Malrec learned of linked damage by cutting himself.
The demon lord dragged one claw across his forearm. Green blood traced jagged lines across the black stone.
Miles away, Sarielle screamed.
Austin Veyron felt it through the silver line at the same moment Kaela did. The Beast-Queen heir slumped against bars of her cage, one hand curled tight around the burning tracker beneath her sternum. The split beacon tower above the war camp stuttered like a candle in a draft.
"You see?" Malrec said. He grinned through obvious pain. "Your clever little countermeasure made her my shield."
Austin Veyron’ claws flexed.
The hunger wanted nothing else. Tear out the core. Tear it all out and consume. End Malrec before he had the chance to cut again.
But the silver thread between them clenched around Sarielle’ heartbeat. Kill the lord wrong and she died with him.
[Linked damage confirmed.]
[Target: Sarielle.]
[Lethal threshold unknown.]
Malrec slashed his arm again.
Sarielle screamed.
Austin Veyron covered the distance to the ring in two long strides and slammed the demon lord into the ground. Root armor bloomed across his forearm as he pinioned Malrec’ wrist to the stone.
"You do that again," Austin Veyron said, voice low, "and I break every finger before you reach the next blade."
Malrec laughed through clenched teeth. "You will keep me alive now. How noble of you."
"It’s not noble." Austin Veyron pressed until bone shifted. "It’s inconvenient."
The lord chuckled then twisted to a rasp.
At the war camp, Kaela reached the cage.
She had sliced down two handlers on the way through. Rin blocked the wagon entrance with bloodied tails while Seven braced against the gate through a swell of panicked camp soldiers. Elena knelt beside Sarielle with a medical bag cracked across the dirt.
The tracker thrummed beneath Sarielle’ skin like an alien heart.
"Can you get it out?" Kaela asked.
Elena shook her head. "Not by cutting. It’ bound to the heart with living contract fibers."
Sarielle cracked one eye open. "Then leave me."
Kaela pressed her palm against the bars. "No."
"If Malrec can hurt me anytime he wants, he will use me to manipulate Austin Veyron."
"He tried." Elena studied the silver threads with a tiny light. "The bond is reciprocal now. Means it has something anchoring it."
"The core." Kaela said.
"Austin Veyron," Elena said through the thread, "listen to me."
She tilted her head at the beacon. "The tracker hooks into Malrec’ chain-core via a living contract. You can’ destroy the core. You have to remove it whole or the bond detonates through Sarielle."
Malrec listened.
His features split further.
"You cannot physically remove a living core intact," he spat across the distance. "Not from me."
Austin Veyron stared at the green pulse beneath the lord’ ribs.
The solution was obvious. Logic said it couldn’t work. Common sense refused to entertain the idea.
He would have to DEVOUR without consuming. Tear open the core, neutralize its authority, remove the contract anchor in pieces before Malrec’ body died of exposure. Austin Veyron had never attempted such a thing. Never been given the option. To succeed would be miraculous; failure would butcher Sarielle.
The hunger whispered it could happen.
Austin Veyron did not trust the hunger.
He trusted the people fighting while his back was turned.
"Kaela," he said, voice level. "Get Sarielle out of the cage. Don’ sever the tracker. Elena, keep her conscious. Rin, hold the camp."
Kaela’s jaw clenched. "You? Where’ you going?"
"To steal a heart."
Malrec’s chains burst free of stone.
Austin Veyron had seen it coming. Telegraphed his next move too far. One chain snagged his injured shoulder. Another hooked over his ankle. The lord took the opening to close the distance and drive a knee into Austin Veyron’ ribs.
Agony flared through his nerve endings.
Sarielle jerked against the cage bars.
Austin Veyron went still.
"This is your fault," Malrec gritted through teeth.
"Yours too." Pain pooled deep within him and twisted. "Every time you attack me she-"
"You make that choice," Malrec snarled. He seized the other wrist and slammed Austin Veyron down.
"Don’ tell me what to do."
