Chapter 49: Chapter 50: Buying Chicks
"My phone!" the uniformed woman shrieked, a sense of dread washing over her.
"What are you doing?" Shen Xu hadn’t processed what was happening and stared at Li Yang in confusion.
"It’s unlocked..." Li Yang tossed the two phones in front of Shen Xu. "They haven’t deleted the chat history yet. See for yourself."
Shen Xu took the phone and looked, instantly blowing her top.
It turned out the thief was working with the uniformed woman.
Whenever a customer bought a phone, the uniformed woman would text the thief. Their targets were always phones costing at least two thousand yuan.
The woman would send the information to the thief, and the thief would do the stealing.
"I..." The uniformed woman was so scared she could barely stand.
"Wow, you’re amazing!" Shen Xu looked at Li Yang in surprise, as if seeing him for the first time.
...
After taking the two back to the station for questioning, they confessed everything. Li Yang also got the phone he’d bought back.
Li Yang was busy until eleven at night before he could finally leave.
By the time he got back to the village, it was almost one in the morning.
’They held me up,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, I could have given Aunt Xiu her phone tonight.’
After a good night’s sleep, Li Yang got up early the next morning. Since Han Qiuyue was now sending people to pick up the vegetables, he no longer had to make daily deliveries, so he went to tend to the wild onion bulbils.
He removed the seeds from inside, placed them in fine soil to sprout, and finally watered them with the mixed water from his ring.
By the time he finished, it was around noon.
Li Yang went to Ye Xiu’s house.
Ye Xiu was still cooking.
"Aunt Xiu, are the school repairs finished?" Li Yang asked as he went inside.
"They’re done. Now they’re focusing all their effort on building your mushroom house!" Ye Xiu nodded. "Stay and have lunch here."
Li Yang nodded and went to get the bowls and chopsticks.
After Ye Xiu sat down, Li Yang took out a brand-new phone. "Aunt Xiu, this is a new phone for you."
Ye Xiu’s eyes lit up with delight, but her expression quickly turned stern. "Spending this kind of money on me... You think you can just throw money around now that you’re earning some? Don’t you dare spend like this again."
"It’s fine!" Knowing she was secretly happy, Li Yang grew bolder. "This is nothing. I’m making good money now, a single phone is no big deal."
"So you think you can just spend recklessly because you’re earning money?" Ye Xiu laughed in exasperation. "Don’t give me that. Even if you make a lot more, don’t waste it on me, you hear?"
"Yes, yes..." Li Yang nodded, then said after a moment’s thought, "Aunt Xiu, if I fix up the school and the roads, can I...?"
"You’re still on about that?" Ye Xiu’s face flushed with anger. "Bring it up again and you can get out."
"Okay, okay!" Li Yang gave a dry laugh. "Let’s eat, let’s eat!"
After lunch, Ye Xiu went to the school again.
Li Yang, meanwhile, went over to Zhou Liyun’s house and found her using the feed grinder to make feed.
She’d switch it on, add corn and other ingredients, and the feed would come out the other side.
"You’re getting the hang of it!" Li Yang was impressed and eager to try. "Looks like you’ve already gotten used to it."
"Xiaoyang, this machine is really simple. Anyone could use it," Zhou Liyun said with a laugh. "By the way, I only have a few chickens right now. If we’re going to raise more, we need to get some chicks back here as soon as possible."
"Right!" Li Yang nodded. "We definitely need to go buy some chicks to raise so we don’t fall behind."
After a moment of thought, Li Yang made a decision. "Alright then, I’ll go buy the chicks today. You can stay here and keep making feed."
"Okay!"
Chicks were sold in the township, but generally, there was a much larger selection in the city. So, Li Yang decided to go to the city to buy them.
The live poultry market in the city was bustling with activity.
Li Yang checked several stalls before stopping at one and asking, "How much for these chicks?"
"Six yuan each!" the owner said. "My chicks are top quality. They won’t die."
Li Yang chuckled. ’They won’t die?’
’Any chick can die if it’s not raised well!’
"How about five?" Li Yang said.
"No way. Five is too low, I can’t sell for that!" The owner shook his head, refusing.
Li Yang stood up.
"Hey, young man, don’t be like that. How about five-fifty?" Seeing Li Yang about to leave, the man quickly called out to him.
Li Yang shook his head. ’Does he really think I don’t know the market price? He’s just trying to rip me off.’
"Forget it..." Li Yang shook his head. "I’ll keep looking..."
Just then, he heard a THUD from nearby, followed by someone screaming, "What did you do?! What did you do to my husband!"
Li Yang couldn’t help but turn his head to look.
A crowd had instantly formed. He saw a man in his forties lying on the ground, foaming at the mouth.
A middle-aged woman, who appeared to be his wife, was pointing at a beautiful young woman and cursing loudly.
"It has nothing to do with me!" the young woman frowned. "I was just haggling with him over the price. I never touched him, how could this be my fault?"
"You’re talking nonsense! My husband has always been in perfect health. How could he just collapse from haggling with you? It must have been you! You’re coming to the hospital with me! Hurry up, someone call an ambulance!"
Someone in the crowd was already on the phone.
The young woman’s face was pale with anger. "Stop spouting nonsense! I was just trying to buy your chickens and haggling over the price, how could this possibly have anything to do with me..."
Just then, Li Yang walked over. "It’s true, it has nothing to do with her."
