Chapter 560: Chapter 563: Evidence

Li Ji took her hand.

Before she could pull away, he spoke.

"Perhaps you don’t know this yet, but my Princess Consort’s name is Hua Manman."

Hua Manman froze.

’Did I hear that wrong?’

’Or maybe it was just a name that sounded similar?’

Then she heard the man continue.

"She is you, and you are my Princess Consort."

Hua Manman glanced at the man’s face, then at her own tightly held hand, and couldn’t help but wonder if there was something wrong with his head.

She wanted to deny his claim.

But the gaps in her memory reminded her—

She had forgotten so much.

The one whose head was truly messed up was probably her.

Hua Manman: "Do you have any proof?"

Li Ji: "Wait here. I’ll go get it."

Hua Manman was surprised he could actually produce evidence, and her astonishment only fueled her curiosity.

’What kind of proof could he possibly have?’

Li Ji stood up, walked over to a curio shelf, and picked up an exquisite wooden box.

He opened the small lock on the box.

Hua Manman craned her neck to look and saw a thick stack of paper inside.

Li Ji took all the papers out and placed them in front of her.

"Take a look. This is all your old handwriting."

Hua Manman picked up the top sheet of Xuan paper. On it were a few large, crooked characters written with a calligraphy brush.

A single glance told her it was the work of a beginner; every stroke was stiff and clumsy.

Li Ji: "That’s your first attempt at calligraphy. I told you it was ugly, but you wouldn’t admit it."

Hua Manman shot him a look, then picked up the second sheet. The handwriting on it was a tiny bit better.

Li Ji: "I made you practice every day. This is from the second day. It’s still terrible, but at least it shows some improvement."

Hua Manman flipped through the pages one by one.

The writing on nearly every page was better than the one before it.

Following the changes in the script, she could almost see the person practicing grow little by little.

Li Ji: "This is just a portion of it. I never threw away any of your practice sheets. I stored them all in the warehouse. If you want to see them, I can have them brought over."

Hua Manman looked at the words written on the last page—

For you, it was love at first sight, and a rude awakening at second sight.

Li Ji explained with a deadpan expression.

"I asked you to make a sentence with ’love at first sight,’ and this is the nonsense you came up with."

Hua Manman: "..."

She silently pressed her lips together.

’Hold it in. Don’t laugh.’

Although the sentence was just begging to be made fun of, this was indeed her style.

Besides, the handwriting on the paper was almost identical to her current calligraphy.

’Handwriting can be forged.’

’But this whole thick stack of paper couldn’t all be forgeries, could it?’

’And even if they were, the Regent King would have put in far too much effort.’

’Someone of his status has absolutely no reason to do something like this!’

Li Ji: "You also sang me a love song once."

Hua Manman blinked, her curiosity piqued. "What love song?"

Li Ji began to sing, completely devoid of emotion.

"Just because in the crowd,

I glanced at you one more time,

I want to goof around with you for the rest of my life.

Neither of our looks are anything special,

And our voices aren’t sickeningly sweet,

But we both have background music like a frog,

Croaking, ’Lonely, lonely, lonely...’"

Hua Manman bit her lip, trying desperately not to laugh out loud.

She was trying so hard that her lips were pressed into a wavy line.

Li Ji watched her with a blank face. "Go ahead and laugh if you want to."

Hua Manman couldn’t hold back anymore and collapsed onto the bed, letting out a series of honking laughs.

She laughed so hard her wound started to ache.

It was only when she noticed the Regent King’s expression darkening at a visible rate that she forced herself to rein it in a little.

Li Ji: "To this day, I still don’t understand. What does ’BGM’ mean?"

Hua Manman explained, barely suppressing her laughter.

"It means background music."

Li Ji silently filed away this piece of information.

He said, "You always have some strange and bizarre words coming out of your mouth."

’That’s probably because I’m a transmigrator,’ Hua Manman thought. ’With a gap of several thousand years between us, of course our vocabulary would be different.’

But then again,

after hearing Li Ji recount so many past events, she was finding herself more and more convinced by his story.

The song, in particular, was just too persuasive.

Hua Manman said sincerely, "You must have really loved me before, right?"

Li Ji retorted, "What makes you say that?"

Hua Manman: "If you didn’t love me, you probably would have beaten me to death the moment I finished that song."

Li Ji: "..."

’You’re certainly self-aware.’

A loud knock sounded on the door.

Li Xun’s voice came from outside. "Mother! Is Mother in there?"

Li Ji got up to open the door.

Almost as soon as he opened it, Li Xun ducked under his arm and darted inside.

However, before Li Xun could take two steps, Li Ji grabbed him by the collar from behind.

Li Ji lifted him up.

"Where do you think you’re running?"

Li Xun flailed and shouted.

"Let me go! I want to see Mother!"

When he woke up this morning, he heard that his Royal Father had brought Mother home last night, and that she had even stayed the night.

This was the best news he could have possibly received.

He had just washed his face and rinsed his mouth before tearing over.

Li Ji set him on the ground and reminded him.

"Your mother is injured. Be careful and don’t bother her."

Li Xun immediately grew tense and asked anxiously, "How did Mother get hurt? Who bullied her?"

By the end, he was practically grinding his teeth, his little face fierce, as if he were ready to charge out and fight someone to the death at any moment.

Li Ji: "The people who bullied your mother have all been caught. I’ll handle the rest. You just need to stay by her side. You don’t need to worry about anything else."

Li Xun was still indignant.

He wanted to avenge his mother, too.

But he knew he was still too young and not strong enough; there were many things he wanted to do but couldn’t.

He could only clench his small fists and silently remind himself that he had to grow up quickly, get stronger, and never let anyone bully his mother again!

By the time Li Xun ran into the inner chamber, the fierce expression on his face had vanished completely.

He called out in a soft, childish voice.

"Mother!"

Hua Manman’s feelings were complicated.

Before, she had thought the child missed his mother so much that he had mistaken her for the real thing.

Only now did she understand that the boy hadn’t been mistaken at all.

Every time he called her "Mother," it was sincere and full of emotion.

Li Xun leaned in close, asking with wide, hopeful eyes, "Does it still hurt, Mother?"

The boy was so sweet and adorable that Hua Manman couldn’t help but smile.

"It doesn’t hurt anymore."

Just then, Li Ji also walked in, holding a bowl of dark, black medicinal soup.

"It’s time for your medicine."

Li Xun immediately raised his right hand, eager to try. "I want to help Mother drink her medicine!"

Hua Manman: "..."

The smile on her face slowly faded.
