The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse

Chapter 27: Blood Memory: Flashback of the Truth

The echo of her own screamed threat, "That’s what I have for you!" rattled against the smooth obsidian pillars, leaving a ringing silence in her ears. Florianthum kept her chest heaving, playing the part of the tyrannical executioner for whatever unseen entity listened in the shadows. But beneath the midnight-blue silk of her gown, her fingers trembled so violently she had to fist them into the fabric to hide it.

Ezaily.

The name didn’t belong in the dark, blood-slicked world. It belonged to dust-moted classrooms, the smell of old ink, and a life she had buried under the layers of armor and deception. Yet, Cassius had seen right through her.

As she stared down at him, the oppressive heat of the chamber faded, replaced by the memory of cold rain, iron, and the chaotic day this nightmare had truly begun.

***Flashback***

It had started with the copper tang of blood. When Cassius had first bitten into her skin, tasting the forbidden fluid, the world had exploded into violence. The soldier guards hadn’t just restrained; they had descended like a pack of starving wolves, even though it looked chaotic. Florianthum remembered the sickening, rhythmic thud of heavy iron-toed boots striking flesh, the wet crack of fracturing bone, and the choked, rattling breaths Cassius drew before his eyes rolled back, leaving him limp in the dirt.

When consciousness finally dragged him back from the dark, the transition was jarring. His vision cleared in painful, pulsing waves.

The first thing he saw was the heavy, intimidating silhouette of a commander standing over him. But then, a sharp, metallic screech broke the silence. Florianthum reached up and unlatched her armet, swinging the heavy visor open.

Cassius’s blood ran completely cold.

The terrifying, ruthless commander commanding the legions of Vampirians was none other than the quiet girl from the back row. The silent classmate. Ezaily.

For a second, the carefully crafted mask of the warlord slipped. In its place were eyes wide with a desperate, frantic concern- an expression that belonged entirely to the girl her used to know.

Cassius’s mind fractured under the weight of the realization. A surge of panicked adrenaline hit his chest. He wanted to scream her name, to demand answers, to shout until his throat was raw. But his jaw wouldn’t move. A thick, coarse rag was wedged tight between his teeth, tasting of old sweat and hemp, choking back his voice into a pathetic, muffled grunt.

Before he could thrash, a cool, soft palm pressed firmly against his bruised cheek. Ezaily’s touch was frantic, a silent plea for him to stay still.

"Bring the carriage," she barked over her shoulder, her voice instantly snapping back into that cold, aristocratic authority. "The royal mover. Now."

But the physical reality of the rag choking his throat was nothing compared to the psychological horror that had bled into his mind right before he woke. When the guard’s boots had finally drifted into a peaceful blackness, he had been violently pulled into someone else’s mind.

It wasn’t a dream. Cassius knew the chaotic, hazy texture of a hallucination, and this was too sharp. Too agonizingly real. He had tapped into a blood memory- a psychic backwash triggered when he bit into Florianthum’s skin. He was seeing ghosts from a past he had no right to witness.

In the memory, the world shifted to a dimly lit living room that smelled of stale rain and burning wax. Standing in the center of the room was a man. But he wasn’t the Ruthless Vampire, clothed in terrifying majesty. He wore simple clothes. He looked entirely, starkly human.

And he wasn’t alone.

Cassius’s chest tightened as he recognized the girl on the floor. It was Ezaily. Not the armored commander commanding legions, but the silent, obedient classmate who used to sit perfectly still in the back row, avoiding everyone’s eyes.

The scene was a slaughter. The man was manic, his eyes wild and blown out as he struck her repeatedly. He gripped a jagged, heavy piece of broken glass, the edges catching the weak light as he brought it down. Ezaily was on her knees, her hands raised in a pathetic defense, sobbing, begging for him to stop. Her voice was a cracked, raw plea that made Cassius want to tear his own ears off. But the man didn’t stop.

With a sickening, deliberate slice, the man dragged the glass across her skin, carving a deep, lethal mark into her face. The blood spilled instantly, hot and dark.

Then, the madness abruptly broke.

The man dropped the bloody shard. It clattered against the floorboards. Instantly, his expression morphed from a sadistic monster into a terrified, panicked boy. The transition was sickening. He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he suddenly began to tend to her wounds with the gentle, desperate care of a guilt-ridden gentleman. He apologized in frantic whispers, trying to wipe away the blood he had just spilled.

The memory fractured and dissolved there, snapping Cassius back to the harsh reality of the present.

The phantom smell of copper and the echoes of Ezaily’s muffled screams were still vibrating in his teeth. He looked up from the dirt at the commander standing over him- at the heavy metal armor shielding her body. Now he understood the armor. It wasn’t just to protect her from enemies; it was a cage to hide the lethal mark carved into her flesh by a man.

The most shocking and important part began after Cassius saw the ruthless vampire king- Lord Vilucious- in that massive hall. His eyes were wide as he sat, a captive on the rooftop of that hall. The man from his dream was none other than the ruthless and fearless man who was dominant in that court.

He was Vilucious... The Lord Vilucious.

Vilucious was the one who carved into her flesh, who played at being a monster and a gentleman all at once.

While sitting on that rooftop as a captive held by Florianthum or Ezaily, he calculated every conclusion to know exactly what was happening. He understood the fact that something was off, as Ezaily was the one who was Florianthum from the beginning, targeting him the most for some reason. Even the dream-like memory that he saw was after he drank her blood, so he was ninety percent sure that she was trying to convey Cassius indirectly for something.

All his doubts and conclusions came to a harsh moment of truth as he recognized something: the moment a fight started between him and Florianthum, as she cut the viscous dark purple fluid from her sword as soon as he was making an attack for the Vampire King into a symbol, which meant:

’GET ME OUT OF HERE. HELP,’ an obscure slang symbol, an old hand-drawn doodle their classmates used to scratch into the corners of their wooden desks whenever a lecture got too brutal or a teacher grew too cruel. Of course, it was completely unknown to the ruthless Vilucious and the vampire elites who were present there.

------

The memory faded completely, leaving Cassius anchoring himself back to the bitter cold of the present room. The obsidian pillars still towered over him, and Florianthum- no, Ezaily- was still breathing heavily, her face twisted in her practiced, theatrical malice.

The truth was stark, cold, and undeniable. Ezaily was just as much a prisoner in the sprawling, blood-soaked court as he was. She wasn’t a conqueror; she was a hostage wearing a crown of thrones. Yet, a heavy, hollow ache settled deep in Cassius’s chest. He had seen the bloody glass, the manic rage of the King, and the terrifying aftermath, but he still didn’t know the full story. He didn’t know the exact sequence of tragedies that had bound her to Vilucious, capturing her forever in a cycle of fear hidden behind these polished, suffocatingly dark walls.

The theatrical rage suddenly drained from her posture, replaced by a rigid, military stillness. She stepped closer, her shadow completely swallowing him as she leaned down. To anyone listening, it would look like an interrogation.

But her eyes were wide, desperate, and pleading.

She spoke, her voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper that barely carried across the stone floor. "Cassius, I would like you to..."
