It raised its pen.
Red ink stained the glass stairwell, blotting toward the expedition’s tapped names. Wherever the ink landed, the archive buzzed with new labels.
SCOUT. ASSET. DEBTOR. PROPERTY.
"Don’t let it finish a sentence," Nahlia said.
Kaela bolted forward. Her shield collided with the paper-face guardian, shredding shelved contracts through sheer momentum. The guardian crumpled on impact then unfolded again with another line of ink stretching across its blank expression.
Rin sliced the pen free from its wrist.
The pen sprouted another tip.
"It’s bound to the registry." Nahlia said. "We need a user-code."
Tessa locked eyes with her. "Yours?"
Nahlia swallowed. "If I open it, the Ledger will know I escaped."
"That’s still your decision."
The Amendment skidded toward them. Sarielle lassoed its wrist with silver flame while Seven braced a shelf from crushing the Cinder Gate scouts behind them. Austin Veyron felt his claim seed hum inside him to read the patterns of ink spilling across its skin, begging for the answers they provided.
He pressed his hand over the mark.
Nahlia stepped up to the registry door.
"I used to be a chain-scribe." She said. "Logged claims because I thought numbers were less threatening than faces. Guess what I learned? They’re both predators. I made a mistake."
Nahlia pressed her pen against the padlock and scribbled her name across it.
The door swung inward.
The Amendment screamed.
Austin Veyron used DEVOUR on the last active sentence in its Claim log. He didn’t extract the guardian’s stapled heart. He extracted the subroutine that commanded it to write.
The guardian folded into loose sheets of paper.
Beyond them, the archive shelves stretched out of sight. Every extracted page held a name, a date, and the moment someone had been claimed.
Tessa recognized the first name.
VEYRA — RESISTANCE ASSET.
Rin found her name beneath hunted lines.
Then Elena stiffened.
At the archive reading table rested a ledger bound by black skin.
Its latest page faced them.
Austin Veyron — DEVOURER CANDIDATE.
Date of entry: three years before Austin Veyron crossed into demon territory.
Silence fell between them.
The claim seed beat beneath his ribs like a second heartbeat.
At the bottom of the page waited Vharra’s shadow-script.
HE WILL COME HUNGRY.
Austin Veyron stared at the sentence carved into the ledger.
The Queen hadn’t waited until he discovered her. She hadn’t simply reacted to his presence. She had been waiting for Austin Veyron.
Lights flickered out across the archive registry.
Books burst open around them. Pages sliced free and flew through the air, white wings before they whipped into knives. Kaela hoisted her shield to guard Elena and Tessa’s backs while Seven dragged a shelf across the floor to block the archive’s earliest advances. Rin disappeared beneath the table before jumping out from behind a bookshelf and slicing pages in half before they could congeal words.
Nahlia snatched the black ledger off of the table. "This archive has executed compromised readers."
"Can we take it?" Veyra asked.
"You can’t pull it out." Not together. "The core functions as a claim-Anchor."
Austin glanced at his prewritten sentence. The seed inside him clawed toward devouring the inked words already printed on it. Promises of answers: why he had been chosen, how the First knew his name, what devourer candidate meant. His future. Other words had appeared on the page Austin hadn’t known were there: Hunger, crown.
He squeezed his fist closed around the pen again.
"Extract what you need," Austin said.
Tessa shredded blank pages from an auxiliary ledger book and began transcribing data. Elena scanned dates while Nahlia cross-referenced chain-scribe markings. Sarielle pushed the door open against an incoming tide of paper blades. Each exchanged information as they worked through the first catalog. Slowly.
The first fact wasn’t Austin Veyron’s codename.
It wasn’t written beside his name at all.
Written beside an outdated network map was their future.
WORLD BREACH PROBABLE. HUMAN HUNGER COMPATIBLE.
Austin Veyron felt ice creep into the pit of his stomach.
The second line only confirmed what they already suspected.
DEVOUR SEED — INSTALLATION WINDOW UNKNOWN.
