Gray drifted through the dark water, his serrated bell cutting silently through the current. Around him, the terrain began to shift. The familiar black sand gradually gave way to scattered coral formations and ridges of pale stone. He moved with Hollow Cloak active, his body little more than a faint shimmer against the abyss.

’If we move to another area,’ he said quietly, ’we might find a suitable body for you.’

Cindy’s voice stirred in his mind, cautious but curious.

"Isn’t that dangerous? We don’t know what’s out there."

Gray’s gaze swept the water ahead. Bioluminescent motes drifted past like suspended stars, their soft glow fading into the dark beyond. He angled toward a faint green light seeping from the mouth of a cave below.

’Yes... I’ll be careful,’ he said. ’With Hollow Cloak, I can avoid most unnecessary trouble. As long as no monster stronger than me detects us first.’

He descended slowly, slipping through the cave’s entrance. The green glow intensified as he moved deeper, painting the rough stone walls in hues of emerald and pale jade. The water here was warmer, carrying a faint mineral sweetness that lingered at the edge of his senses.

Inside, the cave opened into a vast underwater grotto.

Strange plants grew from the stone floor and walls. Their long, translucent fronds swayed gently even without a current, each surface dotted with tiny glowing buds. Small fish with silver-blue fins drifted between the stalks, unconcerned by his presence. The green light came from clusters of crystal embedded in the rock, pulsing slowly and steadily, as if the cave itself were dreaming in emerald.

The system stirred at the edge of his awareness.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: VERDANT HOLLOW]

"This is..." Cindy’s voice came soft, full of wonder. "It’s like another world..."

Gray moved deeper into the grotto, his tentacles brushing against a nearby plant. It quivered at his touch, releasing a soft cloud of green motes that swirled upward and vanished. The system flickered again, feeding information directly into his mind.

[FLORA IDENTIFIED: SPIRIT MOSS FERN]

« Analysis »

A luminous plant found only in mineral-rich underwater caverns. The Spirit Moss Fern absorbs ambient mana and converts it into a mild regenerative compound. When consumed or applied directly to wounds, it accelerates natural healing and restores a small amount of HP.

Gray plucked a frond and pressed it against a lingering scratch on his bell. The tissue tingled, then began to close.

’Useful,’ he murmured.

Cindy’s voice was soft, almost reverent. "This place... it’s so peaceful. I didn’t think the abyss had places like this."

Gray hovered near the center of the grotto, watching the silver fish drift in lazy spirals around him.

’We’ll rest here for a while,’ he said. ’And maybe we’ll find something good for you too.’

"Are you sure about this? This place could be another creature’s territory..." Cindy spoke with worry in her voice.

And then, from behind a cluster of glowing crystals, something shifted.

The creature emerged slowly, its body round and bristling with spines. It resembled a sea urchin, but massive, nearly two feet across. Each spine was pale white and needle-thin, radiating a faint, cold light. Where a normal urchin’s center might be, a single large eye stared directly at Gray, unblinking. Its iris was a deep, glossy black against the surrounding white.

The system flickered to life.

[PALE SENTINEL URCHIN — Level 31]

HP: 340 / 340

Threat Level: MODERATE

« Analysis »

A territorial echinoderm found in mineral-rich grottos and caverns. The Pale Sentinel Urchin is slow-moving but highly defensive. Its spines can be fired as projectiles and contain a paralytic toxin. The central eye can rotate independently, providing a near-360-degree field of vision.

Behavior: Aggressive toward intruders. It will not pursue prey beyond its territory but will attack anything that lingers within its claimed space.

Weakness: Vulnerable from below. The area beneath its body is unarmored and lacks spines. Slow to reorient after firing a spine volley.

"Gray... I don’t think we’re welcome here," Cindy said.

’Ahaha... yeah, I think I entered the wrong house. Sorry for disturbing you, Mr. Sea Urchin.’

Gray began to drift backward, keeping his movements slow and non-threatening. For a moment, it seemed like the creature might let him go.

