps back. gulping down air.
A Demon.
By now everybody knew about them.
All you needed to do was look up on the internet before it all went down. Stories were told about them to kids after school.
Austin gulped down nervously, taking another step back. He saw the movies they starred in.
This fucker looked like somebody reached down into Hell and ripped the ugliest demon out.
Taking a deep breath Austin stepped forward, scared shitless with every step he took.
His mind screamed at him to turn around but Austin didn’t listen.
"No..." He muttered under his breath, taking another step forward.
"You know what they say." Austin whispered low, eyes glued to the demon corpse in front of him.
"Don’ touch demon blood." Speaking words of non sense Austin eyed the demon corpse once more.
"A rule made for a reason." Austin trembled, placing his hands near the carcass.
Carefully not to drip anymore blood from the creature Austin extended his fingers and touched the demon.
"Don’ eat demon meat."
"There’s always a first time."
Running his fingers along the side of the creature Austin gripped the demon by its side. Pausing
when he felt life slop inside its side.
"Don’t let demon..."
Austin forcefully ripped the knife into the creature, ripping it open from side to side.
The knife bounced right off.
Shit.
Snatching the knife out of his hands Austin began to tear the creature apart with his bare hands.
Black chunks of meat fell off onto the dirty ground with every savage tear.
Bloody and covered in dark veins Austin eyed up the chunk of demonic meat in front of him.
It looked so juicy.
Austin closed his eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep.
’DON’T DO IT AUSTIN... YOU’LL REGRET IT...
SAVE IT FOR LATER, YOU’LL NEED THE STRENGTH...’
’YOU’RE NOT FULL YET... ’
Too late.
Austin ripped his eyes open, stuffing the slab of meat into his mouth.
Slamming his jaw onto the meat he began to chew with all of his might.
Seconds went by and then...
Austin blinked.
Fuck.
That shit tasted horrible.
Metallic. Sour. Just downright nasty.
Austin began to chew, spices burning down his throat as he swallowed.
Suddenly Austin began to cough, only partially lifting his head to spit out the foul demon meat.
That’s when he felt it.
His bones began to crack apart inside his body. Twitching from side to side Austin’s body violently convulsed.
Blood frothed from his mouth as he collapsed down to his knees. Black veins webbed out from the demons body and crawled all over Austin.
[UNKNOWN ORGANIC MATTER DETECTED.]
Austin whited out, everything began to shake.
[DEMONIC FLESH CONSUMED.]
[AUTO SCAN INITIATED...]
Web like veins covered Austin’s body as something began to tug and rip at his body.
[SCAN COMPLETE.]
[COMPATIBILITY ANALYSIS INITIATED.]
"Auuuurrggh!" Austin screamed, clutching onto the ground beneath him.
[BODY’S CYTOGENETIC MAKEUP]
[FAILS TO MATCH DEMENTIOUS SPECIES.]
His body pushed and pulled, as if it wanted to rip itself out of his skin.
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TO ME YOU BITCH!" Austin yelled out in agony, clutching tighter.
[SUGGESTED ACTION: DISCARD FOREIGN OBJECT.]
’WHAM! ’
Everything glitched and shook violently, causing Austin to put his hands over his face.
"Austin!" Someone yelled out frantically.
Austin screamed before he blacked out.
Austin woke up slowly, brains starting to register what was happening around him.
It was quiet.
Too quiet.
Eying his surroundings, Austin sat up straight. His eyes shot up to the sky, puzzled.
Dark clouds slowly floated across the sky.
He couldn’t believe it.
He could breathe. His lungs were actually functioning and it took everything in him not to jump up and sprint.
He was still panting when he placed his feet on the ground. Taking note of how his body felt
something else caught his eye.
He felt...good.
No. That wasn’t it.
Full. That was the word Austin was looking for.
Austin paused, his mouth dropped open. That wasn’t the word he was looking for either.
Satisfied was the word Austin was looking for.
Austin sat up, running his hands across his stomach.
It wasn’t there.
The uncomfortable knot in his stomach that had been bothering him for nine days straight had disappeared.
Austin shook his head in disbelief, eyeing his arms. Small scrapes covered his forearms from him digging through tree brushes. Dark circles and bruises littered his arms and hands from him
digging through empty apartment buildings and stores.
There was only one thing that was strange.
His legs.
Snapping his knees forward Austin jumped up from his seat.
Something was off.
His legs felt too strong.
Too powerful.
Austin’s eyes fixated on the demon carcass sitting in the middle of the street.
It was gone.
The black chunk of meat was missing.
[ADAPTATION COMPLETE]
A notification popped up in Austin’s vision.
Austin stared at the black words, blinking in confusion.

His heart began to race.

"Wha..." Austin began, mouth droping open again as he began to process everything that happened to him.
Suddenly Austin heard something.
A low rumble.
Austin tilted his head to the left, startled.
Three blocks over.
Something was creeping.
Austin could hear something scratching its claws along the ground. Something was digging through the bushes. Blood.
Demon blood.
It was warm, and wet.
Austin knew this because every time he would practice with his knife he would pretend he was hunting demons and then proceed to eat cows blood after he cut their throats.
His knuckles turned white from clutching his knife so hard.
Everything inside him wanted to sprint, run as far as his body could take him away from that damn thing.
Austin Veyron ran his whole fucking life.
Run. Hide Survive.
That wasn’t an order, that was something Austin lived by.
Except this time, Austin smiled.
His stomach growled.
A hungry predatory growl.
Austin grinned, his eyes widening.
Not because he was hungry.
Fuck no way.
Austin wanted to rip that demon apart and devour that demon. Wanted to tear that demon apart and stick his fingers down that demons throat and swallow that hot demon blood down.
For the first time in two decades...
Austin Veyron wasn’t afraid. Someone else should be.
