Sable walked toward Grand Meridian across the black road, giving herself time.

The outer gate stayed open behind Austin Veyron’ first line of defense. Lines of white root traced across pavement, chained not to a throne but to citizens inside the Freehold who volunteered to anchor routes. Every time Sable’ hunger contacted the line, it passed into a different volunteer’ hand. The strain moved. It refused to land on one person.

Sable stopped ten paces away.

"You call this freedom," she said. "I call it inefficiency."

Austin Veyron stood with Veyra, Rin, Calder, and Vharra at the white roots’ edge. Volunteer wardens guarded evacuation corridors beyond them. Marcus confirmed ledger entries from the lobby; every time he touched a route inside Grand Meridian, living witnesses checked his name.

"You came to offer terms," Austin Veyron said. "Offer them."

Sable smiled. "Give the Hunger Emperor the Devour seeds. Give him the broken Queen. He will spare this building until the First Feast ends."

"And then?" Rin asked.

"Then he eats whoever can’t defend themselves."

Vharra stepped forward. "You have always been a coward, Sable. You make slaughter into a law because you are too weak to say no."

The herald’ eyes darkened.

Black roots exploded from the road.

The first wave hit the white perimeter line like the first half of a falling bridge. Volunteers inside Grand Meridian screamed as the common ledger distributed pressure through every confirmed route. The roots did not break.

Sable charged another line into position behind the first. Hundreds of tendrils feeding from it shaped like mouths all trying to feed at once.

Veyra cut through it before it reached the white line. Rin walked across its surface, severing feed lines that connected the wave to city marks outside the building. Calder hit exposed root knots with surgical seed blasts, canceling commands without claiming authority.

Austin Veyron found the path’ central root right beneath Sable’ feet.

He could consume it.

He could take the hunger feeding the Herald and absorb her strength before the Feast began.

The seed was screaming at him to act.

[CONSUME SEED SOURCE.]

Austin Veyron closed his fist over his wrist.

"You," he said to Marcus through the route relay. "Can we isolate the road’ ledger entry?"

"As long as your route teams are willing to confirm it," Marcus replied.

Inside Grand Meridian, the confirmations started.

"I choose hall east."

"I choose kitchen."

"I choose hospital."

White roots lifted beneath the black road. They bound other people to the Herald’ problem, not Sable. One by one, the white roots dislodged the eight remaining scout marks from the Freehold.

Sable’ smile faded.

Vharra attacked.

She wasn’nt feeding from the red- gold crown she’ lost. She used the broken debt still threaded through her body, twisting it into a sword of white-hot light and absence. Her attack carved through Sable’ shoulder.

The Herald laughed, black hunger pouring from the slash.

"You will always answer to him," Sable told her.

"Maybe," Vharra said. "But I choose what I do with that."

Austin Veyron and Calder converged without syncing their seeds. Austin Veyron severed the command chaining the Herald to the road. Calder detonated the final black root clawing toward the gate.

Sable fell backwards.

All eight city marks went dark for a heartbeat.

Then Sable lifted her bloodless hand.

"This is not an invasion," she said. "It is a contest."

The Hunger Emperor’ voice filled every black route in the city.

’DEVOUR SEED: CHOOSE YOUR SOURCE.’

Austin Veyron’ wrist flared with pain.

Sable disappeared into the road’ collapsing shadow.

"The First Feast will show you what you are willing to become," she said.

The black road disappeared.

White roots stayed at the gate.

Everyone who lived inside the Freehold had heard the Emperor’ call.

The silence that followed was worse than combat.

Root lines at the white perimeter dimmed as route keepers throughout the hotel methodically released their emergency connections. Volunteers inside Grand Meridian declared injuries, blocked doors, and three evacuation routes that would need repair before dawn. It recorded zero forced signatures.

Marcus stepped outside through the gate, ledger slate in hand. "The pressure pushed through thirty- six volunteers. No one person bore it by themselves."

Austin Veyron looked over the line of exhausted defenders. "Then this line succeeded."

"It held," Veyra said. "That doesn’t mean the same thing."

She was right. Sable hadn’nt committed armies to invading the Freehold. She’d poked at the city’ defenses and proven how the ledger redistributed force. The Hunger Emperor knew how much stress it could handle. His next attack wouldn’nt take the form of a road battering the gate. It would look like something designed to make those volunteers turn on each other.

Vharra leaned on the shattered street’ edge, watching blood drip from her reopened mark at throat. "The Feast’ contest has been going on since before my court was born. The Emperor gives seed bearers choices when they’ desperate enough to want something as simple as power over others. If Austin Veyron claims his source, the seed won’ t resist hunger anymore."

"And what does it cost?" Calder asked.

"The seed itself," Vharra said. "Everything the seed has learned to care about."

Austin Veyron felt tension settle around them. The Emperor didn’ t just want to devour cities. He wanted the Devour seed to want him. As soon as Austin Veyron learned the choice existed, he made it himself.

Elena stepped out through the gate with a transfer book. "Then we better build reasons not to claim him."

It was simple advice, but the city ledger reacted. Lines of white route awareness stretched across the map toward shelters, hospitals, every person who confirmed the hotel defense. They weren’ t shackles. They were promises the common ledger had always given everyone who set down roots: a list of everything each volunteer had chosen to protect by being present.

Austin Veyron looked down at his burning wrist.

The seed still offered the Emperor’ invitation.

[CHOOSE YOUR SOURCE.]

Austin Veyron snapped his hand shut over it.

"I already did," he said.

Somewhere outside the city limits, one of the black marks re- lit.

It began to move.

The black road on the map traveled toward the river district. The temporary shelter there was full of people saved from the court routes when they collapsed. The Emperor wasn’ t targeting military installations. He was picking targets drained by failure.

Nahlia reported to the common ledger as everyone kept watching. "He’ s trying to trap the seed into impossible choices. Help one shelter. Watch another starve. Devour one of our cores and risk being devoured yourself. Turn the Emperor away and watch what happens to everyone trapped here."

Austin Veyron saw the pattern forming behind Nahlia’ words. He didn’ t have to defeat the Hunger Emperor to win. The monster just needed Austin Veyron to decide that consent, patience, and shared responsibility were weaknesses cities had no right to uphold.

Calder leaned next to him, shouting over the city.

"He wants us to claim the crown because he hurts every option we have left."

"Then we build more options," Elena said.

The Freehold didn’ t wait for Austin Veyron to act.

Someone from the former warden team volunteered to staff the river shelter. The kitchen team diverted resources. A pair of court scribes offered backup with a portable ledger root they could use to monitor the evacuation route. Volunteers trusted each other to protect the choices they made.

Threadlines of white route traffic shifted across the map.

Vharra watched the change spread.

"This will make you harder to break," she said. "But it will also make the consequences of every loss impossible to ignore."

Austin Veyron met her gaze. "We are finished running from losses because we hide behind our titles."

Black hunger flared at the city’ edge from the far river mark.

Austin Veyron assembled everyone working counter- hunt. "Rin. Veyra. Calder. We are moving now. Every route team sticks together."

The common ledger copied his instructions, waiting for volunteers to agree.

The Hunger Emperor wanted someone to submit and become his sovereign.

Grand Meridian was learning what resistance looked like without one.
