The living walls of the lobby twitched in his direction.

Slowly, ponderously – a waking thing with contemptuous lethargy. Balustrades splayed fingers, wall panels undulated into ribs. Vines grasping children recoiled into crushing bindings. Marble lamp post stretched stiffly like hooked talons. Screams rent the air.

"Hold them!" Austin shouted, and it sounded authoritative. Cut through adrenaline like paper. Disjointed panic coalesced into form.

Elena shoved everywhere like buckshot: jamming a bolt with bare palms, lashing wire around chain-throwers teeth, booting scaffold away from a tightening grip. "Kids off the railings!" she screamed. "If they anchor the column, we’re done for."

Seven moved like clockwork horror. Absolved every tendrilled lunge with wrench and calculation – crowbar to joint, pipe wrench slipped under clenched seam. The blunt savagery of Unit 742. Where coil of vine reached for the throat of a woman shielding a child, Seven parried and exchanged weight with gravity.

Gravity multiplied by reflex. He did not shout. Did not attempt to approach others with words. He closed distance.

Metal screeched above them like grinding teeth. Chain-warden authority pulsed down through the limb, voice garbled down to the low thrum of edicts; silken menace. The hotel shook at that language foreign to its earth. Let the anchors finish waking up against the hotel’s root and this place would cease being a home and become a weapon; mouthpiece for whomever had access to the node beneath the basement.

[Local graft integrity: failing. Hostile legal signature: Chain-warden class. Recommendation: access root-structure; scan anchor nodes. Caution: architectural feedback if disrupted.]

The solution to that problem was a game of russells. Austin could claw at the vines until his hands were bloody marble, or hack through the innards of the hotel and hope to trace the signal from the inside. Neither option felt free of casualties.

"Elena, take the east stair!" he growled. "Lock down the panel joints!" "Seven—spray the sprinklers calcify. Don’t let them anchor the center post." She yanked a manual release; living wall panels jerked where momentum had carried them. Seven braced a buckling lintel beam and ripped a child from coil of balustrade. "Not today," Seven stated, plainly. Simple absolution. "We’re not going to make monsters out of them."

Austin yanked free a rusted service grate. Brick and stone gave way to air smelling of lightning caught in trees and grounding rods. Root-lines cracked concrete like dry bone; their dull pulse generations beyond the Chain-warden hum of technology singing through cables. He ran hands loosely, chasing the thrum of the knot where the hotel’s nervous system condensed into pooling knot.

Where his fingers landed upon bulbous girth of graft-knot it answered him back with memory low and gritty; tinny ring of a service bell, powdered laundry soap, the chuckle of a bellman. The knot didn’t whisper its secrets through tendrilled synapse into his brain – it reminded him.

Cleaning carpets and hallways had been hardcoded long before laws knitted themselves into stone. Then his thumb connected with another tendril and blue compliance-trace burnt bright red.

Highlight masquerading as a weapon’s edge. Eat and gain automatic obedience. Pay the price. Or weave careful compromise with grace. He could taste them both in thought; fleeting reward of consuming obedience or the jagged persistent burn of symbiosis.

He pressed his palm against the knot and offered the System cognizance of a narrow reflection-chamber. It burrowed whispers into him – immaculate directive to maintain order and cleanliness of rooms and hallways, and hazy concept of faces from people who had eaten from this hotel’s restaurants. His mind clawed back at it with commands; parsed hallucinated legality. It tasted him for negotiation.

[Live contract tether established. Anchor stabilization: moderate. Disengagement flagged: unauthorized.]

Austin did not tear the knot from the wall. He wanted every handrail and staircase this dying monument could give them but he would not allow another fragment of Chain Warden consciousness burrow under their skin. Instead he gave minute impressions: memories of sleeping children congregating in hallways, metronomic beat of boot heels on marble stairs, starving bellboys devouring slices of meat and bread. Reactions hiccupped between concern and abstraction.

Movement stopped subtly in the lobby. Bone didn’t flex, but an inch made all the difference when your enemy shifted hotel-weight against anchors. He bought them with slivers of his mind cracked across fissures like spiderweb chips.

[Neural handshake complete. Acknowledging micro-agent authority: established local adaptation. Limitations: connection bleeds agent focus; assimilation limits enforcement recommended. Assimilation delta +1.2%.]

A ticker-flashed in his mind. Paying the knot for assimilation leech.

[Demonic Assimilation: 7.6%.]

You did not swallow demonscores core. Eat their souls. Concept alone should have revolted him, but the knot quivered beneath his mind’s attention and reciprocated like a human thanked for simply being present in his life. Fractured control of another consciousness Austin snapped anchors apart, unwound chains, rerouted water through key load-bearing columns. Devotion quieted when life found crevices to breathe.

Borrowed seconds of obedience enough to claw deeper still – concepts solidified in his vision until they refracted clear enough to see. Older, angrier lines of root cutting into knot beneath hotel laced into nameless sigil thrumming loudly like artery carved into foundation. Waiting.

Whole toldingsold told him where to crawl when his fingers brushed that network – travelers casting documents into alcoves that led down. Pattern of grease on cuffs mouths breathing into alcoves–and that guttural roar of lawstone flaring brightly where it made contact. Soft pop of metal home like a lid sealing.

