The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing
Chapter 308: Tomorrow’s TransactionAfter giving Luo Linlang a few reminders, Lu Sangjiu told her what she had discovered.
"The Demon Cultivators have all been moved to the inner courtyard. We can’t wait too long, or else their lives will be in danger."
"So, we have to make our move by tomorrow at the latest. It would be best if you could dig up some information about the mastermind’s background before then."
Even if they captured them alive, it would be difficult to make them talk about something this significant. It would be best to find out what they could ahead of time.
Luo Linlang nodded. "No problem. I can use my Charm Technique to get more information out of Fang Shaoxin. But I’m afraid a dandy like him won’t know much. I’ll do what I can!"
"Alright then, be careful. I’m off to meet with Li Qiancheng and the others."
After their conversation, Lu Sangjiu quietly left the Fang estate. She then used a Communication Talisman to contact Li Qiancheng and the others. When she learned they were staying at an inn, she immediately headed over.
Li Qiancheng was a seasoned veteran. He’d had them enter the city separately on purpose, and they weren’t even staying at the same inn.
After all, their group’s cultivation levels were quite high. Arriving together would have been too conspicuous and might have tipped off their enemy.
Everyone had checked into their respective inns and were now quietly gathering in Li Qiancheng’s room.
When Lu Sangjiu arrived, everyone was already there, waiting for her.
Seeing her arrive alone, Li Qiancheng couldn’t help but ask, "Why are you by yourself? Where’s Linlang?"
She had kept them updated on her and Luo Linlang’s situation along the way, so it was simple enough to explain.
She recounted how Luo Linlang had infiltrated the Fang Family, naturally omitting any mention of her Jue Pearl and just using another excuse to explain it away.
The others still thought it was risky, but they knew Lu Sangjiu was closest to her. They trusted she wouldn’t have let Luo Linlang go if it were truly dangerous, so they didn’t press the matter.
Feng Lin asked, "So what’s our next move?"
Lu Sangjiu considered this for a moment, her expression turning serious. "I want to take a gamble."
After her discussion with the group, Lu Sangjiu found an inn for herself and contacted Xie Ningyuan.
"Have you found anything on your end?"
"I was just about to contact you," said Xie Ningyuan. "I pulled some strings and managed to find out the identity of that Nascent Soul Cultivator."
"He was once an Honored Guest Elder of the Gold and Silver Gate, but he later left the sect and his whereabouts are unknown."
Honored Guest Elders are typically powerful Loose Cultivators who, for one reason or another, form a connection with a sect and are granted the title.
These individuals aren’t true members of the sect, so leaving is a simple matter. They aren’t required to do things like cripple their own cultivation.
After Xie Ningyuan finished, a vague sense of unease settled over Lu Sangjiu. ’Don’t tell me... all these people have similar backgrounds? If that’s the case, investigating any deeper will be extremely difficult.’
"I understand," she said. "There’s something else I need to tell you."
Deep in the night, Lu Sangjiu once again snuck into the Fang estate.
Her first stop was the young Demon Cultivator.
The boy was surprisingly capable. He had somehow managed to sweet-talk Elder Yuan into lifting the restrictions on his room, giving him considerably more freedom of movement.
However, a restriction had been placed on his body that could kill him at the caster’s whim.
The restriction itself wasn’t a major problem; Lu Sangjiu could remove it for him.
Of course, now wasn’t the right time. So she simply set up a few sound-insulating Barriers to talk with him.
This was the first time they had met face-to-face. The young Demon Cultivator was clearly startled by her appearance. "You... You’re a Cultivator?"
Sensing his apprehension, Lu Sangjiu went straight to the point and brought up Ah Ming. "I’m working with the Young Master of the Divine Tomb Sect. He wants to save his people, and I want to capture these criminals. We’re both just getting what we want."
’Trying to talk to him about love, peace, and the equality of all beings right now would just be a waste of breath. It’s better to put it in terms he’ll understand. That way, I’ll earn his trust faster.’
Sure enough, the moment he heard her mention the Young Master of the Divine Tomb Sect, the young Demon Cultivator grew excited. "It’s the Young Master! He’s come to save us!"
"Mm," Lu Sangjiu said. "He’s in Lu City as well. You’ll see him soon enough."
With that out of the way, she got down to business. "Have you learned anything?"
The youth reined in his excitement and nodded. "I found out that someone is coming tomorrow to buy the newest batch of arrivals. They’ll be used as forced labor to build something, but I don’t know the details."
"In the evening, I begged Elder Yuan to let me see my friend one last time. He didn’t suspect anything and had someone take me to the inner courtyard."
"The security there is tight. All the captured Demon Cultivators are locked up in one place, but they haven’t been harmed."
"There’s a place with even tighter security that I couldn’t get into, but even from a distance, I could vaguely sense Demonic Qi there. Combined with what Elder Yuan said before, I suspect... they’re growing Demon Flowers."
’The Demonic Qi must be suppressed by an Array. If he weren’t a Demon Cultivator, he likely wouldn’t have been able to sense it at all. But for him to sense it even through an Array means the Demonic Qi must be incredibly dense. If they really are growing Demon Flowers, there must be a great many of them.’
Lu Sangjiu’s expression grew grim. She nodded. "I understand... Take care of yourself. I’ll come rescue you tomorrow night. I can also remove the restriction inside you, so don’t be afraid."
A look of joy spread across the youth’s face, and he nodded emphatically. "Okay!"
He paused, then added, "You all be careful... and protect our Young Master. Don’t let anything happen to him."
Lu Sangjiu raised an eyebrow with a slight smile. "You sound pretty close to him. Are you from the Divine Tomb Sect too?"
The youth blushed slightly. "...Yes. The Young Master probably doesn’t know who I am, but I know he’s a good person."
Lu Sangjiu didn’t press for the details of their connection, merely smiling and nodding. "Mm... I think so, too."
After leaving the boy, Lu Sangjiu paid another visit to Luo Linlang’s courtyard.
Most of the day had passed without any word from Luo Linlang, but no news was good news.
After all, Communication Talismans required Spiritual Power to activate. The fact that she hadn’t used one meant she hadn’t run into any danger that would force her to break the seals on her meridians.
It was late at night by the time Lu Sangjiu arrived, but the lamp in Luo Linlang’s room was still on.
The moment she stepped inside, Luo Linlang greeted her cheerfully. "I knew you’d come! I’m glad I stayed up to wait for you!"
Seeing her expression, Lu Sangjiu guessed, "Sounds like you’ve made some progress?"
Luo Linlang giggled. "Not bad. I managed to get something out of Fang Shaoxin with my Charm Technique."
Fang Shaoxin was a complete fool with a cultivation only at the Foundation Establishment Stage. It was ridiculously easy for Luo Linlang to handle him; he told her practically everything he knew.
Just as she suspected, however, Fang Shaoxin knew very little.
"His father hasn’t let him get involved in any of this, so he has no idea what kind of business the family is running. All he knows is that starting about a year ago, many powerful Cultivators began visiting their home one after another."
