"Is it alright for us to be seen together like this?" Irene asked once the shuttle was high enough, glancing at him from beneath her lashes.
"Why wouldn’t it be?"
"Well..."
She looked down at her hands, fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve. "You and my sister are still engaged. I wouldn’t want her to be hurt because of me."
Soren’s expression softened. He reached over and gently took her hand in his. "You don’t have to worry about that. It won’t be long before I’m no longer her fiancée."
With the annulment papers already signed and ready to be submitted, Soren didn’t have to worry about this troublesome matter. Thinking about how his mother quickly called him about annulling his engagement with Aisha the moment he left the contaminated zone, his irritation surged.
Everyone was rushing him. He didn’t like that he was still being treated like a child.
So, this annulment should bring everyone great joy and relief, right?
Irene couldn’t stop her heart from beating faster the moment she heard his words. It took her a long time to get where she wanted, and now that the prince has started courting her, it will only be a matter of time before she’ll become his betrothed.
But thinking about the strange look on Soren’s face earlier, she couldn’t help but feel slightly worried.
"Speaking of which, I didn’t see her at the gate with you. Did she go home already?" Soren asked her, voicing out what he couldn’t do earlier.
Irene felt her stomach twist.
Forcing a smile on her lips, she replied, "I don’t know where my sister went. I told her to wait for me, but she must still be feeling upset."
"Upset?" Soren was intrigued by this. Was it because of their annulment?
Irene didn’t know what he was thinking inside his head, but she answered with a slightly worried expression on her face. "She just got reassigned to a lower class. Earlier at lunch, I saw a fight between Reign and that D-rank in Class 7-D."
"That’s not unusual," Soren shrugged. "Sentinels get into scuffles all the time. They should be fine after."
"Mm," Irene nodded in agreement. But a second later, she opened her mouth and hesitated to speak.
"Was there something else?"
"I... I happened to see my sister there, too." Irene continued feeding Soren with what had happened during lunch. "She just watched it happen in front of her and didn’t even help Reign. We were classmates with him since we were young. But sister, she... she just waited until the other sentinel broke his nose before stopping it."
Soren was shocked to hear this from her.
He wasn’t there, so he didn’t see it personally. However, he trusted Irene wouldn’t lie to him. And from what she had just said, it looked like Aisha had instigated the fight from the start and made the two sentinels beat each other.
He also agreed that it was too cold for Aisha not to help Reign, whom they’ve known since they were younger.
Soren was reminded of the fact that Aisha was also like this in the past. When everyone treated her kindly and friendly, she would turn away from them and coldly tell them not to disturb her. She even got into a fight with her friends before. He also witnessed her cursing at someone while proclaiming she’d make them regret it in the future.
He thought she had changed after seeing her demeanor at the hospital... but was he wrong?
"Your Highness, I’m really afraid of her." Irene clutched his sleeve and rubbed her fingers in circles. "What if... what if after the annulment, she’ll—"
"You don’t have to be afraid of her," Soren patted her hair and drew her closer to his arms. "I’ll make sure she won’t ever lay a hand on you."
It didn’t matter if it was Aisha or anyone else. He wouldn’t allow anyone to harm Irene, the woman whom he had chosen to be his future pair after she awakened her as an S-rank.
Irene closed her eyes, hiding the satisfied smile on her lips.
***
By the time Irene returned to the mansion, the sky had long turned dark. Her mood was lighter than earlier, and she was even chattering with the servants.
When she was about to return to the bedroom she shared with her mother, a young servant passed her in the hallway.
Suddenly, Irene had an idea crossing her mind.
She approached the maid and touched her forearm, while seemingly asking out of curiosity, "Is my sister home already?"
The maid blinked, confused for a moment, before answering, "No. The eldest miss hasn’t arrived yet."
Irene smiled wider.
She took off the bracelet her mother had given her as a present that morning and gave it to the maid.
Holding the maid’s hands, she placed the bracelet on it. Then she pleasantly said, "Hide this under my sister’s pillow."
The maid glanced down at the bracelet in her hand with dull eyes before turning around, heading toward Aisha’s bedroom.
Watching her go, Irene giggled.
However, just as she released a peal of laughter, a sharp throb split through her skin.
She hurriedly pressed a hand to her temple, her hand reaching for the wall to support her as she felt suffocated.
Feeling a wet sensation under her nose, she wiped it away.
And sure enough, blood stained her hand.
"Tsk," she clicked her tongue as she weakly stood beside the wall.
She reached her limit way too quickly this time.
Because of that wench, she used her ability to manipulate people’s minds a few times already. From yesterday till today. She had already used it on her mother twice, her friends, and the maid just now.
A total of four times. That was the most she could do in a month.
S-rank guides are higher and incomparable to other guides for another reason. It was that they can twist a person’s mind into believing, seeing, and doing what they wanted.
But not everyone could do this. It takes a lot of practice and affinity for manipulation. And it can drive them mad from just using it and the pain that comes as a backlash of this unique ability.
Besides, there’s a limit to how much they can do it to a person and how strong their opponent is.
Still, it was fortunate she used it just now.
She can’t wait to see what Aisha will look like once she comes home.
