The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 33: Enter the Traitor: A Fallen Hero’s DefeatCassius didn’t move. He stood in the center of the vast marble floor, his wounded wrist dripping that thick, unnaturally dark purple blood onto the white stone. It made a slow, deliberate tap... tap... tap against the floor. At the base of Lord Vilucious’s heavy, metallic-rimmed boots, the white cat remained flat on her back, her spine arched in that deeply unsettling display of absolute submission, her slit-pupil eyes locked onto her master.
Vilucious looked down at the creature, then up at Cassius. The shock on the Lord’s face sloughed away, replaced instantly by a cold, curdled malice that deformed his features. The restored golden wings behind him thrummed with a low, majestic vibration, casting a sickeningly brilliant halo over his silhouette. He didn’t just regain his footing; he regained his absolute authority.
Cassius blinked. It was a single, slow drag of his eyelids, a brief fraction of a second to recalculate the variables.
Before his eyes could even open fully, the order tore from Lord Vilucious’s throat. It wasn’t a panicked scream anymore. It was a freezing, venomous command that seemed to drop the temperature of the entire hall.
"Strip the flesh from his frame," Vilucious hissed, his finger snapping forward to point directly at Cassius’s chest. "Bring me his bones."
The vanguard didn’t hesitate. The heavy, metallic scraping of their boots against the granite floor restarted in a violent staccato. Crossbows were raised in unison, the mechanical clack-clack-clack of strings being drawn back echoing off the high glass windows. The King’s personal soldiers shifted their weight, preparing to descend the stairs like a wave of iron and steel.
Yet, before a single boot could cross the threshold of the inner court, a sound escaped Cassius.
It wasn’t a gasp. It wasn’t a plea. It was a low, airy murmur that drifted out of his mouth like a lazy puff of winter breath. With an almost offensive casualness, he slid both of his hands deep into the high pockets of his dark outfit, slouching his shoulders just a fraction.
"Here we go again," he whispered.
Then, the air around Cassius fractured.
A deep, guttural groan tore from somewhere inside his chest, though his lips remained closed. From the edges of his eyelids, a thick, pitch-black liquid began to well up, completely swallowing the whites of his eyes until they were nothing but two empty, void-like abysses staring back at the throne. The physical toll was instantaneous- the veins along his neck bulged, turning a dark, bruised violet against his skin.
He didn’t pull his hands from his pockets. Instead, he simply shifted his weight as the dark purple blood from his scratched wrist began to pour faster, running down the fabric of his trousers and pooling at his heels. The black liquid from his eyes and the unnatural purple blood from his wound didn’t just drip; they rushed toward each other, colliding on the cold marble floor.
The moment the two fluids touched, they ignited into something volatile. A thick, viscous, bubbling mass erupted outward, hissing as it corroded the pristine marble. It smelled of sulfur, ancient damp earth, and raw, unfiltered arcane power. This was his original magic—the true, heavy fluid that Cassius had kept buried beneath layers of deception.
Thwang!
The first volley of crossbow bolts cut through the air. A dozen steel-tipped shafts, fired with enough force to pierce solid iron plating, whistled directly toward his head and torso.
Cassius didn’t just dodge; he vanished.
To the guards, it looked as if he had simply dissolved into a streak of purple light. In reality, he moved with a sickeningly fluid speed, his body twisting at unnatural angles as the first three bolts hissed past his ears, close enough to clip the loose strands of his hair. He broke into a dead sprint straight toward Lord Vilucious, his boots barely making a sound against the floor.
Thwang! Thwang!
More bolts followed, a relentless rain of iron meant to pin him to the floorboards. Cassius didn’t slow down. As a bolt flew directly at his knee, a tendril of the dark purple viscous fluid whipped upward from the trail he left behind, wrapping around the iron shaft mid-air and violently jerking it off course. The bolt shattered against a nearby pillar, showering the floor with stone chips.
He was moving straight like a hero breaking through a siege, his gaze locked entirely on Vilucious’s pale face.
The dark purple mass surged upward like a cresting wave, instantly splitting into three separate, towering figures. These weren’t solid constructs; they were shifting, faceless monoliths of pure, heavy liquid, their surfaces bubbling and reforming every second.
