The silver thread tightened.
Austin Veyron felt it in his chest before he saw anything change in the challenge ground. The line running from Malrec’s core to Sarielle’s heart had become hot enough to hurt. Every pulse carried a distant echo: iron bars shaking, a woman’s breath catching, a tracker burning beside a living heart.
Malrec smiled at the distraction.
"Feel that?" he asked. "She is learning how expensive your principles are."
Austin Veyron kept one claw buried in the broken shell around the lord’s chain-core. His other hand pressed against his own chest, holding the stolen authority fragment steady.
The silver thread gave another pulse.
A vision opened.
Sarielle was in the cage wagon with both hands clamped over her sternum. She was older than Kaela, broader through the shoulders, her hair a darker gold. Silver light leaked between her fingers. Around her, Malrec’s war camp had started moving faster, wagons turning toward a ravine road while handlers shouted for space.
The tracker would kill her when Malrec’s core gave out.
Or sooner, if he decided Austin Veyron was too close to winning.
[Remote contract trigger unstable.]
[Target life-sign decreasing.]
[Available action: assume command ownership.]
Austin Veyron rejected the prompt.
Malrec’s eyes narrowed. "Why refuse? Take the line. Make the heir yours. You could stop the pain with one claim."
"I don’t need to own her to save her."
"Then you will fail."
The lord tore himself away from Austin Veyron’s claws, sacrificing a strip of chain armor to do it. Green blood streamed down his torso. He hit Austin Veyron with an elbow hard enough to split the root armor at his jaw, then drove a knee into Austin Veyron’s stomach.
Austin Veyron staggered. The silver thread flashed, and Sarielle gasped inside the distant cage.
Malrec was using the fight itself to shake the tracker loose.
Austin Veyron’s hunger screamed for a simpler answer. Devour the core. Take the registry. Take every command at once and force the tracker to stop.
But the command line was not only a weapon. It was a map.
Austin Veyron followed it.
Contract sense reached across the miles through the silver light. He ignored the detonation words, the ownership clauses, the layers of Malrec’s signature. Beneath them was a small mechanical rhythm: location, distance, life-sign, trigger state.
A beacon.
The tracker knew exactly where Sarielle was because it had to tell Malrec where to find the heart he planned to threaten.
Austin Veyron smiled despite the blood in his mouth.
Malrec saw it and frowned. "What did you find?"
"A way to make you regret being organized."
The demon lord came at him again.
Austin Veyron accepted the hit this time. Malrec’s chain-armored fist drove into his shoulder, cracking bone. Austin Veyron caught the wrist before the lord could withdraw. Territorial Defiance flared through the contact.
[Command path detected: HIDE TARGET.]
[Authority fragment sufficient to contest.]
Austin Veyron pushed his stolen authority into the silver thread.
Not ownership.
Refusal.
He rejected the hidden part of the command. The part that told the tracker to speak only to Malrec.
The challenge ground exploded with silver light.
Outside the seal, every demon watching saw a line shoot from Austin Veyron’s chest toward the distant southeast. It pierced the ash clouds like a spear of moonlight and remained there, steady and impossible to ignore.
The System responded.
[Remote tracker reclassified: OPEN BEACON.]
[Target location revealed to all parties.]
[Distance: 18.4 miles southeast.]
[Target condition: critical but recoverable.]
The crowd outside the circle erupted.
Malrec’s face went still.
"You idiot," he whispered.
Austin Veyron released the lord’s wrist. "Your war camp is not hidden anymore."
The silver beacon continued to burn across the sky. Somewhere in the distance, Austin Veyron felt Sarielle’s pain lessen as the lethal trigger converted into a location pulse. Not harmless. Not safe. But no longer counting down to an explosion.
Malrec’s remaining soldiers would see it. Every scavenger lord in the district would see it. Anyone with a grudge, a rescue team, or a hunger for a weakened war camp would know exactly where the Beast-Queen heir was held.
The demon lord’s control was bleeding away in public.
Malrec attacked with no warning.
This time there was no calculation in it. Only rage.
His chains slammed Austin Veyron into the ground. One wrapped around Austin Veyron’s throat. Another drilled through his thigh. The lord pressed a boot against Austin Veyron’s chest and leaned down, green fire pouring from his eyes.
"You think exposure is victory?" Malrec snarled. "You have announced a prize to every predator in the territory. If I cannot hold her, someone else will tear her apart trying."
Austin Veyron’s vision narrowed.
The words landed because they might be true.
He had exposed Sarielle’s location. He had changed a private execution device into an open signal. That created a path for rescue—but also a path for every monster with an army.
A scumbag’s choice. Save her from one cage by placing her in reach of many.
Austin Veyron tasted blood and ash.
Then he looked through the silver beacon again.
Kaela had seen it too.
Not through magic. Through the war camp’s own panic. Austin Veyron saw a fragment of the distant field: Kaela, outside the challenge boundary with Rin and three freed huntresses, staring southeast. Elena was beside her, already giving orders. Seven had turned toward the Grand Meridian garage, where armored roots were pulling apart the remains of a delivery truck.
They were not waiting for him to decide every move.
They were choosing to go.
Austin Veyron grinned under Malrec’s boot.
"You’re still wrong about people," he said.
Malrec pressed harder. "Die with your lesson."
Austin Veyron opened DEVOUR around the chain at his throat.
He did not take the command. He took the pressure behind it and fed it back through the lord’s damaged core.
The chain reversed.
Malrec jerked as green fire bit into his own chest. Austin Veyron rolled free, tore the link from his thigh, and came up inside the lord’s reach. He drove both claws into Malrec’s wounded shoulder and forced him backward across the black stone.
The silver beacon burned above them.
Far away, engines started. The sound was too distant for ordinary ears, but Austin Veyron felt it through the beacon’s open thread: the Grand Meridian truck tearing south, Kaela shouting directions, Rin’s laughter when the first war-camp outrider realized it had become prey. Elena’s voice cut through the movement, sharp and steady, ordering the freed prisoners to choose whether to come or stay behind under Seven’s protection. No one waited for Austin Veyron’s permission. The realization left him proud, relieved, and strangely exposed. A lord would have demanded control of every decision. Austin Veyron had built something messier: people who could act while he was trapped inside a ring with the monster who had taught him why freedom mattered in the first place at all together.
[Rescue path established.]
[Sarielle: 18.4 miles southeast.]
[Core Claim remains active.]
Malrec looked past Austin Veyron toward the beacon, and for the first time, fear showed clearly in his eyes.
Austin Veyron followed his gaze.
"Your camp is about to learn what it feels like," he said, "when someone comes for what you thought you owned."
