Chapter 206: Chapter 203: Yan Character Inheritance
Yao Ying was also startled to see Sun Yaowen and hurried forward to greet him. "Dean Sun, what brings you here?"
"Er, I need to see Feng Hao about something," Sun Yaowen said, looking slightly embarrassed. "And... I hear you’re working here now. In that case, I’ll leave the shop in your hands."
"You can count on me, Dean." Yao Ying gave a charming smile, her beautiful eyes glancing thoughtfully at Feng Hao.
Feng Hao couldn’t be bothered with idle chit-chat. After giving a few simple instructions, he pulled Sun Yaowen out of the shop.
Watching their departing figures, Yao Ying frowned and muttered to herself, ’Wasn’t he expelled? Why would Dean Sun be looking for him?’
’Who cares? It’s more practical to just focus on making money.’ Yao Ying’s lips curled into a smile. She expertly turned on the MP3 player on the counter, and with the pleasant music playing, she began her workday.
Perhaps it was because she was getting paid, but she found that she was starting to love this job.
Of course, work was work. ’The grudges I need to settle still need to be settled.’
...
Meanwhile, after leaving the shop, Feng Hao and Sun Yaowen boarded a Mansa Vehicle and headed directly for the main combat department of the Five Provinces Academy.
Inside the Mansa Vehicle’s cabin, Sun Yaowen sat in the passenger seat, sizing up Feng Hao with great interest. "You know, you’re really something else, kid. Not only did you defeat Bai Yin, but you even got Yao Ying to work for you. If those brats back at the academy found out, they’d die of envy."
"Like I said, it’s called personal charm," Feng Hao bragged while driving the Mansa Vehicle.
"Heh." Sun Yaowen chuckled and shook his head, then asked, "Speaking of which, how did you defeat Bai Yin?"
"I beat her, that’s all there is to it. Why do you need to know the details?" Feng Hao retorted, pursing his lips.
Sun Yaowen rolled his eyes. "Don’t give me the runaround," he said, annoyed. "Spit it out. How did you beat Bai Yin?"
Feng Hao grinned. "It was nothing special. Let’s just say my cultivation path is a natural counter to hers."
"It does seem like a bit of a counter." Sun Yaowen mulled it over for a long moment before Feng Hao’s meaning seemed to dawn on him. He smiled in realization. "That explains it! That girl Bai Yin even acquired Elder Yun’s Wind Spirit. There’s no way she should have lost to you otherwise."
"Wind Spirit?!" Feng Hao froze, asking in shocked disbelief, "Bai Yin was using a Wind Spirit that day?"
"What else could it have been?" Sun Yaowen chuckled knowingly. "Bai Yin is Elder Yun’s Direct Disciple. It’s perfectly normal for her to be aided by a Wind Spirit."
Feng Hao was secretly astonished. ’I’d heard that one of the academy’s Supreme Elders possessed the legendary elemental essence, the Wind Spirit, but I never expected it to be Elder Yun.’ Recalling the strange, sinister wind from that day, he still felt a lingering fear.
"Can you just give a Wind Spirit to someone else?" Feng Hao asked, frowning.
"Of course not," Sun Yaowen explained casually. "To put it bluntly, a Wind Spirit is a type of spirit soul. Once it merges with a Genetic Tree, it’s incredibly difficult to separate. Elder Yun’s Bone-Eroding Wind Spirit is notoriously hard to tame. Bai Yin only managed to obtain a mere sliver of its soul. If she had the complete Bone-Eroding Wind Spirit, do you really think you could have beaten her?"
Feng Hao couldn’t help but gasp. ’If a mere sliver of its soul is that powerful, just how strong would a complete Wind Spirit be?’
’No wonder everyone says elemental essences are badass. Now I see they’ve really earned that reputation.’
"Wait, that’s not right." Feng Hao suddenly frowned, his eyes filled with confusion. "If a Wind Spirit is so hard to separate, how did Bai Yin get that sliver of its soul?"
