The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 52: Possessive, My Lord: Waking under Dark RoyaltyThe heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off the last of the gray morning sky and sealing Cassius into the suffocating dark of the imperial underbelly.
The guards didn’t carry him gently. They dragged his bare feet through the cold grime of the descent, his heels scraping helplessly against the rough, uneven stones. Every jagged edge of masonry bit into his skin, leaving a wet trail of dark fluid and filth behind him.
Ever since his teeth had pierced Florianthum’s skin, a sudden, overwhelming rush of her blood memory had slammed into his consciousness. Most of it remained a blurry, chaotic haze in his mind- secrets he couldn’t fully unwrap yet; but one sharp, instinctual detail had locked into place with absolute certainty.
As they dragged him past a narrow, low-arched drainage alley halfway down the corridor, a pair of sharp, luminous yellow eyes blinked out from the shadows.
It was a sleek, white snow cat. Vermonia.
The ruthless king’s personal pet, a striking, ghost-white creature allowed to roam the deepest cracks of the castle. But the fleeting, unrevealed piece of blood memory now whispering in Cassius’s mind told him a completely different story.
Cassius paused, his bare toes digging into the slick mud of the floor to anchor himself. Looking at the white cat against the dark stone, his lips parted. He forced a dry, raspy whisper through his cracked lips, intoning three distinct digits pulled straight from that hidden memory:
"Zero... nine... zero..."
Vermonia’s ears twitched. For a fraction of a second, the cold, vacant stare of the palace pet vanished, replaced by a flicker of sharp recognition. The assistant soldier immediately yanked the chains, spinning around with his hand on his sword hilt.
"The hell are you muttering about, freak?"
The other guards whipped around, pikes raised, scanning the dark, slick walls of the alley. The torches flickered, casting long, nervous shadows, but the ledge was already completely empty.
Vermonia had melted back into the cracks like a patch of winter snow.
"There’s nothing there," a guard muttered, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his forehead. They shoved him forward again, harder this time. Cassius let them push him, his bleeding, bare feet sliding across the stone, a faint, cold satisfaction settling into his chest. The numbers weren’t madness.
They were a trigger, even if the deeper truth of what he saw in the blood memory remained locked away in the dark.
At the end of the corridor, the guards unlocked the heavy iron grate of the deepest cell and threw him inside. Cassius hit the damp straw, the iron chains rattling violently against the stone floor. The door slammed shut behind him, the heavy iron bolt sliding home with a definitive thud.
"Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. Literally."
A mocking, familiar voice echoed from the dim corner of the cell.
Sitting on an overturned wooden bucket, lazily swirling a filthy straw broom between his knees, was Fukuro. The dungeon sweeper, Cassius’s old mate, and one of the few pure humans left in the lower levels who still dared to speak without a filter. He leaned forward, cupped his hands around his mouth, and gave a loud, theatrical boo.
"Boo!" Fukuro jeered, a crooked smirk splitting his dirt-streaked face.
"Terrible performance out there. I’ve seen better fights between stray dogs in the gutter. They really did a number on you, didn’t they?"
Cassius didn’t move from the damp straw. He just rolled his head to the side, his dark grey eyes fixed on the sweeper.
Fukuro’s theatrical smirk lasted for exactly three seconds. As the echo of his mocking boo faded into the damp masonry, his gaze traveled down from Cassius’s face, past the heavy iron chains, and locked onto the left side of his torso.
The broom slipped from Fukuro’s hand. It hit the stone floor with a dull, hollow clatter.
The color drained from the sweeper’s face so fast it left his skin looking as sickly and grey as the dungeon walls. He scrambled off the overturned wooden bucket, his knees hitting the dirt as he threw himself forward, skidding across the cell floor until he was hovering over the straw.
"Bloody hell..." Fukuro breathed, his voice dropping from a confident jeer to a raw, terrified whisper. His hands hovered over Cassius, trembling, terrified to touch him.
"... Your arm. I cannot... Watch this again... Do something to it!"
Cassius let out a low, dry wheeze that might have been a laugh if his lungs weren’t so tight.
"Left it in the courtyard. The Lord Bastard wanted a souvenir."
"Are you mental?!" Fukuro hissed, his fingers gripping his own hair in sheer, unadulterated panic. He stared at the jagged, torn flesh of the shoulder stump, then down at Cassius’s bare, bleeding feet.