Then the Pale Sentinel Urchin’s body split open.

The upper half of its spined shell folded back like a blooming flower, revealing row upon row of needle-like teeth lining a fleshy, circular maw. The central eye bulged outward, fixed on Gray with maddened intensity.

Then it screamed.

"Hriieeekkkkkk!!"

The shriek tore through the water, high and sharp like breaking crystal. Silver fish scattered in every direction, the plants quivered, and the green crystals pulsed faster, as if the entire cave flinched at the sound.

’...Or not.’ Gray said quietly, his body already turning back to face the creature.

The sea urchin closed its mouth and began circling Gray, its single eye fixed on him as if analyzing his every movement. Its spines twitched and quivered, ready to launch at any moment.

’It’s not charging,’ he noted. ’It’s waiting for me to move first.’

"Then don’t move," Cindy whispered. "Maybe it’ll let you leave."

’Too late for that. It screamed. You don’t scream at someone who’s allowed to leave.’

The urchin’s body shifted, and a volley of pale spines launched from its shell like needles loosed from a bow. Gray twisted aside, Flow State flaring as the water bent around him. The spines shot past, embedding deep into the stone wall behind him with sharp, wet cracks.

[SPINE VOLLEY — MISSED]

His position was still fresh in the creature’s senses. A second volley followed fast, the urchin retraining its eye on him with unnatural precision. Gray pulsed upward, felt the wind of a spine graze the very tip of one tentacle.

’Tch. Those aren’t random. It’s tracking me.’

A third volley came from a new direction, and that’s when Gray realized the creature had moved, slowly dragging itself across the stone with its lower spines, shifting its position between shots. It was herding him toward the corner of the grotto, where the walls narrowed and the glowing crystals cast too much light.

’It’s smarter than it looks.’

He stopped retreating. Instead, he dove forward, straight under the next volley, the spines passing just above his bell as he closed the distance. The urchin’s body split wider, its circular maw expanding as if to meet him.

But Gray chose a different angle entirely.

[SUBTERRANEAN AMBUSH — ACTIVATED]

He hit the grotto floor and vanished into the sand. The urchin’s eye swiveled downward, scanning the shifting sediment, but its body was too large and too slow to reorient. Gray felt its movements from below, each small shift of its lower spines pressing against the seafloor like fingertips.

Then he erupted.

His serrated bell tore upward, directly into the unarmored underside of the creature. The impact drove the urchin upward, flipping it onto its back, its pale spines thrashing against the empty water.

[SUBTERRANEAN AMBUSH — 78 DAMAGE]

[PALE SENTINEL URCHIN — HP: 262 / 340]

[STUN — 2 SECONDS]

The creature’s wail filled the grotto again, high and broken. Gray twisted in the water, coiling his tentacles beneath him, and pressed the advantage.

’Now I can use it.’

He fired Cavitation Pulse directly into the exposed underside.

[CAVITATION PULSE — 60 DAMAGE]

[PALE SENTINEL URCHIN — HP: 202 / 340]

Steam billowed through the water. The urchin’s body convulsed, its teeth gnashing at nothing. Gray drifted above it, his serrated bell humming with heat, watching the creature’s HP drain.

And then, the needle struck before Predator’s Instinct could even flicker.

A pale spine buried itself deep in Gray’s side, just below his bell margin. The pain was sharp and immediate, like a shard of ice driven through his flesh.

[-24 HP]

[PARALYSIS — 1 SECOND]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 876 / 900]

His body locked for a fraction of a moment. Just enough time for him to turn toward the grotto entrance.

There, framed by the glowing green crystals, more Pale Sentinel Urchins were squeezing through the opening. Two, three, then four more. Their central eyes swiveled and locked onto him with unbroken stare.

They had heard the first one’s shriek.

Seeing that, Gray muttered under his breath as he tried to pull the needle from his flesh.

’...I think I’m about to become part of their family,’ he said quietly, ’with their needles filling my body.’
