Chapter 54: Chapter 55: Qin Susu’s Request

"Quite a lot," Zhao Xuechu said, nodding. "I’m in the medicinal cuisine business, so I can use a large quantity. And I’m catering to the high-end market, so I need the very best."

"I have top-grade herbs right here!" The shopkeeper’s eyes lit up.

’This is a huge order. I can’t let her get away.’

"Show me your stock," Zhao Xuechu said with a nod.

"This way, please! Right inside."

Inside was the herb shop’s storeroom. One look confirmed it was filled with stock.

But Zhao Xuechu glanced around and her expression fell. "You don’t have many top-grade goods here, only a small amount. The rest... it’s too low-quality. It doesn’t meet my restaurant’s standards."

The shopkeeper quickly explained, "Miss, we just sent out a big shipment, so our top-grade herbs are running low. But don’t worry! I... just a moment ago, a young fellow said he’d be delivering some of the highest quality herbs here. They’ll arrive soon. Rest assured, you’ll get what you need."

Zhao Xuechu had been searching for a long time and knew how hard it was to find top-grade herbs in large quantities. This piqued her interest. "Alright, then. I’ll leave you my number. Call me when you have the stock."

"Yes, of course!" The shopkeeper finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"I’m leaving," Zhao Xuechu announced, and quickly walked out.

...

Back at the Qin family home, Qin Susu was confronting her father, Qin Gang.

"Dad, the man saved Grandma’s life! And you think just treating him to a meal is enough?" Qin Susu said indignantly.

"Then what?" Qin Gang retorted, clearly annoyed.

"He saved *my* grandmother!" Qin Susu’s face was grim. "This isn’t enough. You have to thank him properly—with several hundred thousand."

Qin Gang laughed in exasperation. "You silly girl. You think your father’s money grows on trees, don’t you?"

"Exactly!" her stepmother chimed in, sneering inwardly. ’This foolish girl actually wants her father to spend his money.’ "Oh, Susu, and it’s not my place to say, but I think that country boy has ulterior motives. He probably saw how wealthy our family is and got close to you on purpose."

"You are not my mother!" Qin Susu shot her stepmother a glare. "Stop calling yourself that in front of me... And he’s not that kind of person! I’m the one who begged him to come treat Grandma. How is that him ’getting close to me on purpose’? Don’t judge him with your own filthy mind."

The stepmother fell silent. Despite the harsh words, she didn’t seem the least bit upset.

In fact, she was secretly pleased.

"Susu, is that any way to speak to your stepmother?" Sure enough, Qin Gang was displeased. "How can you treat your own family this way over some outsider?"

"But—!" Qin Susu fumed. "Either way, you can’t just brush this off! Five hundred thousand! Isn’t Grandma’s life worth at least that much?"

"You!" Qin Gang exploded. "I’m not giving him any money, and that’s final! Now stop this nonsense."

"Qin Gang, I really think that country boy is up to something," the stepmother chimed in again. "As for the money... we can give him a few tens of thousands as a thank-you gift. But we should make it clear he’s to stop bothering our Susu. A simple country boy like him is not worthy of our daughter."

A sense of alarm rose in Qin Gang.

’She’s right, this is a serious matter.’

"Yes, you have a point." Qin Gang nodded. "I’ll arrange a meeting with him. I’ll give him tens of thousands of yuan, and tell him you two are to never see each other again."

"Dad!" Qin Susu panicked. "No... don’t give him money! That’s not what he wants at all."

The stepmother sneered inwardly. ’You really think you can win against me?’

"Then what is it you want?" Qin Gang’s temper flared again.

"Dad, just give me a million yuan," Qin Susu said after a moment’s thought. "I want to start my own company. That should be fine, right?"

"You plan on giving it to him, don’t you?" Qin Gang wasn’t a fool.

"I absolutely will not!" Qin Susu swore. "I swear on my mother’s name, I won’t give him a single cent."

Qin Gang finally relaxed. "You want to start a company?"

"Yes!" Qin Susu nodded earnestly. "You can’t expect me to just wander around aimlessly forever, can you?"

"Qin Gang, a million is no small sum," the stepmother piped up, stirring the pot again.

"If you give it to her, won’t you have to give the same to her little brother and sister?"

"Wu Juan, will you just shut your mouth?" Qin Susu snapped. "Hasn’t Dad given them enough money already?"

Just as Wu Juan was about to say more, their grandmother emerged from the back room. She looked angry. "Qin Gang, has it come to the point where Susu can’t even ask you for money? If you won’t give it to her, I will!"

"Mom, what are you talking about!" Qin Gang forced a wry smile. "I’ll give it to her, of course I will. Susu is my daughter. A million it is, then. I’ll give it to her!"

"Honestly!" Grandma stepped forward and pulled Qin Susu toward the exit. "All you think about from morning to night is money. Would it kill you to part with some?"

Wu Juan’s expression turned sour, but she knew that once her mother-in-law had spoken, there was nothing more she could say.

"Juan, don’t worry," Qin Gang said, comforting her. "Everyone will get their share."

Only then did Wu Juan’s scowl morph into a smile.

’That old hag was on death’s door,’ Wu Juan fumed internally. ’It was almost my turn to be the mistress of this house. Who would have thought some country boy would bring her back from the dead?’

That was why she harbored such deep resentment toward Li Yang.

’If it weren’t for you, *I* would be the one calling the shots in the Qin Family now!’
