The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 29: Shredded Uniform: Under the Puppet’s SpellThe silence of the obsidian chamber did not shatter; it peeled away, layer by agonizing layer, under the weight of an impossible betrayal. Cassius remained frozen, his chest pressed flat against the unyielding stone, the raw scrape of rock biting through the threadblade fibers of his shirt. He was tracking the sound- the agonizingly measured tok, tok, tok of Florianthum’s leather heels closing the final distance. The air between them tasted of cold iron and dead ash. Every primitive nerve in his spinal cord screamed at him to scramble backward, to put space between his vulnerable throat and the woman who had sworn her soul to King Vilucious.
Yet, he stayed. He anchored his palms against the dust, choosing the agonizing gamble of absolute stillness. He searched her face as she loomed over him, looking for the girl who had shared quiet, desperate glances with him just hours before.
He found nothing.
Florianthum’s face was a mask carved from winter ice. There was no hesitation in her posture, no tremor in her fingers as she slowly elevated her right arm. The movement was deliberately slow, theatrical, and terrifyingly cinematic. She raised her hand high into the dim, vaulted space of the chamber, her fingers straight, slicing upward as if drawing an invisible blade from the ether. For a fraction of a second, she held it there, silhouetted against the towering dark pillars like an executioner awaiting a signal.
Then, she brought her hand down.
She didn’t use a physical blade, but sheer, compressed force of her localized magic tore through the empty space between them with a vicious, auditory snap. The displaced air hit Cassius like a physical whip. The pressure slammed directly into his chest, tearing a jagged line straight through his dusty, old red Assistant General uniform overcoat. The thick wool fabric- already stained with the grease of a dozen battlefields that he fought to survive and the grime of his long captivity- burst open at the seams, fraying into tattered red ribbons that fluttered into the dirt.
The concussive force lifted him entirely off his hands, throwing his broken from backward. He hit the stone floor hard, the impact rattling his teeth and driving the remaining breath from his lungs in a ragged gasp. He rolled onto his side, coughing violently, the taste of copper flooding his mouth. The vulnerability of his exposed chest, stripped of his rank and his armor, made him feel naked in the worst possible way.
The physical pain was manageable; the psychological breaking point was not.
"Stop it already!" Cassius roared, the sound tearing from his throat, raw and undisguised. The words echoed off the high ceiling, sounding small and pathetic against the vast emptiness of the hall. "Stop it!"
The echo of his scream hadn’t even faded when Florianthum began to laugh.
It was not a sound born of amusement. It was an awful, violent explosion of noise that rattled against the stone pillars. Her shoulders shook, her head tilting backward as the laughter tore out of her, uncontrollable and jagged. Yet, even as her mouth curved into a wide, hysterical smile, her face was a battleground. Her features twisted in a horrific display of forced joy, a performance so unnatural it made Cassiu’s stomach turn.
Then came the tears.
Heavy, wet drops welled in the corners of her eyes, spilling over her flushed cheeks and leaving pale tracks through the dust on her skin. She was smiling for her life, laughing with a terrifying intensity, while her eyes wept in silent, agonizing protest of her own actions.
"Ahahahahhaha... ahahaha!"
The sound filled the room, bouncing off the dark stone, suffocating the air. It was the sound of a mind being shattered from the inside out, a puppet mimicking mirth while the strings cut deep into the flesh of the wrists.
Watching her spin out of control, a cold, hard clarity settled over Cassius. The romantic notions of loyalty, the desperate hope that someone in this unhinged realm would suddenly act as a savior, evaporated entirely. He was utterly, completely alone. In this twisted court, trust was a luxury that brought nothing but an early grave. If he wanted to save this world, if he wanted to cure the deep, festering sickness that had corrupted everything from the king down to the dirt beneath their feet, he could not afford to die here. To figure out the grand design of this madness, he had to survive each passing second. He had to observe, adapt, and endure, no matter how badly his pride or his body was broken.
A plus point was the healing power that was loyal to him, yet.
His breath came in short, shallow hitches. Frightened, his last reserves of hope ground into the dust along with his uniform, he forced his body to move. His knees shook violently as he pushed his weight onto his palms. He stumbled twice, his palms sliding on the slick obsidian, but through the sheer, stubborn refusal to perish on the floor, he managed to hoist himself back to his feet. He stood before her, swaying slightly, his torn coat hanging in useless rags around his torso.
Florianthum’s laughter grew even more violent, rising to a fever pitch that threatened to tear her vocal cords. Looking at her, Cassius was broken to his last extent, remembering the same incident that happened with Alissa... the violent laugh that forever excluded her from his life.
Then, the true horror manifested.
The pale, familiar color of her eyes began to dissolve, bleeding outward from the pupils. In their place, a deep, unnatural dark blue fire ignited. The flames didn’t burn outward to scorch her lashes; instead, they swirled within the spheres of her eyes, a churning vortex of sapphire energy that cast an eerie, flickering glow across her tear-streaked face.
Cassius recognized that color instantly. It was the exact, mechanical hue she had possessed during the massive court battle earlier, when she had fought him with the cold, unfeeling precision of an automaton. The realization hit him like a physical blow: she wasn’t crazy. She wasn’t malicious. The specific shade of blue fire was a physical manifestation of a foreign will. It was a parasite, actively suppressing her true self and controlling her personality like a pilot operating a machine.
