[The Next Morning — House Vaelric]

The first rays of dawn spilled across House Vaelric, bathing the ancient halls in pale golden light. Servants hurried through the corridors, preparing for another day, while outside the banners of the White Wolf fluttered gently in the morning breeze.

Grand Duke Lior adjusted the ceremonial cloak resting over his shoulders and reached for the chamber door.

"Father..." The quiet voice behind him brought his hand to a halt.

Lior turned. Kael stood near the stairs, dressed in simple red robes. His amber eyes were fixed upon his father.

Lior studied him for a moment before speaking. "Is something the matter?"

Kael remained silent; only after several long heartbeats did he ask, "Are you leaving for somewhere?"

Lior let out a weary sigh. "Yes, since the Lord of Darkness refused to acknowledge your ascension...there is only one path left. I intend to meet the high priest. The throne of Qashmar has remained empty for an entire year."

His voice grew heavier.

"The empire cannot continue drifting without an emperor."

Silence settled between them.

Kael slowly lowered his gaze, then... "Father."

Lior looked back at him.

Kael drew a deep breath; his voice was calm and steady, then without the slightest hesitation.

"...I have made my decision."

Grand Duke Lior frowned. "What decision?"

Kael, with the determination burning within his amber eyes, was unlike anything Lior had ever seen. "...I shall ascend the throne. I will become the Emperor of Qashmar."

The room fell completely silent as Lior’s eyes widened. "But the Lord of Darkness has already forbidden—"

"Father." Kael gently interrupted him; his voice never rose, and yet every word carried the weight of absolute conviction.

"The Shadow King, he may be my husband, but he is not the master of my life. My fate, my choices...and the path I walk...belong to me."

He turned toward the distant Imperial Palace once more. "The Lunar Covenant may bind our souls...but it does not imprison my will."

His gaze never wavered.

"I was born an heir of House Vaelric. I was raised to protect this empire, and if accepting the crown is the burden the Spirits have placed before me...then I shall bear it." His voice became quieter.

"Even if I must bear it alone."

Grand Duke Lior stared at his son for a long time...he said nothing. This...was no longer the young alpha who had left home months ago; the man standing before him had changed, and there was pain hidden within those amber eyes.

A loneliness Lior could not understand, but there was also something else, a resolve.

With an unbreakable resolve, almost instinctively, Lior’s gaze drifted toward the end of the stairs. Beyond it...Lytharion stood in complete silence; the Lord of Darkness neither spoke...nor objected. Those ancient golden eyes rested upon Kael alone, unreadable and timeless.

For several long moments no one moved and no one breathed. Then...Lior nodded.

"Very well. If this is the path you have chosen...then House Vaelric shall walk it beside you."

He stepped forward and rested a firm hand upon Kael’s shoulder; his voice carried the pride of a father...and the solemn dignity of a Grand Duke.

"I shall inform the Imperial Court; the coronation shall begin."

Kael gave a single nod. "...Yes, Father."

Outside, the bells of the capital began to ring. One...after another their solemn echoes rolled across the mountains, drifted through bustling cities, reached the quiet villages nestled beneath the cliffs, and spread to every corner of the Empire of Qashmar.

They announced not merely the rise of a new emperor...but the beginning of an age that would forever alter the fate of mortals...gods...and the world itself.

Silence followed.

Kael slowly turned at the top of the marble staircase... Lytharion stood motionless; his long black robes swayed gently in the morning wind as sunlight spilled through the entrance behind him, casting his figure into shadow.

Their eyes met. Amber met gold. For a single heartbeat it felt as though two flames born beneath different heavens had become one; neither spoke and neither looked away.

Then a faint smile curved upon the Lord of Darkness’s lips, not warm, not gentle, a smile that belonged to something ancient and something terrifying.

He descended the stairs with slow, measured steps until he stood before Kael, far too close. Close enough that Kael could feel the cold radiating from the deity’s very existence.

Yet this time... Kael did not retreat; he lifted his chin and met those ancient golden eyes without wavering. For several long moments...they simply looked at one another.

Then Lytharion spoke; his voice was low, calm, and far more frightening than anger.

"Do not forget." Kael remained silent. "The promise you made beneath the Lunar Covenant. If the day ever comes...that you choose to break our agreement..."

