Vorth stalked like he owned every tile. Chains clicked along floors, a rhythm only few dared continue walking into the dark teeth of. He paused at lobby center and blinked at the charred banner, stitches across palisade skin, knotted roots silent beneath stairwell.
"You taught rocks to listen," he said flatly. "Made vines cultured. Admirable."
Austin held ground until space between them solidified. Seven and Elena flanked him—combat hunched in Seven’s spine, endless industry pulsed from Elena. Behind them Austin imagined the bastion took a breath; palisade thrummed with Chain Resonance while something quiet, Voice-like hummed at Austin’s chest.
"What do you want, Vorth?" he asked. Anger folded seamlessly into speech; people heard things differently when asked than yelled.
Vorth smiled like brackets around an insult. "I don’t want." Hand rose and ring of chain-links unfurled from wrist. Words inked across their teeth, microscopic print slithering across lobby floor in search of handholds. Tiles drank greedily.
Words warped the air—inked ownership. Words prickled behind Austin’s eyes, complimenting Chain Resonance webbed into skin. Vorth’s tone dropped another register and his words gained teeth. "Below you," he began, "sleeps a core. Old registry lines." Chain finger jabbed at stairwell. "Malrec’s claim isn’t solely against people, against field. Dig down far enough and we own what feeds your home. I came to give you choice: steward, ledger-signing, productivity. Keep people clean. Legal." Head tilted when words finished lingering. "Refuse and I simply take the core." Pause to let words sink. "And with core I take the Meridian."
Elena bit her jaw. "There’s some things we won’t let you buy," she stated.
"People are numbers," said Vorth and words coiled Chains like sleeping dragons. "Numbers recorded on ledgers. Ownership is purity."
He began humming and the lobby echoed back. Ledger-written words slithered down balustrade and down chandelier-shadow to slither down stairwell where hotel’s deepest core writhed—dark hungry thing Austin had dreamed of waking up to. Contract words survive by rules and shape; they tether will against truth. Vorth’s voice pulled lobby floor up to registry-lines keeping twitch until tether found handhold on Meridian’s heart.
Austin called Chain Resonance as answer. Teeth buried into wood now—conceptual claws understanding past vendors to reasons why the ownership-threads sought anything at all to call home. Malrec’s words tasted of dust and calculus; ledgers penned obedience and contracts cut into bone. If he let that tether hold...
Meridian could become property. Men could be swayed against their contracts; law inked into dirt was not so easily removed.
"You can’t cage a core." Austin said evenly. "That’s seizure. Not business."
Semantics," Vorth replied. Hung a chain-loop at hip and it thrummed contract: registry numbers and district-packages and dozens of infinitesimal purchases. "Contracts are what those above call law." Chain whip of words cut the air and sloughed across floor. "Bind strong enough root and you cage what grows upon it. Tax homesteads. Tax stewardship. Property; salvation." Synonyms.
Seven shifted. Consequence collected in spine and made muscle. Balled fist up weak and white-boned and brutally intent on denting Vorth’s cheek. Eyes rolled warning and Vorth’s ledger-whispers sloughed carpet-like from shoulders. Strike stutter-stepped, snagged half way by chainsin-air; wrists locked into punch but found resistence that wasn’t metal. Seven went through.
"What about contract buy backs?" Elena asked.
"Those," said Vorth bluntly, "Are sanctioned by ownership." Chain whip yanked across lobby tiles and curled words notched across knife-edge where it halted. Words grabbed at air. Seven inhaled against tide of contract.
"Contracts," he said softly. "Are tools. Punch a tool and your hand snags.".
Austin felt it too. No physical tether but suggestion of Belt aimed at warping Seven’s intent into consent. Fight fogged and Austin’s hand rose. Chain Resonance bloomed across palms and it was strand of sympathy down ledger-vein. He could rip harness off pity freely, tear sentence whole. Could swallow tether into himself—consume words whole—and when he was finished both contract and Malrec would die in his stomach be his and his alone.
The God System illuminated behind eyelids.
System: [Active Target: External Contract Invocation. Option: Devour. Gain: Chain Authority (Major). Cost: Assimilation +1.2%. Alert: Local registry flag raised.]
Hands froze midair. Had fed before—courtyard—and costed him arm and laughter. Numbers chewed on whimpering dread at his ankles; parasites Austin domesticated now part of him. Feed granted him near instant superiority over claim, over anyone Malrec might tether cuffs to in their organization. But price crawled coolly down skin like judgment.
Vorth pulled harder against words becoming skin. "Make up your mind, boy."
Elena laced fingers across Austin’s forearm. Biological emphasis. "Don’t let them change you." Oil and dissent mixed on her exhale. Elena couldn’t say that—true—yet made fear for him visceral. Austin saw future stained like cracks running down every human heart.
Austin remained silent. Instead he invoked second gift: Else Clause. Not consumption but severance. Ledgers made him feel breakable beneath Vorth’s possessive grammar. Funneled sentience down contract-vein and pulled. Words built upon intent; intent fragile and given enough wrenching could come undone. Focused enough on where claim threaded he could tug name loose from puppetstring—steal grammar from subject instead of gulping them whole.
He yanked.
Ink across ledger skin shuddered. Vorth’s smile twisted neatly off-kilter. Belt slackened across Seven’s shoulders and strike punched through nothing useful; hurricane through brick. Lobby held still.
Then Vorth laughed. Quiet. Proud. "Clever. But cutting doesn’t mean you don’t bleed. You stain everything you touch."
Fingers cracked and ledger-skin buckled like shed muscle. Stairwell swung lock-noise rubbed into carpet—Malrec had buried claim deep. Hotel sighed around feet, sentient rootmind Austin punched into tendriling against him like chest beneath down. Files decaying registry older than building itself and smelling of verdict rose to Vorth’s wrist to coil around it like corpses enamored.
Austin heard rock groan beneath boots—knowing—from wildness afraid. And then soldered over by root shout.
God System flashed aggressive.
System: [Contract Thread: Severed. Re-threading : In Progress. Threat Assessment: Core Claim Breach.]
Vorth’s pupils were glacier blue. "Cutting syntax doesn’t make consequence go away." Dangerous tilt of smile. "Know something boy? That core remembers being claimed deep enough you weren’t even soil." He flexed wrist and Chain blossomed apart between fingers, obsidian words rooting across like spilled beans. "There’s ledgers calling out older than you grammar. Believe me it will answer a contract read to it."
Austin’s Chain thrummed low agreement. Could still feed—pull tether deep into self until manbled dry— but something about Vorth stayed teeth bared, unfamiliar. Gut pulsed hollow somewhere in chest. Had Austin only invoked claim on Meridian. Had his Apocalypse gift simply skimmed contract-depth Austin hadn’t have access to...
Chain dug through atmosphere and words blossoming across knuckles fattened, ancient syntax coagulating dark as waste-water.
Austin tasted blood.
God spoke, digital voice fractured towards hysteria.
Words that echoed butchered the silence across lobby, crisp as knife.
System: [WARNING. CONTRACT ANALYSIS — FILE: CORE-LOCK (BLACKLISTED). Severity: Critical. Direct Threat: Terraformation Collapse.]
Heads turned. Meridian took a collective breath—creature suddenly conscious of parasite stuffed down gullet. Vorth’s smile split.
Floor fell from beneath Austin’s feet.
