Lot 116 was a sword.

Not just any sword. A black blade with writing etched into the steel. The auctioneer whispered the sword’ s name like a secret prize.

"Deceased original owner." She flicked her wrist. "Signature cleanly wiped."

The silver hammer clacked against the dais.

A finger raised from behind a mirror box.

Lot 116 sold.

Austin Veyron stared as the sword name blinked away into the winner’ s placard. Somewhere someone’ s history sold to become someone else’ s accessory.

Lot 117 was a route right.

Lot 118 was a tethered adult demon engineer, face obscured by a silver screen and listed signature struck through as pending.

Austin Veyron looked away before lust in his chest solidified into something other than anger.

The auctioneer raised the black token for Lot 119.

"A rare asset," she said. "A future claim against Maelis of Grand Meridian. Ember-ward collector. Territorial root access." She paused for sale. " Commencing at one hundred mirror marks."

Elena gripped the ledger case till her knuckles whitened.

At the far side of the arena, Rin dumped an entire tray of bright liquor onto a mirror hound’ s paws.

The hound snarled, crushing three bid boxes in its frantic stumble. Behind her, Sarielle lobbed a silver flare into the crowd. Every mirror in the arena flickered.

The distraction had begun.

Nahlia and Tessa ducked under the auction dais.

Austin Veyron spotted them through the crowd space: Nahlia jamming her pen against a concealed master page while Tessa peeled copied contract glyphs free beside her. The page bucked. Words inked across its surface, flexing into tiny black claws.

Two chain wardens descended from the auction dais.

Veyra caught the first, snagging its hooked spear against her jacket collar. Austin caught the second before it could reach the page. Its armor anchored into every mirrored box around the auction floor. Every time Austin punched it, all the boxes glitched with impact feedback.

The auctioneer smiled.

"This is an open auction," she said. "Buyers are forbidden from interfering. Security teams are not."

The warden swung its chain fist into Austin Veyron’ s shoulder. He snagged the link, unlocked DEVOUR around the admin subroutine, and pulled it free from the metal. The warden’ s fist floated.

Austin Veyron left the core Systems untouched.

Twisted the chain out of the way and knocked the warden into an empty bid box. Every mirror in the box shattered down to the armor’ s waist.

The other warden shoved Veyra back toward the auction dais. She sliced its spear clean in two then rammed her elbow hard into the armor jawline. The mask cracked open.

Inside was a grown demon man looking back. Vulnerable. Frozen.

Instead of killing it, Veyra stepped back.

"Run," she breathed.

The warden ran.

Above them, the auctioneer raised the hammer.

"One hundred mirror marks. Do I hear one hundred twenty?"

Buyer placards waved.

Austin Veyron felt greed claw at him. Every mirror in the room belonged to him for the taking if he just edited one line of code. Void the bid. Knock the auctioneer off stage. Bend this market to his will.

He loathed how easy such thoughts were to consider.

"We always sign together," Elena breathed. Quiet enough to speak over his second thought.

Tessa screamed up at him from below the auction dais. "I found the master page. It routes directly into the auction hammer!"

At that moment, the auctioneer’ s smile twisted into a sneer.

This wasn’ t about Lot 119. Or Maelis.

The hammer itself was currency. Purchasing it would award the winning bidder future claim against anything in Grand Meridian.

Every time the hammer fell, their bid would become that much stronger.

The auctioneer braced herself to fall.

Austin jumped.

A mirror hound hurdled between him and the dais stage. Rin slid onto its back, dug her knives into the chain collar, and rode it down through the terrified crowd. Sarielle carved everyone through reflected glass.

Austin crashed through the floor onto the auction dais just as the hammer was raised.

The claim seed burned in his pocket.

TAK[AUCTION AUTHORITY.]

He did nothing.

Snatched the hammer from its lock position instead.

The arena exhaled.

Black root magic coursed through his arms; scrambling to rewrite his signature into the auction as the winning bidder. His name popped beside the auctioneer in rising red text.

’Austin Veyron — BUYER.’

Austin looked down at the placard.

