Leaving the cold mist of the undercity behind, Arthur and Lyra made their way back to the small stone room in the lower district slum. It was the same modest space they had left early that morning, but everything felt fundamentally different now.
For the first time since his reincarnation, the non-stop momentum slowed down. Arthur dropped his pack in the corner, unbuckled his leather gear, and breathed out a low, heavy sigh. Fifteen straight hours of intense mental processing in Vespera’s vault, followed by an immediate expedition into the Blackwood Forest and an encounter with an S-rank Griffin, had finally caught up to his physical body.
Lyra immediately set to work. Using a fraction of the silver coins they kept, she had picked up fresh linen blankets, soft tallow candles, and a basket of warm bread, roasted meats, and sweet fruit on their way back.
She lit two candles, filling the dim room with a warm, amber glow, and arranged the food neatly over a clean cloth on the wooden table.
"Arthur... please eat," Lyra said softly, her voice carrying a sweet, gentle warmth as she set a wooden plate in front of him. "You’ve worked without a second of rest since you woke up."
"Thank you, Lyra," Arthur replied, sitting down across from her.
They ate together in comfortable quiet. For Lyra, sitting in a warm, dry room, enjoying rich meat and fresh bread alongside the boy who had rescued her from a lifetime of despair, felt like an impossible dream. She watched him across the flickering candlelight. Even in a simple, un-adorned linen tunic, Arthur carried an aura of absolute composure. He wasn’t the bitter, loud drunk who threw bottles; he was a silent titan who moved mountains without raising his voice.
After finishing his meal, Arthur pulled out a clean sheet of parchment he had taken from Vespera’s vault along with a quill. He immediately began drafting plans—drawing up intricate organizational structures, supply-chain flowcharts, and currency exchange mechanisms designed to deploy their five hundred gold crests at dawn.
Lyra sat on the edge of the new mattress, her knees pulled tight against her chest, her violet eyes completely glued to him. Her heart did soft, unpredictable flips every time the candlelight caught the sharp edge of his jaw or the intense, calculating depth of his eyes.
He rejected Madame Vespera effortlessly... Lyra thought, her cheeks growing warm as her mind raced back to the undercity. He ignored all those stunning, powerful women in the dark district. He doesn’t care about their wealth or their beauty. But... he keeps me right beside him. He calls me his manager. He trusts me.
Her hands tightened around her tunic as a sudden, reckless urge bloomed inside her chest.
I don’t want to just be the timid girl who follows behind him, she thought, her breath hitching as her pulse skyrocketed. I want him to look at me... really look at me. Not as a helpless orphan he saved, but as a woman.
Hours passed in quiet focus. By midnight, Arthur finally set his quill down, rolled up his strategic blueprints, and blew out the primary candle. The room fell into a soft, shadowy gloom illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight filtering through the cracked window shutter.
"That’s enough for tonight," Arthur said softly, stretching his tired shoulders. He walked over to the single mattress, which was now lined with clean, thick woolen blankets, and lay down on his side, closing his eyes to rest his exhausted mind.
Lyra stood frozen in the dark. Her heart was beating so violently against her ribs she felt lightheaded. She took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to summon every ounce of courage in her body.
Slowly, hesitatingly, she crawled onto the mattress beside him.
The bed sank under her weight. Arthur didn’t move, his breathing steady and even in the quiet room.
Lyra’s face burned like fire in the dark. She swallowed hard, her mind screaming in embarrassment, but she forced herself forward. Remembering how the alluring women in the undercity flitted and pressed themselves toward him, she decided to take her own bold step.
She carefully slid closer, until her front was pressed against his back.
The heat radiating from his frame was intoxicating. Lyra held her breath, her hands trembling violently as she reached out, gently wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. She pulled herself tight against him, pressing her full, voluptuous curves flush against his back, resting her blushing face against the fabric between his shoulder blades.
She wanted to whisper something seductive, something bold, something that would make him turn around and look at her with the same intense fire he used against monsters—but her timid, shy nature instantly betrayed her.
Her mind went completely blank. Her mouth felt bone-dry, and all that came out was a tiny, squeaky gasp before she buried her burning face directly into his tunic, completely paralyzed by her own embarrassment, unable to move a single inch further.
She had failed her own attempt at seduction before it even started.
However, what Lyra didn’t realize was that Arthur was wide awake.
The moment her soft, warm body pressed firmly against his back, every single analytical, calculating thought in Arthur’s head instantly evaporated.
He was a thirty-eight-year-old hardened CEO in his past life, but his current physical vessel was that of a healthy, nineteen-year-old young man. The sheer proximity of Lyra’s soft, stunning form—her sweet, clean scent filling his lungs, her delicate arms wrapped tightly around his waist, and the undeniable warmth of her lush figure pressing directly into his frame—sent an electric, overwhelming shockwave straight through his pulse.
His blood ran scorching hot. His heart hammered against his ribs like a war drum. For all his strategic brilliance and absolute iron willpower, Arthur found himself completely, utterly flustered by the shy, trembling girl clinging to his back.
She has no idea what she’s doing... Arthur thought, his mind racing wildly as he stared wide-eyed into the dark wall, his entire body locked in rigid discipline as he forcibly restrained himself from turning around.
He didn’t move. He didn’t push her away, nor did he make a move to cross the line. He simply lay there, his pulse throbbing in his ears, completely captivated and undone by her timid boldness.
Outside, the cool night breeze rustled the slum alleys, but inside the small stone room, a long, quiet, and intensely restless night continued under the silent moon.
