Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Noah Returns

The knock came soft at first. Then harder. Then desperate, a fist against wood.

Lucian’s arm tightened around my waist.

"Don’t answer."

"It’s barely six in the morning," I whispered.

The knocking turned into a palm sliding down the door. A voice, muffled and broken, filtered through.

"Lucian. Please. I know you’re in there. I saw the Jeep."

Lucian went rigid. His breath stopped against my neck. Then his heart kicked against my shoulder blade.

"Who is it?"

But he was already moving. He threw off the blanket, grabbed his jeans, and struggled with the zipper. I pulled on my sweater. By the time I reached the living room, Lucian had the door open.

Noah Carter stood in my hallway.

He looked like he’d been chewed up and spit out by the last three years. His hair was too long and matted to his forehead. His jacket sleeve hung torn at the shoulder. Bruises bloomed across his jaw in yellow and purple. A cut split his lower lip.

But his eyes were the worst. Hollowed out. Red rimmed. Like someone had scooped out all the hope.

"Hi," Noah whispered.

Lucian didn’t move. His hands curled into fists, then opened.

"I know I shouldn’t be here," Noah said. His voice cracked. "I followed you from the warehouse. I waited until I knew you were both alive. I just... I needed to see your face."

Lucian laughed. It was a terrible sound.

"My face?" He stepped forward. Noah stepped back. "You needed to see my face?"

"Lucian..."

"Three years. Three years, Noah. Do you know what that looks like?"

He grabbed Noah’s collar and yanked him into the apartment. Noah stumbled over the threshold. Lucian kicked the door shut.

"Your mother made me dinner every Sunday. Your father taught me things. Amara teased me like I’d always been there. You sat across from me in that library when I was nine and said, ’You’re my brother now.’ No questions. No pity."

He shoved Noah backward. Noah hit the kitchen counter. A glass fell and shattered.

"I trusted you. I chose you. And you put my name on eight hundred thousand dollars without asking me!"

"I know," Noah gasped. "I know what I did..."

"You don’t know anything!" Lucian’s fist slammed into the wall beside Noah’s head. The drywall cracked. "You ran! You left a note like a coward! ’Don’t look for me.’ Like that would make it okay!"

He grabbed Noah’s shoulders and shook him.

"Do you know what they did to me?"

Lucian pulled his shirt aside, exposing the bruises across his ribs and the fresh tape over his side.

"This is from three months ago when I missed a payment. This is from six months ago. They caught me in a parking lot and beat me until I couldn’t stand."

His voice cracked.

"And you know what I thought about? You. I thought, at least Noah is safe. At least his mother is safe. At least Amara is safe."

Noah’s face crumpled. Tears streamed down his cheeks.

"I didn’t know..."

"Of course you didn’t know!" Lucian shoved him again. Noah slid down the counter until he was sitting on the kitchen floor. "You didn’t want to know! You were too busy hiding while I sold everything I had to keep them from burning your house down!"

Lucian towered over him, his chest heaving.

"You didn’t care about your sister. You didn’t care about your mother. You put them all in danger. You put me in danger. And then you looked away while they tore me apart."

"I chickened out," Noah whispered. He pressed his palms to his eyes. "I was in the garage, Lucian. Engine running. Door closed. I was going to end it."

His shoulders shook.

"Then I thought about your face. Nine years old. In that library. You chose me. You made me family. And I did this to you."

He looked up, tears covering his face.

"I couldn’t face it. I couldn’t watch you hate me. So I ran. I told myself I was protecting you. But I was protecting me. I was always protecting me."

Lucian stared at him.

"I sold her rings," he whispered. "My mother’s rings. The last pieces I had. I stole from my father. I let him think I was garbage. I let him hate me. And you were where?"

"I know," Noah sobbed. "I can’t fix it. But I’m here now. I’m not running. I’ll take it. I’ll let you hate me. I’ll stand here and feel every second of what I did to you. Just... don’t tell me to leave again."

Lucian’s face crumpled.

He dropped to his knees and pulled Noah into a crushing hug. It wasn’t gentle. It was two wrecked men colliding, holding each other up after years of falling apart.

Noah sobbed into Lucian’s shoulder. Lucian squeezed his eyes shut, his jaw trembling.

"I thought I lost you," Lucian gasped. "I thought you were dead. I thought they killed you."

"I’m here," Noah choked out. "I’m here. I’m sorry."

I stood by the bedroom door, tears streaming down my face. It felt like I was watching something sacred and terrible. Two broken boys who had chosen each other, finally choosing to stop breaking alone.

Then Noah pulled back. His face was swollen, but something new was in his eyes.

Fear.

"Lucian," Noah said, his voice low. "There’s something else. The drive I told you about. The evidence. It’s not just names and transfers."

Lucian wiped his face. "What do you mean?"

"They have a ledger. A physical book. Every bribe. Every cop on their payroll. Every judge. Every account." He swallowed. "And I know where they keep it."

Lucian went still.

"Where?"

Noah opened his mouth.

My phone screamed.

We all jumped. I grabbed it from the counter.

Unknown number.

A text. Not words. A video.

I pressed play.

The camera was shaky. Dark. A room I didn’t recognize. Then a figure moved into the frame.

Amara.

She was tied to a chair, her mouth taped, her eyes wide with terror. A bruise darkened her cheek.

Beneath the video was a single line:

The drive was a nice try. But we still collect. Bring the ledger location. Or we start sending pieces.

The video ended.

Noah’s face went gray. He shot to his feet.

"No. No, no..."

Lucian grabbed his arm. "When did you last see her?"

"Three days ago. I told her to stay inside. I told her..." Noah’s voice broke. "Oh God, Lucian. They have my sister."

Lucian looked at me. His eyes were dark, terrified, furious.

And I realized, with a sickness in my stomach, that the reconciliation had lasted less than five minutes.

The war was just beginning.
