The inner court didn’t wait for Calder to get back on his feet.
As soon as he left the white-fire cage, the ceiling roots twitched. Red-gold veins cracked stone, spilling monsters down the descent tunnel. They came in pairs: armored torsos with mirrored faces hoisted aloft by chains designed to drag one half of the Devour seeds toward their pair.
Calder saw the first chain dangle overhead and stopped.
"They’re trying to merge us."
Austin Veyron’s seed pulsed beneath his wrist.
’Sovereign resonance detected.’
[COMPATIBLE CANDIDATE AVAILABLE.]
Accepting would be clean. Efficient. If they merged, Calder and Austin Veyron could combine resources. Share memories. Claim authority over each other. Together they’d probably shred every monster down that tunnel.
Austin Veyron had learned enough to question anything that made victory sound easy.
"No merge."
Calder nodded quickly. "No merge."
The first monster charged.
Veyra met it blade- to-mask and deflected its chain attack. Rin used the tunnel wall to leap over its shoulder, slicing through the tether pulling power down from the ceiling roots. The thing tripped forward, but two others clubbed its sides.
Calder raised a hand.
Dark energy bloomed between his fingers. Austin Veyron felt his seed shift toward that power. Hungry for the resonance it offered. Calder’s mouth twisted as vines of red-gold climbed the old collar at his neck.
"Tell me what you see."
Calder locked eyes with the monsters. "Each core connects back to the court. Take them and the network learns our movements."
"Break the connections then."
Together but divided, they stepped into the fight.
Austin Veyron cast DEVOUR on the tether wrapped around the left monster’s chest cavity. Calder punched through the right one’s collar hard enough to blast through the authority seal without destroying the core. The chained bodies dropped—dead, but released enough that they skidded away from the ceiling roots.
The third one learned fast. It wrenched its mirrored mask free to reveal a memory of Calder.
Calder stared at the image, rooted to the ground.
Young Calder sat on a throne of chains while NPCs with blank eyes pointed at him. "You did this. You will do this again," the projection whispered.
Calder faltered.
The collar at his throat tightened.
Austin Veyron stepped between him and the memory. "It’s not an order."
"You don’t understand what I’ve done."
"I know you didn’t." Austin Veyron replied. "But I can see what you’re choosing now."
Elena rested a hand on Calder’s shoulder. "Forgiveness isn’t automatic. But you do get to choose again."
The illusion fractured.
Together they dove for the monster’s core. Calder plucked its mask from its face with both hands, punching the fake authority seal from its neck. When they ripped the mirror free, they saw an adult court warden bound in the monster’s armor.
It sobbed on the ground.
Calder stepped away, fighting the urge to devour its core.
Austin Veyron saw how hard that cost him.
The tunnel shook. Screams echoed through every root vein.
"You’ve failed her."
The voice was Vharra’s.
Two seeds will always hunger for a sovereign. Austin Veyron knew that much. Hunger gathers. Swallows. Claims authority over everything it devours.
The tunnel shuddered once more. Her voice trembled.
"Sometimes we look for that power in others so we can ignore it within ourselves."
Calder met Austin Veyron’s eyes. "Guess she was right about gathering things."
"What gathers can always be scattered."
The roots in the ceiling converged, tangling into a chained barricade sealing off the passage deeper into the inner court. The white path beneath the First Queen’s ledger book pulsed toward them from the other side of that wall.
Nahlia traced a line that curled along its base.
The message had been etched into stone too lightly to notice until now. ’LETTERING ONLY VISIBLE UPON OATH BREAKING AND CLAUSE CLAIMING.’
"She bound herself to this place when she built the network." Calder said. "Nothing here is hers unless the Queen bears its weight too."
Tessa found the line carved into the wall’s foundation.
’THE QUEEN OWNS EVERY CHAIN SHE REFUSES TO BREAK.’
Veyra looked up at the throne room arching above them. "If that’s true then every contract they pushed into this place is another weight on Vharra."
"And if we lift those weights?" Elena asked.
Calder’s red eye snapped open. "We make her pay for it."
The chain wall buckled inward, folding under the mass of its creator’s oath.
Austin Veyron didn’t have to command it.
He only had to reveal the truth it had been designed to hide.
The white path yawning toward them opened wide.
Behind them, the entire inner court was waking up to her Sovereign debt.
The first wave crashed into the tunnel like a hurricane. Concealed contracts ripping free in every direction. Doors blasted open above them. Wardens screamed as lines they didn’t know existed sprang loose to serve whoever had loosed them from the Queen’s control.
Nahlia clutched the ledger book to her chest. Blank space replaced every line.
[UNRESOLVED CLAIM — BURDEN RETURNED TO QUEEN]
Every line corresponded to a contract that had been forcibly woven into the affairs of the inner court. Vharra ensured she could never be found when those claims got traced back to her authority. Skilled architects designed the network around blind obedience. Layers of accountants and wardens meant to protect their Queen by burying her from accountability.
The First Queen’s oath had changed that.
Calder ran his finger across the fissured leather of his restored collar. "I remember finding something like this the first time. Thought she was protected by the oath. Never knew she could trap someone so greedy they’d take it all."
Austin Veyron stared down the white path in front of them. "Can they hurt her with that kind of debt?"
"It weakens her," Nahlia said. "But only if people know whose chains belong to whom."
Court monsters flooded into the tunnel. Not quite what they were before. Mirrored masks flickered between Vharra’s crest and... blank space. One monster held a chain blade aimed at Calder’s neck, then paused when its oath line writhed across its forearm.
"What owns me?" it screamed.
Veyra dropped her sword. "No one."
The monster lowered its weapon.
Word spread through the tunnel behind them. Other wardens unstuck themselves from the court’s roots. Some fled toward the white path. Others stationed themselves behind it, barricading Calder and everyone else who had poured into the tunnel from above.
Austin Veyron felt himself want to devour them. Decide for them. Claim their obedience permanent with a word.
He didn’t.
"Stay if you want to stay. Leave if you need to go somewhere else," he said.
A figure saluted with the hilt of a snapped chain blade. "We’ll be staying."
Calder eyed Austin Veyron. "You really think that’s enough?"
"No." Austin Veyron shook his head. "But it’s where it starts."
The white path split at the tunnel’s far end. One direction curled back up toward Vharra’s throne room. The other plunged off into shadow, down a trail labeled on the First Queen’s ledger as the Oath Well.
Nahlia hovered her finger over the warning etched beneath it.
’THE QUEEN’S FIRST CHAIN WAS FORGED HERE. BREAK NO OATH WITHOUT KNOWING WHO BLEEDS FOR IT.’
Calder grit his teeth. "We take her there."
Austin Veyron scanned his team. No one was ordered forward. Individually they raised their hands to mark the path toward the Oath Well.
Two seeds.
Two sides.
Neither side Devour resonating with the other.
Both seeds refusing to obey the Queen.
Together they fell down the root of her power, every mind among them free to witness what happened next.
