Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Silent Guardian
"Who," Lucian said again, his voice low and dangerous, "is Ezra?"
I reached for the phone, but he held it a beat longer than necessary, his eyes flicking over the message before handing it back.
"It’s nothing," I said, sliding it into my pocket with hands that weren’t quite steady. "An old problem. I’m dealing with it."
"That didn’t look like nothing." He crossed his arms, studying me with an intensity that made the hallway feel smaller. "You’ve had that same look on your face for two days. The one you had in the coffee shop parking lot."
My stomach dropped. "You saw me there?"
"I was picking up a client for my father a few doors down," he said. "I saw you walk out looking like you were about to be sick. You got in your car and just sat there. Didn’t drive off. Didn’t move. For almost ten minutes."
"You were watching me that whole time?"
"I was worried," he said simply. "Tell me who he is, Eliora."
"It’s complicated."
"Everything about us is complicated," he said, something almost gentle creeping into his voice. "One more complication won’t break anything."
I hesitated, weighing how much of myself I was willing to hand him. But the exhaustion of carrying it alone for months finally won out.
"His name is Ezra," I said quietly. "We dated a long time ago. It ended badly. He has my nudes. He’s threatening to send them to my family. To James. To you."
Something dark passed behind Lucian’s eyes.
"How much does he want?"
"That’s not the point..."
"How much?"
"Ten thousand," I admitted. "He wants it by tomorrow, eight o’clock."
Lucian’s jaw flexed.
"And if you don’t pay?"
"He sends everything to everyone I care about." My voice cracked on the last word. "I already paid him once. I thought it would be over."
"It’s never over with people like that," Lucian said, quiet and certain. "They don’t stop because you gave them what they wanted. They stop when there’s nothing left to take."
"That’s comforting."
"I didn’t say it to comfort you." He stepped closer, the warm scent of his cologne wrapping around me. "I said it because you need to understand what you’re dealing with. This isn’t a problem you solve by paying once and hoping."
"Then what do I do?"
"You don’t do anything. Give me the details. The account, the number, whatever he sent you."
"Absolutely not." I stepped back, putting space between us. "This is my problem, Lucian. Not yours."
"You made it my problem the second his name showed up on your phone while you were standing in my house."
"That’s not fair."
"Maybe not," he said, "but it’s true."
I studied him, searching for whatever angle he was working, because surely there had to be one... nobody offered ten thousand dollars for a woman they’d known only a few weeks.
"Why do you even care?"
Something flickered across his face before disappearing.
"Because I know what it feels like," he said finally, "to have someone hold something over your head. To feel like there’s no way out that doesn’t cost you everything."
"That sounds personal."
"It is." He didn’t elaborate, and I didn’t push.
I refused to give him anything more that night... no account, no number, nothing. I told myself the conversation was over, that he’d let it go the way most people did after hitting a wall.
I didn’t yet understand that Lucian wasn’t most people.
⸻
Two days later, my phone buzzed with a text I hadn’t expected.
Ezra: Delete my number. We’re done. Don’t contact me again.
I stared at it, reading it three, four times, waiting for the catch, the follow-up threat, the demand that always came next. It never came.
I called Priya immediately.
"He just... stopped," I said, pacing my kitchen. "No more texts. No more threats. Nothing."
"Maybe he got scared," Priya offered. "Maybe he realized he’d pushed too far."
"Ezra doesn’t get scared," I said. "Ezra gets greedy. This doesn’t make sense."
I hung up and immediately dialed the one other number I suddenly suspected.
"Lucian."
"Eliora." His voice was easy, unbothered, exactly the tone of a man who had no idea what I was about to ask.
"Did you do something?"
A pause, just half a second too long.
"Do something about what?"
"Don’t," I said. "Don’t do that. Ezra stopped texting me. Just like that. No explanation, no more demands. What did you do?"
Another pause.
"I had a conversation with him."
My stomach flipped.
"A conversation. How did you even find him, Lucian? I never gave you his name, his number, anything."
"I didn’t need you to," he said. "I followed him the day I saw you outside that coffee shop. I wanted to know who he was."
"You followed him?"
"Back to where he was staying. It wasn’t difficult."
I sat down hard on my kitchen chair.
"Tell me you didn’t pay him."
Silence.
"Lucian."
"It’s handled, Eliora."
"That’s not an answer." My voice rose, fury and something far more dangerous tangling in my chest. "How much did you give him?"
"It doesn’t matter."
"It matters to me!" I stood, pacing again, the phone pressed to my ear. "You had no right. This was my problem. My mess. I never asked you to fix it."
"You didn’t have to ask," Lucian said, quiet and unshaken. "I wasn’t going to stand there and watch someone destroy your life over a debt he racked up gambling while you had no way to stop him."
I froze.
"How do you know he racked up debt gambling?"
Another pause. Too long this time.
"Lucian." My voice dropped, something cold sliding down my spine. "How do you know that?"
"I told you," he said carefully, "I had a conversation with him."
"That’s not what I asked."
The silence stretched long enough for me to hear my own heartbeat, long enough for me to understand, with sick certainty, that whatever answer he was refusing to give mattered far more than anything Ezra had ever threatened me with.
"Eliora," he said finally, his voice low and careful. "There are things about me you don’t know yet. Things I’m not ready to tell you."
"Then when will you be ready?"
"I don’t know," he said. "But it won’t be tonight."
