The sanctuary refused to let Austin Veyron leave alone.

By morning, the bell invitation had been copied onto three sheets of paper and argued over by everyone who could read it. The road east was not a road on any surviving map. It was a sovereign path: a stretch of ruined territory that belonged to Lady Vharra because every demon lord nearby had agreed to treat it as hers.

Austin Veyron stood in the sanctuary courtyard while the delegation formed by choice.

Elena joined as the relief coordinator. Sarielle joined because the invitation threatened people of her bloodline. Rin claimed she was coming because Vharra’s scouts "looked huntable." Seven joined because someone needed to keep the route records. Kaela took command of the sanctuary volunteers who chose to provide a shadow escort.

No one had to explain why they were staying behind. The ward still needed people. The children still needed food. Grand Meridian still needed defenders.

Austin Veyron carried the fragment cage in a pack across his back.

The black mark on his wrist burned whenever they faced east.

They crossed the sanctuary gate at noon.

The sovereign road began three miles later, marked by a line of broken statues. Every statue had its face chiseled away and a ledger nailed to its chest. The pages listed the same sentence in different languages.

[ENTRY REQUIRES RECOGNITION OF AUTHORITY.]

Rin read it and spat on the road.

The nearest statue turned its empty face toward her.

A chain snapped from the ledger.

Kaela struck it aside with her spear. The chain cut a groove through the stone and tried to wrap around her ankle. Austin Veyron caught it with Root-Graft and tore it loose.

The road answered with a low sound like a bell struck underwater.

Three demon scouts stepped from the ruined buildings ahead. They wore scaled armor and carried hooked bows. Their leader had antlers wrapped in black wire.

"Border travelers," she said. "State your lord."

"No lord," Austin Veyron replied.

The scouts laughed.

"You stand on Vharra’s road," the leader said. "Everyone has a lord here."

Sarielle stepped forward. "Then write this down. We do not."

The antlered demon’s smile faded. "You are a Beast-Queen heir."

"I am Sarielle."

The scouts raised their bows.

Austin Veyron felt the hunger rise. Their cores were stronger than the wraiths. He could devour one, perhaps two, and gain enough force to break the border marker by brute strength.

The thought came fast. Clean. Useful.

He hated how natural it felt.

"Elena," he said quietly, "the road is about to fight us."

"I know."

The first arrow came for Sarielle.

Seven caught it. Rin vanished into the rubble and reappeared behind the second scout, driving her shoulder into the demon’s spine. Kaela met the leader head-on, spear against hooked blade. Austin Veyron moved for the third archer, roots tearing through the road as he closed the distance.

The scout fired twice. One arrow cut his shoulder. The other carried a strip of black paper that tried to attach itself to his skin.

[Border debt offered: obedience for safe passage.]

Austin Veyron burned the paper with DEVOUR.

The scout’s eyes widened. "You eat contracts?"

"I am learning."

He broke her bow and sent her tumbling into the dust. He did not kill her.

That surprised everyone, including himself.

The antlered leader drove Kaela back toward the statues. Her hooked blade caught Kaela’s spear shaft and snapped it in half. Before she could strike again, Sarielle’s silver blade cut the black wire around her antlers.

The leader screamed.

The road beneath them cracked.

Every ledger statue turned toward Austin Veyron.

A new message appeared on the pages.

[BLOOD OATH ACCEPTED. DEVOURING ACT ACCEPTED. CHOOSE ENTRY.]

The scouts froze.

"The road requires payment," the leader said through clenched teeth. "Blood from a traveler, or the devouring of one who challenges passage."

Rin looked at the bound scouts. "That seems designed for you."

Austin Veyron stared at the message.

The easy choice was obvious. Kill a scout. Devour the core. Gain power. Enter the road.

Vharra had made the border to reward exactly that instinct.

Elena touched his unmarked wrist. "There has to be another reading."

Seven scanned the statues. "Statement contains two acceptable conditions. It does not specify whose blood or what is devoured."

Sarielle looked at Austin Veyron’s torn shoulder. "Your blood is already on the road."

Austin Veyron shook his head. "That makes it my oath. I am not taking this road for everyone."

The sanctuary volunteers spoke among themselves. Kaela pressed the broken end of her spear into the road and said, "We chose to come."

One by one, the delegation stepped forward.

They each gave a drop of blood to the stone.

Not to Vharra. Not as obedience.

To record that they entered together by choice.

The road shuddered.

The black message flickered.

[AUTHORITY UNRECOGNIZED. ENTRY... CONDITIONAL.]

Austin Veyron took the fragment cage from his back and held it over the nearest ledger.

"I will give you a devouring act," he said. "But not a person."

He opened DEVOUR and consumed the debt written across the border stone.

The taste was ancient and poisonous. It carried every traveler who had bled or killed to pass this point. Austin Veyron nearly choked on it.

The ledger statues split down the middle.

The road opened.

Beyond the broken border, the eastern sky had gone black.

A city of glass towers stood on the horizon, surrounded by thousands of hanging chains.

Lady Vharra’s territory.

The delegation stood at the broken border for a moment, listening to the road breathe behind them. The scouts Austin Veyron had spared watched from the far side of the statues. Their leader held her severed antler wire in one hand and looked at the open path with an expression Austin Veyron could not read.

"You broke the toll," she said.

"No," Austin Veyron answered. "I refused its terms."

"That is not different on this road."

"It will be."

Rin leaned close to Austin Veyron. "You are collecting enemies now?"

"I am collecting witnesses," he said.

The antlered scout gave a short, humorless laugh. "Vharra will have collectors waiting before the first tower. They will not care what you call yourselves."

"Then they can hear us call ourselves free while we break their teeth," Kaela said.

Elena checked the delegation for injuries and looked at the black city on the horizon. "We do not have enough supplies for a siege. We need information, shelter, and a way out if the meeting is a trap."

Seven angled his head toward the towers. "Detected: thirty-seven active chain signals. Most are fixed. Four are moving toward us."

Sarielle tightened her grip on her silver blade. "Scouts?"

"No. Larger."

The mark on Austin Veyron’s wrist burned hard enough to make him drop to one knee.

Her voice entered his mind.

"You found the road, devourer. Now decide what you are willing to become to finish it."

Ahead, four shapes separated from the hanging chains of the nearest tower and began walking down the road toward them.

The delegation raised weapons, but Austin Veyron kept his eyes on the city. The sovereign road had accepted them. That did not mean it intended to let them survive the welcome.