"You are." Malrec grabbed at the core directly beneath Austin Veyron’ fingertips. "See this?" His voice rose an octave, cruel. "Linked damage. Every wound you take...I feel them in her too. Why did you think you could link yourselves to me?"
Kill him now and Sarielle dies. Save her now and Malrec breaks them further.
"Austin Veyron," Elena said through silver, "focus."
He ignored her.
Shift your strategy. The pain blossomed too strong to hold much longer either way.
Austin Veyron changed his fight.
Instead of trying to harm the lord, he looked for weakness.
Allowed himself to be pulled in by the chain around his shoulder, then pressed one palm against Malrec’ exposed core-shell. DEVOUR flickered beneath his fingertips.
Not a mouth.
Not fangs.
Hands.
Hands that could peel back every ugly layer of the lord’ chains and leave nothing behind.
He felt the chain-cores layers: owner authority, registry info, fear, command, and beneath that the silver wire linking Malrec to Sarielle. Beneath all that beat Malrec’ true heart. A wicked little pulse Austin Veyron had grown intimately familiar with over the last hour.
He peeled the layers apart carefully.
Malrec’s eyes shifted.
"What do you think you’ doing?"
"Learning." Another layer free and the link to Sarielle weakened. "Teach me."
Austin Veyron slid one layer from the core bare: -PAIN TRANSFER.-
Malrec cursed loudly as the silver link sparked.
At the war camp, Sarielle’ chest stopped heaving.
Elena stared at the tracker. "You did it. He sliced through one layer."
Kaela watched the beacon, pinned by hope and terror.
Malrec thrashed, but Austin Veyron had firm control of the core now. The hunger inside him screamed to take everything before Malrec could react. The splinter of lord authority trapped in his belly thrummed in response.
Act like tuning fork.
Austin ignored both sensations.
Slipped another layer from Malrec’ core clean: -DETONATE ON CORE LOSS.-
Silver went dark.
Malrec’ chains bucked across the ring. The lord swept one claw at Austin Veyron’ throat but Austin held fast against the wrist and kept him there.
"You can’ keep doing this." Malrec gritted through clenched teeth. "It’ one thing after another until you destroy me."
Austin Veyron met his eyes. "Good."
By the truck, the war camp was breaking apart. Handlers had dropped weapons. Whole squads were running from opened cages. The camp’ freed prisoners were hacking at restrains while others loaded Sarielle into the truck bed and Seven kept the path open.
Elena placed her fingers on Sarielle’ neck. "She’ stable. But we need the last anchor severed before we go."
Austin Veyron traced the last silver wire binding Malrec to Sarielle along his palm.
It’ not a command.
It’ ownership.
The claim Malrec wrote into Sarielle blood when she stopped being a person and became something more. An asset to his army. One of his tools.
Austin breathed once, slow and steady.
Then grasped the wire with both hands and denied it.
Territorial Defiance flared until it lit the sealed ring aglow white light.
[Claim contested.]
[Authority holder lacks consent.]
[Claim denied.]
So bright the tracker around Sarielle’ neck went dark.
The silver line severed with a pop.
Sarielle screamed once more at the war camp then went silent.
Kaela stumbled.
Elena crouched to the ground.
Silence fell. Complete and awful until Sarielle inhaled again.
The camp erupted. Kaela fell against the cage mouth, laughing and crying simultaneously while Sarielle tugged her free of the broken bars to cling. Elena checked the heirs pulse twice before throwing a fierce thumbs up at the beacon tower. Rin gutted the final handler who reached for the truck and shouted at everyone to move now before whoever led the camp decided they had something better to unite behind.
Malrec stared at the wound where the silver line had been.
Austin Veyron felt the demon lord’ core beneath his fingertips raw and vulnerable at last.
Safe.
The System presented him with confirmation:
[Remote contract severed.]
[Target Sarielle liberated.]
[Core Claim condition updated: opposing authority vulnerable.]
Austin tightened his hold then crushed the shell clean off Malrec’ forearm.
Malrec understood then. Real, unfettered fear flashed across his broken face for the first time.