"You’re a bird! How the hell are you still breathing? Why aren’t you dead?!"
Instead of answering, Cassius simply closed his eyes and let his body go entirely limp against the rough ground, ignoring Fukuro entirely.
Then, the air in the cell began to warp.
Around the raw, bloodless stump of his left shoulder, a sudden, deep violet hue bled into the darkness, thick and glowing with a soft, internal luminescence. The vapor rose from his torn clothes, weaving through the heavy iron links of his chains like a live current.
As the mist expanded, it began to crystallize, fracturing into tiny, glittering particles that floated lazily through the stagnant atmosphere- a swarm of brilliant purple specs dancing in a localized halo over Cassius’s resting frame.
Fukuro froze mid-sentence, scrambling backward so fast his heels dug into the loose dirt, his back slamming violently against the iron bars of the cell door. His wide, bloodshot human eyes tracked the swirling, glittering purple magic as it settled over Cassius.
"Right," Fukuro stammered, his voice climbing an octave, his entire frame shaking as he stared at the glowing, unbothered monstrosity sleeping in the straw.
"Right. Splendid. You’re not dying. You’re just... turning into a bloody glowing night-light. Fantastic."
"If you decide to explode into bats or something, please give me a five-second warning. My heart can’t take this slum-rat drama anymore."
Cassius didn’t offer a warning. He just lay there, perfectly still, letting the glittering purple aura mask his features as the darkness of the lower cells swallowed the sound of Fukuro’s nervous whimpering.
------
Far above the damp, weeping stones of the lower pits, the heavy gloom of the dungeon gave way to the oppressive luxury of the imperial quarters. The air here was entirely different... perfumed with expensive oils, crushed lavender, and the faint, sweet scent of burning cedarwood.
Deep within the heart of the palace, the royal bedroom was silent save for the rhythmic, crackling sigh of a massive marble fireplace.
Heavy velvet drapes, dyed the color of dried blood, hung from the high, vaulted ceiling, completely blocking out the morning glare and casting the massive chamber into an artificial, perpetual twilight. Elaborate gold trim traced the edges of the dark wood paneling, throwing long, distorted reflections across the polished obsidian floor.
On the expansive, silk-sheeted bed, Florianthum lay perfectly still. Her heavy silver plate armor had been stripped away by the handmaidens, leaving her in a thin, white linen tunic that showed the tight, immaculate contours of her body. Her face was deathly pale, looking almost translucent against the dark satin pillows.
The long, tangled strands of her snow-white hair spilled across the bed like spilled silk, still bearing faint, stiffened traces of the courtyard’s violence. Her breathing was slow, deep, and heavily forced, the terrifying midnight blue completely gone from her eyes, leaving her features in an exhausted, fragile peace.
Beside her, propped up against the plush headboard, lay Lord Vilucious.
He was sleeping lightly, his breathing a barely audible whisper, yet his presence remained cold, dominant, and deeply possessive even in rest. The fine silk blankets were pulled up to his chest, but his posture was rigid. Without opening his eyes, he reached out with a long, elegant hand.
His large golden rings, engraved with the cruel crests of his lineage, caught the faint, dying glint of the firelight as he buried his pale fingers deep into her white hair.
He caressed her scalp with a slow, heavy cadence- a rhythmic, manual display of ownership. He held her close to his side, anchoring his prize to the mattress, entirely blind to the hidden thread that had already been pulled down in the dirt below.
The palace around them slept in a false sense of absolute victory, completely unaware that the countdown to their ruin had already begun.
Florianthum’s eyelids remained shut, her breathing heavy and engineered to match the rhythm of deep trauma. But beneath the dark veil of her lashes, her mind was razor-sharp, tracking every movement in the suffocating twilight of the royal bedchamber.
The room smelled of crushed lavender, expensive oils, and the heavy, copper-laced perfume of old royalty.
Beside her, Vilucious was no longer merely resting. The quiet, light sleep of the monarch had shifted into a dark, wakeful fascination.
His long, pale fingers slid down from the tangled mass of her snow-white hair, trailing along the line of her collarbone with a slow, agonizing friction.
The heavy golden rings on his hand scraped lightly against her skin, cold and precise, until his thumb finally pressed directly against the center of her neck.
Right over the jagged, sealed puncture where Cassius’s teeth had torn into her.
A dark, terrifying possessiveness rolled off him, thick enough to warp the air in the chamber.
