The glass train did not ask where they wanted to go.
Austin Veyron pressed his bleeding palm against the black window and thought of Grand Meridian. The network mark on his wrist flared. The train screamed down a route that did not exist on any map.
"Twelve minutes," Elena said, watching the red numbers crawl across the radio display. "Maybe less."
Veyra sat across from her, pale from the engine rescue but awake. Tessa and Orena held the Cinder Gate map between them, already marking which defenders could return later. No one spoke about turning the train around. The claim window had made the choice for them.
At Grand Meridian, Maelis stood inside the old ballroom with both hands raised.
The Freehold roots beneath the floor had gone black.
They rose through the carpet like wet ropes, knocking over chairs and wrapping around the support pillars. Every time Maelis burned one with ember fire, two more pushed out from the basement doors.
"Elena," she said into the radio, "the chain is using the old service tunnels. It knows the building. It is looking for a central anchor."
"Keep it from the lobby," Elena said. "We are almost there."
A root burst through the ballroom floor and wrapped around Maelis’ ankle.
She burned it away, but the black chain left a mark on her boot.
Seven’ s remote perimeter protocol flashed across the walls in white light. The outer root wall held, but the enemy was already inside.
The glass train arrived under Grand Meridian’ s ruined rail platform with a sound like thunder.
Austin Veyron jumped off before the doors fully opened.
The station was dark. Black roots had swallowed the tracks and claim symbols pulsed along the walls. The network had turned the familiar tunnels into a throat.
"Service stairs," Veyra said. "If the chain reached the hotel foundation, it will take the shortest route to the old engine room."
They ran.
Rin led through the darkness, cutting roots before they could close around their ankles. Kaela and Orena guarded the rear. Seven’ s white light exposed chain markings under the old tile. Every few yards, the claim network whispered Austin Veyron’ s name.
"HOST. ROOT. THRONE."
The hunger reacted to the word throne.
Austin Veyron kept moving.
At the top of the service stairs, the first familiar face waited for them.
It was Marcus, the former hotel mechanic who had helped reinforce the west wing after the first siege. He stood in the corridor with black roots wrapped around his arms and throat. His eyes were open, but ink had covered the whites.
"Elena," he said gently. "You came back."
She stopped.
"Marcus," she whispered.
The chain inside him smiled.
"Grand Meridian needs a keeper," it said. "Austin Veyron has already done the work. Let him claim the roots. Let him protect everyone forever."
Austin Veyron felt the network reach for him through Marcus.
[Accept Freehold Throne.]
[All roots become subject to user will.]
The corridor shook.
Take the throne. Command the roots. Save Marcus. Seal the tunnels. Protect the hotel.
Every person inside the Freehold would become part of his system.
Elena looked at Austin Veyron. "Can you get him out?"
"Not if I take the easy answer."
Marcus’ body lunged.
Rin threw a knife, pinning his sleeve to the wall without touching skin. Kaela caught the chain roots around his legs. Veyra and Sarielle cut the outer coils with silver and ember fire.
Austin Veyron stepped close enough to see the fear behind Marcus’ ink-black eyes.
"I am sorry," Marcus mouthed.
"You do not have to be."
Austin Veyron opened DEVOUR around the claim thread entering Marcus’ chest.
The network fought back. It showed him the Freehold roof collapsing, children trapped in the lobby, Elena calling his name. It showed him what would happen if he refused the throne.
Austin Veyron swallowed the lie instead.
The black thread tore free.
Marcus collapsed into Elena’ s arms, coughing up ash.
The corridor lights flickered.
From below, the foundation chain roared.
Maelis’ voice came through the radio. "The engine room. Now. The network has found the root heart."
The team ran deeper into the hotel.
At the last basement door, Austin Veyron saw the claim network’ s true shape: a black root tree growing through the old engine room, its branches wrapped around the Freehold’ s living roots. At its center was a dark seat made of chain and wood.
The Freehold Throne.
The network had not just found a host. It had built one for him.
The room went still around the throne.
The black tree’ s branches pulsed in time with Austin Veyron’ s heartbeat. Every root in the hotel answered: the lobby barricades, the kitchen vines, the courtyard growth Maelis had nurtured for months. The Freehold was not just under attack. It was being translated into a command system.
The seat spoke in Austin Veyron’ s own voice.
"SIT. PROTECT THEM."
Elena stepped between him and the throne. "Do not."
A root snapped from the floor and wrapped around her ankle. Austin Veyron cut it with Root-Graft before it could pull her closer.
The throne offered another image: Grand Meridian’ s residents gathered safely behind unbreakable walls, every threat held outside, every decision made quickly by one person who could see all the roots at once.
It was not a lie.
That made it dangerous.
"Can we burn it?" Kaela asked.
Maelis arrived through the service door, ember fire dancing between her fingers. She looked at the black tree and shook her head. "Not without burning the living roots tied through it. The claim has braided itself into the Freehold."
Veyra studied the branches. "Then the throne is not the heart. It is an interface. We break the network’ s right to speak through it."
Tessa stepped toward the wall of roots. "Like we did at the Court. Separate service from ownership."
The black tree lashed at her. Orena blocked the blow with her spear.
Austin Veyron’ s wrist mark burned with the old offer.
[Accept Freehold Throne.]
[Guarantee local safety.]
He looked at the people around him. Each of them could be safer if he accepted. Each of them could be trapped in his protection forever.
The root heart roared through the room.
The claim window had not closed.
It had only reached its final question.
The answer came from the walls.
Black roots tore free from the engine- room floor and struck at everyone at once. Kaela knocked one aside with her shield. Sarielle set another ablaze with silver fire. Rin slid under a third and cut the claim symbols etched beneath its bark.
"Those symbols!" Tessa shouted. "They are the contracts."
Maelis widened her ember fire into a ring around the root heart, careful not to touch the green living roots buried beneath the black growth. Elena and Orena pulled Marcus toward the service door while Seven braced the ceiling as the engine room shook.
Austin Veyron watched Tessa scrape one contract glyph from the wall. The black branch above it weakened.
"Everybody," he said, "we do not fight the roots. We fight the claim written through them."
The team spread out.
For the first time since the network entered Grand Meridian, the black tree recoiled in absolute fear.