She was trapped inside her own skull, watching herself torture him.
Suddenly, her laughter choked. Florianthum lurched forward slightly, her hand flying to her own stomach as if a sudden, violent cramp had seized her abdomen, her fingers clawing at her robes to stop forced, hysterical noise bubbling up from her throat.
Seeing her physical distress break through the magic, Cassius threw caution away. He closed the distance between them in two large, lunging strides, his boots dragging through the dust. He reached out and grabbed her by the shoulders, his fingers digging firmly into the fabric of her garments to anchor her, to pull her back from the edge of the abyss.
"Florianthum!" he urged, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper that barely carried beyond the tight circle of their bodies.
He leaned close, his eyes locked onto the swirling blue fire in her gaze, trying to pierce through the magical veil to find the girl hidden beneath. He kept his pitch carefully modulated, pitched perfectly for her ears but designed to be lost to the empty spaces of the room. If there were hidden listeners in the shadows, or if someone was monitoring her senses from afar, he had to make his words sound small, unimportant, and non-threatening to the spell.
"Please, don’t kill me," he breathed, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw fear and fierce determination. "Understand me. Look at me, Florianthum. Fight it."
The blue fire within her eyes flared aggressively at his touch, the heat of the magic radiating against his cold palms, leaving them standing in the center of the dark hall, locked in a desperate struggle for her very mind.
She didn’t stop. The violent tremors wracking her body only intensified. The sapphire flames in her eyes flared with a dangerous, chaotic energy. Desperate to break the loop, Cassius pulled her closer without any thought of the consequences. The momentum sent her forward, her head hitting his chest with a dull thud. For a fragile, suspended heartbeat, they remained locked in that position, her trembling form tucked firmly into his arms.
The physical contact seemed to short-circuit the spell. The violent laugh stopped instantly, cutting off into a sharp, strangled gasp that died in her throat.
The silence returned, heavy and suffocating. Cassius raised a hand, his fingers trembling as he began to caress her frozen winter-blue and white strands of hair, trying to ground her. He leaned his head close to hers, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper. "Stop it... I will not be fine if you keep doing this."
His words were still carefully calculated. To the listening walls and whatever unseen entities monitored the chamber, it had to sound like a threat, a desperate plea from a defeated rival attempting to bargain for his life.
Suddenly, Florianthum stumbled.
The rigid, mechanical posture she had held throughout the confrontation shattered. She completely lost the balance that she had in her feet to stand, her limbs turning to lead. Deprived of all her strength, she started to fall into his arms, her body collapsing like a puppet whose strings had been cleanly severed.
Cassius realized this immediately, the sudden dead weight of her form pulling him forward. He knew he couldn’t shout or draw attention to the terrifying reality of what was happening to her. Driven by a furious, quiet concern, he instantly pulled her back from his chest to watch her face, searching for any sign of awareness.
Her eyes were closed. She looked completely unconscious, her features finally relaxed but deathly pale.
"Holy Bastard! Your Lord is a holy BASTAR---"
Cassius tried to shout, a controlled burst of rage meant to mock Vilucious to the walls while trying to shock her back to herself. But as her head lolled uselessly against his shoulder, he realized his plan had failed. He choked back the end of his sentence, biting down on the final word until his jaw ached.
Without wasting a single second, he shifted his weight and carried her up like a baby in his arms. Her legs floated in the air, dangling limply over his forearm, while her face pressed softly against his tattered chest.
He turned away from the gallery, his boots clicking softly as he started to walk carefully towards the royal bedroom where she had been resting earlier. Every step was an exercise in controlled panic, his eyes darting to the shadows, expecting a guard to step out at any moment.
As he reached the room, the heavy door creaked open to reveal the dim, plush interior. He carried her to the mattress, gently putting her down on the bed. He adjusted her legs on it, pulling the heavy blankets over her quiet form with a tenderness that felt entirely foreign in this brutal place.
The room was dead quiet. Assured that she was safe for the moment. Cassius turned around. As soon as he tried to find the corridor and at least call a few guards to look after her- a cold, sudden grip clamped around his wrist.
Someone grabbed his hands from behind.
It was Florianthum. Her eyes were wide open, their color perfectly normal hazel, devoid of the terrifying blue fire. She was awake, her breathing shallow but conscious.
Cassius turned instantly, sinking to the stone floor beside her bed in sheer relief. He gently cupped her pale cheek, holding her cold palms. "Florianthum," he breathed with concern.
Suddenly, her grip tightened with terrifying, crushing strength.
Cassius froze in confusion. Before he could speak, she wrenched her hand free and sliced it through the air in a sharp, horizontal gesture.
A brutal shockwave exploded from her fingertips. It tore across Cassius’s chest, shredding the remaining fabric of his coat and ripping the skin beneath. The force threw him backward onto the hard floor.
Gasping for air through swimming vision, he looked up at the bed. Florianthum stared back down at him, her face completely expressionless. Within her wide eyes, the royal dark blue fire burned once again.