"Difficult doesn’t mean impossible," Sun Yaowen said, annoyed. "Besides, there’s the Academic Federation’s [Yan] Character Inheritance."
"The [Yan] Character Inheritance?" Feng Hao was dumbfounded.
Sun Yaowen looked utterly exasperated. "You spent time at the academy, and you don’t even know what the [Yan] Character Inheritance does?"
Feng Hao gave an embarrassed smile and looked at Sun Yaowen curiously.
Sun Yaowen shook his head in resignation and began to explain seriously. "The five great sects of today each have their own inheritances—oh, right, and your Thief God Hall. The Academic Federation, however, only has one: the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern."
"Only one inheritance?" Feng Hao asked, stunned.
"Don’t underestimate the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern. On the strength of this one inheritance alone, the Academic Federation holds its position as the head of the five great sects. Of course, the All Living Beings Sect is also a factor." Sun Yaowen looked up and asked, "Do you know why that is?"
Feng Hao knit his brows in thought. "Because the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern is extremely powerful?"
"No, no, no." Sun Yaowen chuckled and shook his head. "From a pure combat perspective, the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern isn’t as strong as the single-character Demon Patterns of the other sects. The reason the Academic Federation holds such a high status is because of the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern’s powerful ability to pass on inheritances."
"Ability to pass on inheritances? What do you mean?" Feng Hao asked, not understanding.
"The ability to pass on inheritances is just that—the ability to pass them on to others. As you know, there are only two ways for a Mage to acquire a Secret Technique. The first is to comprehend and build the framework themselves. The second is to learn another person’s framework."
"But the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern enables a third method: directly imparting the Secret Technique’s pathways to a successor. In theory, any Secret Technique, once integrated with the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern, gains the ability to be directly passed on."
The more he listened, the more shocked Feng Hao became. ’Holy crap, isn’t that just like a class trainer NPC in a video game?’
’With such a brutally effective inheritance ability, it’s no wonder the Academic Federation became so powerful. To put it bluntly, in terms of practical value, the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern completely blows all the other single-character Demon Patterns out of the water.’
’As long as the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern exists, their techniques can never be lost or fall into scarcity.’
Sun Yaowen smiled and continued, "Of course, all single-character Demon Patterns have multiple facets. The inheritance ability is just one of its effects. The [Yan] Character Demon Pattern can also accelerate energy transformations—for example, speeding up the reversal of a Secret Technique, increasing combustion efficiency, quickening freezing speeds, and so on."
"HISS~!" Feng Hao sucked in a sharp breath.
’Holy crap, who said the [Yan] Character Demon Pattern was weak in a fight? Its other effects are clearly powerful as hell!’
"Now do you see why the Academic Federation can lead the five great sects with just a single inheritance?" Sun Yaowen asked with a smile.
Feng Hao nodded subconsciously, then asked curiously, "So, could I get the [Yan] Inheritance?"
"Of course. All you have to do is come back to the academy," Sun Yaowen said, his voice laced with meaning.
"Er, on second thought, never mind," Feng Hao said, clicking his tongue.
Sun Yaowen sighed and shook his head. Truthfully, he really hoped Feng Hao would return to the alchemy department. However, he respected Feng Hao’s decision more. After all, he was just an Alchemist and didn’t like to get involved in the messy politics between the sects.
Before they knew it, the Mansa Vehicle had landed at the main combat department.
Led by Sun Yaowen, Feng Hao stepped into the legendary Main Courtyard Cabinet for the very first time.
In the conference hall where the academy’s top brass usually met, only the head dean, Xuchang, and a few elderly men were present. Bai Yin’s master, Elder Yun, was among them.
When they saw Sun Yaowen lead someone in, the gazes of all the Elders quickly fell upon Feng Hao. While the other Elders’ reactions were mild, the looks from Xuchang and Elder Yun were particularly strange.
"I’ve brought him to you. The rest is for you all to discuss."
Sun Yaowen didn’t waste any more words. After leading Feng Hao in, he nonchalantly found a seat to the side, closed his eyes, and began to rest.