Then around the room at Elena and Tessa, Veyra and everyone else they’ d managed to drag out from under the dais.

"No!" he screamed.

Swung the hammer toward the master page.

This time Tessa understood. Thrust Nahlia’ s pen into the signature line and braced herself against it. Nahlia scribbled across the page, frantic. Ink splattered into the paper.

’NO FUTURE PERSON MAY BE SOLD WITHOUT THEIR PRESENT CONSENT.’

Austin brought the hammer down.

The master page cracked in two.

Every mirror shattered throughout the arena blazed white.

Lot 119 vanished.

For a second, every whisper of market banter ceased.

The auctioneer laughed.

"You voided one contract," she shouted. "Look down at the floor."

Tile mirrors parted beneath the auction dais.

Root magic extended below them, thick black scar ripped from the auction hammer and stretching down toward Grand Meridian’ s own root core.

Lot 119 hadn’ t been about saving Maelis. Buying her would have destroyed everyone Austin Veyron loved.

The hammer allowed the buyer unrestricted trade with home.

Its signal triggered.

Mirrors on the opposite side of the arena ignited with broken views of Grand Meridian. Elena and Tessa and everyone else they’ d gotten away stood together at center stage in the hotel ballroom.

Maelis of Grand Meridian stood on top of them all, emberlight sparking between her palms. Claim routes in black text bloomed from the hotel ceilings chasing down the hammer’ s signal.

Even Elena realized it. "They’ re live. The route." She stared at Austin Veyron.

"Not for much longer," Tessa yelled up.

The auctioneer clicked her fingers. Every mirror hound not secured by the rebels charged toward the auction stage. Buyers clung to their placards desperate for someone to forget they existed as property.

Rin tackled the first. Rolled under its clapping teeth and sliced the root line connecting it to the auction route. Sarielle blinded the second with the silver flare. Veyra dispatched the third screaming down the hallway after fleeing civilians.

Austin jumped through the floor mirror back down into the root channel.

Below the auction dais was small. Pitch black. Tunnel like corridors of rootstock and mirrored glass fed half a dozen baby auctions into unseen markets. One route went to Grand Meridian. Another pulsed thick with Maelis’ digital mark. One third connected to the backup market sale.

The seed rattled in his pocket.

[ASSUME MARKET AUTHORITY.]

[CLOSE ALL LINES.]

Austin swallowed a curse. Assume market authority over every active root channel passing through this market would allow him to take ownership.

"You know what this does, right?" Nahlia called down at him from above. Grinding tile under her boots. "Every market line has an end clause! Hidden four folders deep in the buyer conditions."

Tessa landed next to him clutching pieces of the master page in both fists. "I need to parse them. Give me time."

"We’ re giving it to you." He steadied himself against the side of the tunnel as another chain warden poured upward from below. The monstrosity’ s hooked glove slashed across his cheek. Austin caught it out of the air, yanked the command string free of the cyberwire, and pinned the creature hand to hand with the shattered weapon.

Still no touching.

Tessa parsed the first release clause from the bleeding floor.

"The hammer is concealing something," she yelled. "Every root route has a receiver signature."

Elena’ s voice buzzed through his collar from below deck. "Which means Maelis can deny them."

The data scrolled past Tessa along the auction tunnel.

Grand Meridian’ s amber glow sparked in the reflection above them. "Grand Meridian denies your future claim."

Roots flickered.

Tessa yanked the clause free.

Black mirrors slammed closed.

The auction hammer shattered against the underside of the dais. Splinters fell down upon them as every active market link terminated.

Buyers scratched their own name placards off the walls as the auction’ s forced-signature protocol timed out.

Austin Veyron soared. Right back into the market.

The auctioneer hovered over him in fractured glass and wrath.

"You did not corrupt a market by severing one connection."

"We will."

Austin nodded at everyone in the room.

At every buyer, captive, and former warden that would wake up tomorrow to find their name inked beneath their property listings just like he had discovered Maelis.

The market had won. Maybe not today.

But it had begun fighting back.
