He absolutely had no idea why Aisha wanted this.
If it was solely because she knew about his affair with her little sister, Soren could understand she would feel upset about it. But like his father, he would eventually have other women to marry to strengthen his hold over other nobles, so if she didn’t like it, she’d just have to accept it.
Besides, what made him so sure she would be because she loved him?
But was he wrong, after all?
"You really didn’t know?" he repeated his question as if Aisha would give him the answer he wanted.
Unfortunately, Aisha wouldn’t allow him that satisfaction. She gave him a look devoid of all emotion before lowering her gaze. Tears suddenly sprang up in her eyes and started to fall down like crystals.
Soren stood frozen as he saw her cry. The rage he had felt when she exposed his affair to the world vanished, replaced by the sudden urge to take her into his arms and comfort her.
Seeing her cry so beautifully aroused him. No wonder so many men, however young or old they are, would stare at him in envy. It was all because he had someone who could look so tempting even when she was in tears.
At this moment, Soren completely forgot that today was his annulment ceremony, dazedly staring at Aisha.
On the other hand, Aisha wiped away the tears in her eyes and moved her gaze away to look at her hand. Thankfully, her mascara didn’t smudge on her finger.
To think dust would enter her eyes the moment the prince had asked her once again was truly fortunate, as she didn’t want to answer him.
How long till this ceremony ends?
Honestly, she hoped it would be over already. She had a lot of things to do. She needed to train for the duel with the other students and cleanse the rest of the meat she bought from the Association market. Anshel’s monster carcass was stored inside her storage bag, and she needed to verify which meat it belonged to. And her two spiritual beasts needed to be fed.
And most importantly, standing here had drained her. It was much better for her to cut through mutated people and animals, crawl in dirt and mud, and fight endlessly.
I’m hungry.
"Today, we will put an end to His Highness Soren and Lady Aisha’s engagement!" An elder of the council stood up and took over the stage. "Since they have already signed the annulment papers, they only need to swear upon their names and identities as a Guide and Sentinel revoke it!"
"Both of you come and step forward."
Aisha cheered inwardly. It was finally going to end, and she could go back to feed herself and her spiritual beasts.
Soren, however, showed some hesitation. After seeing how alluring Aisha had looked in front of him, he couldn’t seem to bring himself to do as he was told.
But under the watchful eyes of the people inside the imperial hall, he couldn’t bring himself to say he wanted to rethink breaking off their engagement.
If Aisha knew what he was thinking, the emperor would have to call the imperial guards back to restrain her, as she would’ve beaten him to a pulp before he could think of changing his mind.
"I, Aisha Novalis, revoke my engagement with His Highness, Prince Soren Valerius. I swear upon my honor and identity as a D-rank Guide to never touch, speak, or guide him for eternity."
A stone in the middle of the wall behind the throne lit up where two statues were erected. The stone was embedded in the hands of a figure that represented a Guide.
It was now Soren’s turn.
Soren looked at Aisha for a long moment before he forced himself to speak.
"I, Soren Valerius, revoke my... my engagement with Aisha Novalis."
The elder looked at him and lowered his voice. "Your Highness, you forgot to say your vow."
Soren was torn and struggled with his vow. On one hand, he didn’t want to completely cut off his relationship with Aisha. He needed to at least keep her somewhere he could see her and ensure that she would remain alone so he could take her when she needed someone.
And on the other hand, he had to swear to complete the ceremony.
The elder urged him once again. His mother also shot him a look for him not to think or do anything stupid.
"I swear upon my honor and identity as an S-rank Sentinel."
In the end, he only vowed to revoke his engagement with Aisha, never swearing anything about not touching or speaking to her.
Aisha noticed and felt like slapping him. But it didn’t matter since she had her ways to make him unable to do any of those things he didn’t swear.
However—
"Your Highness, that won’t be enough."
Zeke, who had been silent and letting the ceremony flow as it was, stepped forward.
"It is dishonorable for a Sentinel not to complete your vow."
Naturally, he noticed Soren’s intention. Soren’s hesitation isn’t new in his eyes. There were quite a few Sentinels he had seen at the Association who regretted leaving their Guides.
Aisha hadn’t expected Zeke to step in, wondering what he was thinking.
She wanted to tell him it didn’t matter since the prince would have no chance of even getting close to her, but it seemed that his words and presence alone were far more effective than she thought.
She saw Soren’s face turn gray as he stared at Zeke, then at her. He did it a few times, looking like a broken toy whose screws loosened at the neck with its head swinging side to side.
Before long, she heard the prince speak once again with a trace of anger.
"I swear upon my honor and identity as an S-rank Sentinel to never talk to or touch her!"
The statue representing a Sentinel also had its stone lit after his vow.
Aisha felt satisfied with this, too.
After this, she didn’t have to deal with a prince whose mood swings were worse than a pregnant woman.
