Lyra stared down at the bowl of steaming roast meat, fresh white bread, and rich vegetable stew with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her hands trembled violently as she held the wooden spoon. For years—what felt like a lifetime of endless, starving decades in the cold filth of the slums—she had survived on moldy crusts and murky puddle water. Now, sitting in the warm, private washroom adjoining Madame Vespera’s vault, the rich aroma alone made her eyes well with uncontainable tears.
She ate desperately, savoring every hot, savory bite until her stomach was finally full. Afterward, she stepped into the hot bath prepared by Vespera’s servants. As the warm water washed away years of accumulated grime, soot, and ash, her tangled ash-grey hair transformed into a cascading sheet of brilliant silver silk. Stepping out, she dressed in the clean, tailored blue tunic and black breeches provided for her. When she looked in the cracked wall mirror, her jaw dropped. The dirt-streaked beggar girl was completely gone. In her place stood a young woman of breathtaking, ethereal beauty, with porcelain skin, striking violet eyes, and a voluptuous, perfectly sculpted figure that filled out the tailored clothes to perfection.
Meanwhile, inside the quiet darkness of the archive vault, Arthur sat motionless at a central mahogany table.
Stacks of ancient, leather-bound tomes, illuminated scrolls, and hand-copied grimoires surrounded him like towering battlements. For fifteen straight hours without a single second of rest, Arthur’s mind operated at a terrifying, inhuman efficiency. Having commanded vast geopolitical networks and global financial systems in his past life, his cognitive processing speed was light-years ahead of ordinary humans.
He absorbed the complex, arcane theories of mana manipulation, rune weaving, core compression, and elemental transmutation as if he were simply reviewing familiar financial spreadsheets. Where ancient sages saw mystical mysteries, Arthur saw logical equations and scientific laws. He identified efficiency flaws in centuries-old casting formulas, redrew inefficient magical circles in his head, and instantly perfected the underlying logic of high-tier magic.
By the time the fifteenth hour passed, Arthur closed the final book on high-tier spatial mechanics with a soft, heavy thud. He had devoured, processed, and completely mastered the entirety of Vespera’s lifelong collection.
"Arthur...?"
A soft, hesitant voice broke the silence of the vault. Arthur turned his head, his eyes heavy with mental fatigue.
The moment his gaze locked onto Lyra, Arthur’s sharp, calculating mind completely short-circuited.
She stepped out into the dim mana-light, her long silver hair glowing softly, her violet eyes shining with timid warmth. The contrast between her delicate, angelic face and her immensely voluptuous, curving body was utterly stunning. For a fleeting second, the former sovereign master of global economics felt his pulse spike, his chest tightening as his young, nineteen-year-old body reacted to the breathtaking vision standing before him.
She’s... unbelievable, Arthur thought, his inner composure momentarily fracturing before he forcibly pulled his emotional walls back up with an iron grip.
Before he could speak, the heavy vault doors swung open. Madame Vespera walked in, her crimson eyes scanning the room. She halted dead in her tracks, her jaw slackening as she took in the sheer mountain of open, thoroughly read grimoires surrounding Arthur.
"This is impossible..." Vespera whispered, stepping forward with deep suspicion and shock. "You’ve opened every master-level tome in my private collection! Boy, do not play games with me. It takes legendary archmages decades to comprehend even two of those texts!"
"The casting formulas in your library are inefficient," Arthur said calmly, standing up from his chair without a hint of exhaustion. "They rely on unnecessary verbal incantations and waste nearly sixty percent of ambient mana during atmospheric compression."
Vespera’s eyes narrowed. "Nonsense! Those are the foundational texts of the Imperial Academy!"
"Allow me to demonstrate," Arthur replied smoothly.
He lifted his right hand. He didn’t chant, nor did he draw a magic circle. Instead, through pure, microscopic mana manipulation, Arthur restructured the surrounding atmospheric static.
A orb of blinding, deep-blue plasma materialized instantly above his open palm. It did not emit heat outward; instead, it compressed violently, warping the air around it in a perfect gravitational pocket. With a subtle flick of his fingers, Arthur split the plasma orb into seven distinct, perfectly stable elemental spheres—fire, ice, lightning, wind, earth, light, and shadow—each orbiting his hand like a miniature solar system, completely silent and under absolute control.
It was a display of magic manipulation that bypassed the known laws of the world. It was a level of execution far above any living sage, grandmaster, or high-born matriarch. He hadn’t just used magic; he had reinvented its baseline efficiency.
Vespera stumbled back, clutching her chest, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Pure, breathless ecstasy and overwhelming awe flooded her crimson eyes. Looking at Arthur—standing tall, bathed in the ethereal glow of seven elemental forces, looking at her with absolute, unyielding coldness—she fell completely in love. The sheer thrill of standing before a true, absolute monarch made her blood run hot.
"Incredible..." Vespera gasped, her voice trembling with intense affection and excitement for the future he had promised. "You... you truly are a king in hiding..."
Compelled by an intense, burning desire, Vespera stepped close, her voluptuous form brushing against his chest. She leaned in, her full lips hovering inches from his, her crimson eyes gleaming with explicit temptation.
"Come to my private quarters, Arthur," Vespera purred seductively, her fingers resting lightly on his chest. "Forget the silver. Stay with me tonight. Be my master, my partner, my everything. I will give you my entire syndicate, my wealth, my body... everything you desire."
Arthur didn’t flinch. He didn’t blush or lean in. With a swift, smooth movement, he extinguished the floating elemental spheres and stepped back, breaking her hold completely.
"I am here as a business partner, Madame Vespera," Arthur stated, his tone icy, sharp, and completely unbothered by her physical allure. "My future empire will not be built on cheap seduction or emotional entanglements. We have a contract: my strategy for your archive. The deal is concluded."
Vespera blinked, stunned by his immediate, absolute rejection, but her smile only grew wider and more enamored. A man who could reject her so effortlessly was a man truly worthy of ruling the world.
As Arthur turned and walked toward the exit, the female thugs and rogue mercenaries lining the dark underground street watched him pass. Word of his incredible exchange with Vespera had already spread. Dozens of hardened, dangerous women stared at him with shameless admiration, throwing seductive winks, whistling, and calling out desperate flirts, begging the handsome, terrifyingly powerful young prince to glance their way.
Arthur walked past them all, entirely unfazed, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
Behind him walked Lyra. Watching the gorgeous black-market boss and the dangerous female thugs fawn over Arthur sent a sharp, agonizing pang of jealousy straight through her heart. She looked down at her hands, her mind racing with turbulent, possessive thoughts.
He saved me... he looks at me like no one else exists, but all these powerful women want him, Lyra thought, her cheeks burning as she tightly clutched the hem of her new tunic, quickening her steps to stay right beside him. I won’t let them take him. I was the one who stayed by his side when he had nothing... I will become strong enough to stand next to him forever.
"Lyra," Arthur said softly, breaking her inner turmoil as they stepped out into the crisp morning air at the edge of the undercity. "Our foundation is laid. Now, we build."
