Chapter 56: Chapter 57: Selling Medicine
In the dimly lit room.
Xia Lian seemed to radiate a certain energy, giving off a unique glow.
"Xiaoyang, do I really have to take them off?" Xia Lian asked, looking at Li Yang.
Her hand was already on her buttons.
"Yes!" Li Yang swallowed, speaking against his better judgment.
"Alright, then!" Xia Lian quickly unbuttoned her top.
Her skin was smooth, unlike what you’d expect on a woman from the countryside.
Li Yang swallowed hard.
"Should I take off more?" Xia Lian asked again.
Li Yang was about to say yes, but when he turned his head, he saw Xiaomu sleeping there.
Suddenly, as if he’d been caught doing something wrong, Li Yang felt a pang of embarrassment. After a moment, he shook his head and said, "Aunt Lian, you don’t have to. I have a general idea already."
"Huh?" Xia Lian was dumbfounded.
’I’m only half-undressed and you already have an idea?’
"The truth is, your body just isn’t in great shape," Li Yang said, seeing it at a glance. He sighed. "If you focus on conditioning and recovery, you’ll naturally be able to conceive. Besides, you’re not even thirty. Are you really worried you won’t be able to?"
At this, Li Yang suddenly realized something was off. He looked at her in surprise and asked, "Aunt Lian, are you planning to get married?"
There was a trace of reluctance in his voice as he asked.
Truthfully, it was perfectly normal for Xia Lian to remarry. Her husband was dead, leaving just the two of them, and she didn’t have any parents-in-law. It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if she did.
Besides, everyone in the village felt it hadn’t been easy for her to hold on for this long.
"You don’t want me to remarry?" Xia Lian looked at Li Yang with a smile.
Li Yang said seriously, "If you’re asking if I’d hate to see you go, then of course it’s true. But if you really have a suitable person in mind, Aunt Lian, it would definitely be a good thing for you. It’s just a pity... Bishui Village will be losing another beauty."
As he said this, he looked genuinely heartbroken.
Xia Lian was inwardly pleased. She scoffed, "What’s there for you to be sad about? It’s not like I’m yours for the taking."
Li Yang chuckled. "Just looking is fine with me."
"The nerve!" Xia Lian scolded with a laugh. "They’ve always said you’ve been a scoundrel since you were a kid, and it’s true. You’ll say anything without fear of being laughed at."
Li Yang didn’t mind. He had grown up used to talking that way.
"Aunt Lian, if you really do find someone, bring him to meet me," Li Yang said seriously after a moment. "Nothing else, but at the very least, after you’re married, I’ll make sure he doesn’t dare bully you."
Xia Lian froze for a second, then suddenly burst out laughing. "You really can’t bear to see me go, can you?"
Li Yang smiled. "Anyway, I’ve said my piece. If you marry someone else in the future, Aunt Lian, I’ll help keep an eye on him."
Aunt Lian was touched. After a moment, she shook her head. "I was just asking out of curiosity. I don’t actually have any plans to remarry. Besides, aren’t you hiring me now? I can support Xiaomu, so why would I need to?"
Li Yang’s eyes lit up. "Oh, so you’re not remarrying... That’s good, too. Our village is full of outstanding people, after all."
"Oh, please!" Xia Lian shot him a glare. "Our village? Outstanding people? When I was being bullied, you were the only one who dared to step up."
Li Yang gave a bitter smile and was silent for a long time.
Xia Lian was about to speak, but then she heard Li Yang say, "When a man’s pockets are empty, his courage is small. He feels inferior just looking at others. Our village... we’re terrified of being poor."
Xia Lian froze, speechless.
"Alright, I’m leaving!" Li Yang turned and went out.
Early the next morning, Li Yang heard a knock on the door.
He groggily pushed the door open to find quite a few villagers standing outside.
Li Yang was startled. "What is it? What happened?"
"Nothing, nothing..." The villager at the front grinned, pulling a medicinal herb basket off his back. "Xiaoyang, are these herbs okay?"
Li Yang finally breathed a sigh of relief. He had already figured it out: they were here to sell herbs.
"Uncle Min, you didn’t have to come so early!" Li Yang said, exasperated.
He was right. They had most likely picked these yesterday and came first thing this morning to see if they were acceptable. If they were, they’d head back up the mountain to pick more.
"Xiaoyang, just take a look and see if these will do!" Li Min said to Li Yang. "If they’re good, we’ll go pick more up there. There’s a ton of it, and we can earn a bit more money, right?"
Li Yang nodded and took a look. "Excellent. This is top-grade, exactly what I need."
"Great!" Uncle Min was thrilled. "Xiaoyang, so you’re buying now, right? Can I sell them to you now?"
"Of course!" Li Yang nodded. "Everyone who wants to sell, go ahead. We’ll weigh them here and record the amounts. When you all come back this afternoon, I’ll settle the payment with you. How does that sound?"
"Great!" The villagers were ecstatic and all came forward to have their herbs weighed.
It was nine in the morning by the time they finished weighing everything.
After eating some noodles, Li Yang took the two-hundred-plus catties of medicinal herbs and headed straight for the city.
In the city, Zhao Xuechu had once again arrived at the medicinal herb shop.
"Shopkeeper, I’ve already asked several other herb shops. Do you or do you not have any top-grade herbs? If you don’t, I’ll have to work with someone else."
The shopkeeper gave an awkward smile. "Ma’am, could you give me a couple more days? I just spoke with someone yesterday..."
Just as he was speaking, a pickup truck pulled up with a SCREECH. "Boss, I’ve got some freshly gathered herbs that are guaranteed to satisfy you!"