The first fluid figure crashed directly into the left flank of the vanguard. The impact wasn’t a clean strike—it was a heavy, suffocating weight. The liquid wrapped around the guards’ shields, seeping into the joints of their armor, and violently hurled four full-grown men backward into the stone pillars. The sound of their plate armor buckling against the granite echoed through the hall.
The second figure elongated, transforming into a wicked, multi-limbed mass of tendrils that swept across the floor, knocking the legs out from under the approaching spearmen. The air was filled with the frantic clatter of discarded weapons and the groans of injured soldiers.
Cassius himself kept moving through the center of the clearing his magic had carved. A commander of the vanguard, a massive man clad in blackened steel, stepped directly into his path, swinging a massive broadsword downward with enough force to cleave a horse in two.
Cassius didn’t even blink his void-black eyes. He simply pivoted his heel. The blade missed his shoulder by a millimeter, embedding itself deeply into the marble floor. Before the commander could pull the weapon free, the third fluid figure materialized right behind him, forming a massive, liquid fist that slammed into the center of the soldier’s back, launching him across the room like a ragdoll.
The path to Lord Vilucious was clearing, foot by bloody foot.
The fluid figures scattered the final line of heavy infantry. Broken shields and shattered spears littered the marble floor.
Lord Vilucious stood in a dramatic composure as his fists closed, watching his entire elite army collapse so effortlessly. Inside, his rage was at the next level. He tightened his fists so hard that his leather gloves strained under the pressure. Yet, his expression remained that of a fearless ruler. A dark, dramatic amusement danced across his face, as if he were watching a grand performance.
He slowly raised his arm and swung his gloved hand forward to point directly at Cassius.
As soon as he did this, something unexpected happened.
Vermonia, his pristine white cat, sprinted just like a flash across the blood-slicked stone. She moved with supernatural speed straight toward Cassius.
This scene was completely unexpected to Cassius. Reacting instantly, he tried to capture the cat with his dark purple magical fluid. Viscous tendrils shot up from the floorboards to snap shut around her. But Vermonia was too fast. She twisted mid-air with impossible agility, zipping left and right. Cassius’s heavy fluid slammed into empty air, failing to match her extreme speed and dodge technique. She slipped right through the trap, closing the distance in a heartbeat.
Cassius was about to get trapped completely as the cat jumped over his face with its fastest reflex. The white blur expanded in his vision, razor-sharp claws extended to shred his eyes. But on the spot, his dark purple liquid finally caught the cat as soon as she was about to land on his face. The viscous fluid rushed upward in a desperate, violent surge, making a shield between his face and the cat. The heavy purple mass hardened instantly, freezing the feline momentum inches from his nose.
Yet, this wasn’t a triumph of Cassius because more unexpected things happened.
As soon as the dark purple liquid was engulfing the cat in its capture, a sharp, piercing sound tore through the air.
Slushhh-
A small piece of blade came flying from the entrance of the room, cutting through the heavy atmosphere with lethal precision. The projectile hit the viscous liquid directly, breaking it into drops, shattering the magical shield into a spray of useless purple droplets and freeing Vermonia.
Cassius’s eyes widened, the absolute shock breaking his concentration. The deep void-black color dissolved, and his eyes reverted to normal human eyes as soon as this happened. The connection to his original power was severed in an instant. A single syllable came out of his mouth, slowly, as his acceptance of defeat.
"This can’t-"
He never finished the sentence. Without the shield to protect him, the cat landed perfectly on his face. The impact was sudden and heavy, knocking Cassius directly on his back onto the white part of the polished marble floor. The back of his skull hit the hard stone with a sickening crack, leaving him pinned beneath the pristine animal.
The sound of Cassius hitting the floor was followed by a heavy, suffocating silence. The dark purple fluid that had dominated the room just moments ago now lay inert, dissolving into harmless stains on the white stone.
A familiar feminine voice sought all the attention, coming from the entrance:
"My precious Lord, thanks for giving me this highest-ranking opportunity forever."
The voice was calm yet bold and dramatic, echoing flawlessly off the high, vaulted ceilings of the ruined hall. Every head turned toward the doorway as someone stepped forward, completely shifting the tension in the room.