Veyra read the line again. Voice faraway. "She didn’t design your hunger. She gave it somewhere to feed."
A paper blade slashed through Austin Veyron’s shoulder. His blood soaked the ledger page.
The ink pulsed.
Vharra’s shadow-script shifted.
IF HE LEARNS THE TRUTH, OFFER HIM THE CROWN.
Books slammed into the archive door while the Amendment’s stretched wings reconstructed into something lethal on the other side.
"We need to keep moving," Nahlia said, stuffing their transcribed pages into Elena’s pack. "Before the next archive chamber locks us inside."
Tessa glanced up at Austin then back down at their copied sentence. "Do we burn it?"
He looked between the name and claim above it on the ledger. One option was the obvious thing to do. Burn the threat away. Other hand remained every reason in the world to hide the truth and survive to see what they could change.
"Above code," Austin replied. "Leave the ledger."
Nahlia sliced a narrow strip from the margin of the page, ink noting the date and Vharra’s official footnote. Sarielle then lit the page’s corners with flame, careful not to burn the name itself.
Fire consumed the black ledger’s surface.
The archive door slid open behind them, yanking the group into a service corridor.
Running, they could hear the Ledger devour itself searching for them overhead. Corridor walls shifted from their path as they sprinted by. Bookcases stretched across intersections sealing new routes like mouths agape. Paper clerks spilled out from every alcove down the corridor’s walls armed with pens and blank pages.
STATE YOUR CLAIM TO THE NETWORK.
NO! Tessa screamed.
The clerks advanced on the group. Kaela shredded the first through her shield while Rin snapped its pen in two. Seven flared the corridor bright with light while Nahlia slashed a path through the shifting shelves with a ribbon of her own ink-blood.
Austin felt his seed try to break free with every open page they passed. Kept a tight grasp on it until one of the clerks snagged Elena’s dress and stapled her initials into her forearm.
ELENA — DEPENDENT OF .
Austin snapped the page free, devouring the sentence before it could bleed onto her skin. Elena scrubbed at the remaining ink herself.
"That sentence belongs to me," she said.
"I know." Austin slapped a hand over where her name had been branded. "I stopped it."
She offered a small smile despite herself. "Please don’t let that happen."
Ahead, Nahlia spotted a service door stamped with the broken crown icon of archives past. "The door leads further down. The Ledger believes we destroyed the registry. Believes this is our only way out."
The group forced their way through the service door as paper clerks enveloped them.
Austin Veyron spared a glance at the copied strip Elena clutched in her pack.
She had his back.
She hadn’t known him long enough to not.
The door locked behind them with a familiar thud, broken-crown sigil sealing with finality. Several ragged breaths passed before they heard anything but the sound of their expedition panting and paper clerks on the other side tearing through files.
Nahlia examined the door’s lockwork. "Files in redundant-wing archives are reserved for failed amendments. Words Vharra wrote that she deemed too dangerous for Archive readers near the public claim registry."
Veyra pointed to their copied sentence above their discovery on the floor. "Like our friend."
Austin hated how that knowledge settled into his bones. For months he thought his hunger was punishment. Punishment he accepted and learned to use as a weapon against the Ledger. If nothing else, the Ledger’s programming left loopholes that someone somewhere had given his hunger a place to feed long before Austin Veyron ever heard of demons.
Elena rubbed her thumb across the strip of transcribed text hidden in Elena’s pack. "Predictions aren’t commands."
"No," Austin Veyron agreed. "But they’re an excuse."
"So we dig until we find more information."
Red light sparked in the corridor’s exiting end. Another blank page slid free of the wall behind it.
CANDIDATE RECORD — SEALED BY THE FIRST QUEEN .
Nahlia swallowed. "There wasn’t a first queen. If that seal is legitimate, then what we found is older than the network itself."
Paper clerks clawed at the archive door behind them.
Kaela raised her shield above their heads. "Then we best keep reading."
The expedition barreled down the corridor as fast as their legs could carry them, Ledger’s diverted patrols quickly gaining ground behind them.