Link that web of anchors to that sleeping knot and every building reaped and claimed in Malrec’s name would lend body and soul to it. Compliance wouldn’t bleed through the city slower than he could run it would crash down like avalanche. Every door he quietly secured tonight would be shattered beneath levels of people responding to instinct. Thinking. Screaming. Your skull would swim with every Enforcement higher-ups that took showers in marble to find this thing heartbeat.

"Austin," Elena breathed into his comm-link low enough that graft couldn’t poach his words and horn them through the building in admonishment. "There’s something down under the sub-basement. Big as all hell. Sleeping." Disjointed, still unsure if she believed it herself.

"We can cut it?" Seven asked him, voice broken. "Do whatever we need to keep it from anchoring."

Roots wound around his boots. Crept upwards and settled in place. Home. He traced absentmindedly down knotted weaves of the bulb. For shard of access it offered him – whispered breath held between obligation and coma. Embers of a child huddled beneath lobby doors, after it had happened. Then nothing. He could burrow down past this. Plant his mind into bedrock and unravel the knot.

[SYSTEM: No user recommended course of action. Caution: Core entanglement will alert higher authority.]

"If it wakes up," Seven murmured behind him, weight braced to re-anchor coil of animated conduit diving across the lobby floor, "it’s not gonna just be this building. Malrec is gonna know something woke up. Something big. They’re gonna come for it. We need to know what’s down there before it starts calling."

Austin let the knots gratitude wash over him – proud Systemmass simply glad he wasn’t considering it prey. He’d given it a portion of himself and it returned the favor tenfold with agency. Vocalizing that thought made his skin crawl with betrayal but gut agreed. Sacrifice. Gift recieved.

His spine flattened to the floor and stared at knot in rock. About five foot across, tendrils budding pneumatic grips into the stone it cored into bedrock from. Off-whites and grays melted into steady pulse of gold where root kissed monster.

It breathed. Methsed, lolling respirations of something alive sleeping.

SYSTEM: [WARNING: Unknown root- core located beneath sub-level. Authority signature: unknown. Activity: dormant. Recommendation: proceed with caution.]

He stared down at knot under earth like he would a lover sleeping. Veins of brilliant red and electric blue slashed across exposed innards. Fivefoot of repurposed Ancient tech cored into ground and buried like curse. Buried and awakened by fools with flamethrowers and paperwork.

Something ancient in the guts of hotel woke.

Upstairs Elena and Seven scrabbled entropy into sloppy geometry. Brute-forced progress with fists and saved children one step at a time. Steelworkers spat curses through clenched teeth, experts eyeing angles and reworking plans when strategy gave way to improvise. None of them knew what lied beneath street level but he sold them hope through gritted teeth and shattered concrete.

Sidestepped gaze of whatever squirmed under hotel floors, hands burrowing deeper into chalk and bone until all that remained above him was buried fury. Rootfiber solidified into brick beneath knees. Crawled forward painstakingly slow until tunnel he navigated dipped underneath knot itself. Five-hundred year old hands had burrowed through bedrock and chiseled hole through absolutes of architecture and root membrane.

Impossible latticework of cable drilled into planet’s brow. Buried that far and System did not owe him courtesy. Ten heartbeats after head breached grate and he was staring into something that hadn’t blinked awake in a hundred years. Root-boomed knees against boots then recoiled like it remembered him. Plateau of stone crumbled away beneath curls of his palms.

Fingertips connected with bedrock. Hard cable stabbed through rock like a bruise fresh from injury.

There.

Gap in stone door blew open with assisted inertia. Shoulder grinded bone onto floor as he shoved away rocks to kneel. Skin stained with flecks of legalite dragged across palms. Towering obelisks of law that hummed angrily like flies whenever he breathed.

The grate above sighed deep breaths Austin swore it hadn’t taken in centuries. Walls grating on walls behind him while he settled like king onto throne. Eyebrows prickled with advantage of crawling through worlds foundation. Eyes steeled on knot with decades of leechfed copper wire and snipped ethernet cable running behind retinas.

The knot waited.

Footsteps from somewhere up stair. Patrol. Relief shift coming down.

SYSTEM: [ACCESS GRANTED. Root- core: ACTIVE.]

Veil of roots parts around him liked owed ocean. Ceased movement altogether as he slid beneath grasp and palms scraped against rolled up sleeves. Coat-button hole ripped down back when he scrabbled up. Looks like he didn’t climb down through here.

Austin snorts quietly.

Won’t believe that.

Heartboots pound from upstairs.

"YOU FIND ANYTHING DOWN THERE?"

Footsteps have inertia that scatters before reaching him, trapped in shafts and limestone. Austin eyes knot expectantly. Been meaning to ask him that same question.

Not sleeping.

Years on that couch pushing denny. Years down here learning vault. Doors open. Freaked out when they didn’t come back.

Had to sleep somewhere.

Clears throat.

DON’T LOOK DOWN HERE

Austin’s boots slapped stairwell as he sprinted up. Behind him, knot shrugs from view stone scraping stone like tinkling wheelbarrows. Watches her backwards until she’s almost on top of him. Heat. Perspiration. Every exhale surrenders Malrec further into shadow.

"You were down here for hours." Elena shoves bags overflowing report-files into his back as he vaults inside. Pulls him close enough till warm breath rustles curls. Eyes him like what she saw will come to fruition. Like she’s waiting for another absence.

Austin shrugs shoulders.

Doesn’t have to say anything. Knot took care of that.

Smiles at nothing.
