The Hunger Emperor’s partial body staggered across the First Feast ground.

The gap in its chest still glowed where Austin Veyron had devoured the command holding the road-matter together. But the wound did not bleed. It opened into a network of black routes running beneath the crater, each one carrying the names of witnesses the Emperor still hoped to bargain over.

A hundred mouths spoke from its chest.

’GIVE ME ONE ORDER. GIVE ME ONE CROWN. GIVE ME ONE SURRENDER.’

Austin Veyron raised the white root chain.

"No."

The Emperor’s arm came down.

Veyra met it with her blade and was thrown through a field of broken thrones. Rin cut the root joints behind the wrist. Calder sent a resonance shock into the exposed command lines. Maelis and Sarielle burned the black routes that tried to close the gap in the Emperor’s chest.

Sable stood beneath the sky-hand of hunger, her broken crown drawing black light away from the body. Every second she held the source against itself, the roots at her throat grew deeper.

"You have a way to kill it," she said. "Use it."

Austin Veyron looked at the network inside the Emperor.

The seed showed him a clean solution.

[CONSUME PARTIAL BODY.]

[GAIN PRIMARY HUNGER AUTHORITY.]

He could take the whole thing. The battle would end. The routes might survive.

But the partial body was not only hunger. It was held together by stolen witness lines. Consuming it whole would make every one of those lines pass through him.

He would become the new center of the road.

Calder understood. "We break the anchors. Do not take the body."

The Emperor swung again. The impact shattered the ground between them and opened a trench toward the portable ledger route. The mouths began naming witnesses one by one.

"Marcus."

"Elena."

"Lia."

"Mara."

Every name made the white line tremble.

The route teams answered from across the field.

"We are here."

The mouths repeated more names.

The witnesses answered again.

The Hunger Emperor had built its power on people believing their names could be used against them. The common ledger turned each spoken name into a confirmation that someone still stood with it.

Austin Veyron ran for the first anchor beneath the Emperor’s left arm.

Rin cleared the path. Veyra held the arm away from the crater. Calder cracked the anchor’s command shell.

Austin Veyron placed his hand on the black root.

He did not devour its power.

He devoured the order that made it believe it was allowed to own a name.

The anchor shattered.

The Emperor’s left arm fell apart into roads that no longer knew where to lead.

The partial body screamed.

Three anchors remained.

The second anchor sat beneath the Emperor’s shoulder, protected by a wall of feeder remnants. They poured from the black roads in waves, each one carrying the face of a witness whose name had been spoken by the mouths.

Veyra hit the first wave head-on. Rin crossed the wall’s surface and cut the feeding threads from above. Maelis burned holes through the packed bodies without touching the white witness lines trapped inside. Sarielle kept the scribes behind a silver barrier as the Emperor tried to drag the portable root into the crater.

Calder reached the second anchor and stopped.

His contestant mark was responding to the root. The Hunger Emperor had hidden an offer inside it.

’ACCEPT HUNGER AUTHORITY. SAVE THE WITNESS LINE.’

Calder looked at the white root shaking beneath the pressure. For an instant, Austin Veyron saw the old prison crown in his face.

Then Calder called through the line, "I witness my own choice."

He placed his hand on the anchor and broke the command rather than accepting its authority.

The second anchor burst.

The Emperor’s shoulder collapsed, dropping a rain of black road fragments across the field.

The third anchor lay behind the creature’s ribbed chest, guarded by Sable’s crown source. The Emperor was using her body as a final lock.

Sable screamed as the black roots pulled her toward the anchor.

"Do not cut it," she said. "It will take the crown with it."

Vharra reached her first. "Then we make the crown choose."

Sable looked at the root line running from her throat to the Emperor’s chest. The source had always claimed it owned her. Now, with every witness watching, she made the choice the Emperor never expected.

"I give it back," she said. "Not to you. To no one."

She tore the crown remnant free.

Black light exploded across the Feast ground. The third anchor opened.

Austin Veyron and Calder reached it together. Separate hands. Separate choices. One target.

They devoured the command that made the Emperor’s partial body a god.

The final anchor broke.

The Hunger Emperor’s form came apart in a storm of dead roads and screaming mouths. Its black mass fled north through the remnants of the Feast route, abandoning the crater rather than being consumed.

The sky-hand vanished.

For the first time, the witnesses could breathe.

Then Nahlia’s voice came through the ledger, urgent and frightened.

"The Emperor is moving toward Grand Meridian. Not with a body—with the First Feast road itself."

The battle had been won.

The city was now the target.

The Feast ground did not collapse when the Emperor fled. It began shedding black roads like a wounded animal. Each road fragment pointed south toward Grand Meridian, trying to reconnect with the routes the Emperor had studied through every earlier trial.

The portable ledger lit with emergency messages.

Marcus reported that the city’s outer root lines were already darkening. Elena was moving civilians from the river district into the central shelter routes. The hospital had begun preparing for a surge of hunger-marked refugees. The Freehold had survived sieges before, but never an enemy that could travel as the road beneath their feet.

Austin Veyron looked at the exhausted expedition. Veyra was wounded. The scribes had nearly drained their portable root. Lia and Mara had carried witness lines through a god’s ritual. Sable stood without her crown, shaking but free of the immediate command for the first time in years.

They all needed rest.

Grand Meridian did not have time.

"We take the fastest route home," Austin Veyron said.

Calder checked the map. "The Emperor will expect that. The First Feast road is now the fastest route—and the most dangerous."

"It is also the route it is using," Austin Veyron replied. "If we let it reach the city without us, we fight blind."

Sable watched the black road fragments pulling south. "The Emperor lost its partial body, but it did not lose its hunger. It will try to rebuild through your city’s routes."

Vharra placed a hand on her shoulder. "Then you help us stop it."

Sable did not promise redemption. She only nodded.

The expedition formed a return column around the portable ledger root. The witnesses at the Feast ground began sending their own choices south, strengthening the white lines that still led home.

Behind them, the broken crater closed over the shattered throne.

Ahead, Grand Meridian waited under a sky that had begun to turn the color of black roads.

The First Feast had failed to choose a successor.

So the Hunger Emperor had chosen a battlefield instead.