His golden eyes narrowed ever so slightly.

"...I shall drag you into Nhar’zhul Veyth..." The very name seemed to drain the warmth from the room. "...the Prison Beyond Shadows and I shall cage you there...for all eternity."

A chill raced down Kael’s spine. Even he...who had stood against death countless times could not suppress the knot tightening within his throat; he swallowed quietly before answering.

"I shall not break my word. My promise...is absolute."

For the briefest moment... Lytharion’s gaze softened, so briefly it might never have happened at all.

"Good." He stepped past Kael, his shoulder brushed lightly against Kael’s. "As expected...from my Queen."

Without another word, the Lord of Darkness walked away. Never once looking back.

[Moments Later—Outside House Vaelric]

The great doors slowly opened. Lytharion stepped into the morning sunlight; the golden rays fell across his face, yet they brought him no warmth. The courtyard stood silent.

Servants remained kneeling. Knights lowered their heads. Even the wind itself seemed unwilling to disturb the Lord of Darkness.

His gaze slowly fell toward the ground, fresh carriage tracks, deep and uneven and dozens of them. He stared at them for a very long time. Then his ancient eyes darkened.

"The stench has already reached this house." His voice was barely above a whisper. "...Evil has finally surrounded House Vaelric."

His gaze lingered upon the mansion one final time.

"Now no one can save this family."

The wind carried away his words. Lytharion slowly closed his eyes.

"It was...his choice."

The next moment his figure dissolved into countless fragments of black ash...before disappearing into the morning sky.

[House Aevoris — That Night]

SLAM!!

A priceless crystal vase exploded against the marble floor. Shards scattered across the grand hall like shattered ice. Servants immediately dropped to their knees.

No one dared breathe. At the center of the hall...stood the head of House Aevoris—

Duke Vaelor Aevoris.

One of the Seven Great Dukes, his crimson cloak billowed behind him as fury twisted his handsome face into something monstrous.

"...That Alpha..." His voice trembled with barely restrained rage. "...accepted the throne?"

Another vase crashed against the wall.

"ANSWER ME!"

His icy blue eyes snapped toward the young woman standing below the throne. She neither trembled nor lowered her gaze. Her silver hair rested neatly over her shoulders, cold, elegant, and emotionless.

Lady Seraphine Aevoris.

The eldest daughter of House Aevoris, she bowed her head as her voice remained calm.

"My information was accurate, Father. The Lord of Darkness publicly declared before the royal knights that Lord Kael would never be permitted to ascend the throne."

She frowned almost imperceptibly.

"I do not know what changed."

"DON’T YOU DARE SAY YOU DON’T KNOW!"

WHOOSH!!

A dagger flew through the air. It passed so close to Seraphine’s face that several strands of silver hair drifted to the floor. A thin crimson line appeared across her cheek; blood slowly trickled downward.

Gasps echoed throughout the hall. No one moved. Not even Seraphine; she remained exactly where she stood, head lowered and hands folded as though nothing had happened.

Duke Vaelor pointed at her with undisguised disgust.

"...Useless." His voice dripped with contempt. "You worthless girl. You failed again."

Seraphine quietly lowered herself to one knee. "I accept Your Grace’s judgment."

The Duke laughed bitterly.

"A judgment?" He descended the steps until he stood directly before her. "I should never have brought you into this house. I should have left you where I found you...starving on that filthy street."

For the first time...Seraphine’s fingers tightened ever so slightly, only for a heartbeat, and then they relaxed once more. "I apologize...Your Grace."

The Duke scoffed; his eyes slowly swept across every noble gathered inside the hall.

"This cannot continue." His voice became deathly calm. "If Kael Vaelric ascends the throne...House Aevoris will lose everything."

Silence.

He slowly clenched his fist.

"Then we simply ensure...he never reaches the throne."

The hall grew deathly still. Even the candles seemed to stop flickering. Duke Vaelor’s lips curved into a cruel smile.

"I don’t care how: poison, assassination, or accident." His cold eyes gleamed with murderous intent. "Before the coronation...Kael Vaelric...must die."

Silence.

No one objected, or dared. Far away...beneath the same silver moon the bells of the Empire continued to ring. Completely unaware that somewhere within the darkness the first blade of treason had already been unsheathed.
