A moment later, however, she started to panic again. "Did you do something illegal? How could you have so much money? Don’t tell me you got it from selling vegetables!"
The whole village knew that Li Yang bought medicinal herbs and sold vegetables.
But that was a small-time business. How could he have saved up a million so quickly?
"Aunt Xiu, don’t worry..." Li Yang was touched. Since he was ten, he and Aunt Xiu were all each other had. ’Even though she has a fiery personality, she really does care about me.’ "I saved someone, and they gave it to me as a thank you. I didn’t steal or rob anyone for it."
"You cured someone again?" Aunt Xiu calmed down slightly.
"No... I mean, yes!" ’If I tell her about the kidnapping,’ Li Yang thought, ’Aunt Xiu will only worry more.’ He had no choice but to go along with it. "That’s right. So you don’t have to worry. All my money was earned through legitimate means."
Only then did Aunt Xiu let out a full sigh of relief. "That’s good."
"Aunt Xiu, summer break isn’t far off. I’m going to go look for a construction crew now. Once we rebuild the school, then... what about the thing we agreed on?" Li Yang asked.
Ye Xiu finally remembered. Her face flushed, and she tutted at him. "What are you talking about?"
"Aunt Xiu, that’s what we agreed to!" Li Yang said, getting anxious. "You can’t go back on your word, can you?"
No matter how feisty Ye Xiu was, she couldn’t handle this. But she had, in fact, said those words, so she couldn’t exactly accuse Li Yang of overthinking things. After a moment, she huffed, "What I said was, we build the new school *and* pave the roads in our village, right? You’ve only just scraped together the money to rebuild the school, and you already want to bring up that promise?"
"Not at all!" Li Yang breathed a sigh of relief. "I was just worried you’d forgotten, Aunt Xiu, so I came by to remind you. As long as you remember, we’re good."
"You little brat!" Ye Xiu gritted her teeth in exasperation. She suddenly spun around and threw a wet piece of clothing at him. "So you dare to tease me now, do you?"
Li Yang dodged it with a grin and backed away. "Aunt Xiu, I’m heading into the city now to find a company! I’ll make sure we build the best elementary school our village has ever seen!"
Watching Li Yang’s eager retreat, Ye Xiu was left a little stunned.
A sense of panic crept over her.
At the time, she had just said it in the heat of the moment. Besides, she never really took him seriously—how could something like that be possible? But now he’d actually come up with a million. Did that mean getting the money for the roads wouldn’t be so difficult either?
’Impossible...’ She immediately shook her head. ’Money isn’t that easy to make. If it were, everyone would be rich. Why would we all still be this poor?’
But then again, Li Yang really wasn’t like other people. Things that others couldn’t accomplish, he just might be able to.
’If he really pulls it off... do I really have to make good on that promise?’
At that thought, her face turned an even deeper shade of crimson.
"If you’re not afraid, what do I have to be afraid of!" she muttered, biting her lip.
Li Yang drove into the city. First, he went to a dealership and bought a small pickup truck, calling Lao Xu to come over as well.
After buying the truck, he drove off to find a construction crew.
A project this big required professionals from the city.
He soon set his sights on a company called Quanfang Construction Company.
The company didn’t look small from the outside, and when Li Yang walked in, he found the interior was even more impressive.
"Sir, how can I help you?" Big companies really were more professional. Even though Li Yang was dressed plainly, the receptionist approached him politely, with no hint of looking down on him.
"I’d like to fund the construction of a school in my village, and I was hoping to get a quote from you," Li Yang explained.
"Oh, I see!" The receptionist was a pretty young woman, and an expression of admiration crossed her face. She was moved that this plainly dressed man was undertaking such a charitable act. "Please wait a moment, sir. I’ll let our Manager Liu know."
"Great, thank you, miss!" Li Yang, ever the smooth-talker, replied immediately.
The receptionist felt a flicker of delight. Li Yang was probably a little younger than her, but he had a clean-cut look that she found quite pleasant.
In the manager’s office at Quanfang, Manager Liuwan wore a troubled expression.
They were trying to land a major project in the city, but it wasn’t looking like they would get the contract.
Just then, the receptionist knocked and entered. "Manager Liu, there’s someone outside who says he wants to discuss a business proposal with you."
"A proposal for me?" Liuwan frowned. "Who is it?"
"He’s from a rural village. He says he wants to fund a new elementary school there. He’s dressed very simply, but I was surprised to hear he was doing something so noble," the receptionist said, putting in a good word for Li Yang.
Liuwan was taken aback for a moment, her curiosity piqued. "Send him in."
Soon, Li Yang was led into the office by the receptionist.
The moment he stepped inside, his eyes lit up.
Sitting behind a huge desk was a manager who looked to be around thirty years old. She had delicate features, fair skin, and a stunning figure that even her professional attire couldn’t completely conceal. She was an absolute goddess!
"Hello. I’m Liuwan, the manager of Quanfang Construction Company. What can I do for you?" Liuwan asked, tilting her chin up.
