I hate working. I really do.
Ever since the System showed up three hundred years ago and gave everyone superpowers, you’d think life would get easier. It didn't. People still have to buy food. Pay taxes. Work terrible jobs to pay rent.
It was 3:00 AM at General Convenience. The lights buzzed loud enough to give me a headache. I was sitting on a tall stool behind the cash register, resting my chin in my hand.
My job was to stock the shelves but I really didn't want to get up.
I looked across the store. A bag of spicy chips had fallen off the rack in aisle three. It was at least twenty feet away. Instead of walking over there, I held out my hand.
I changed the air pressure in the room a tiny bit and a focused gust of wind picked the bag up off the floor, gently pushing it back onto the hook.
Perfect.
Next was the floor. A drunk guy had come in an hour ago and dropped a large soda near the front door. Sticky brown liquid was pooled on the tiles. The mop was all the way in the back room. That was way too far to walk.
I pointed my finger at the puddle and forced the temperature around the liquid to drop below zero. The soda froze instantly, turning into a sheet of solid brown ice. I grabbed the broom leaning next to my stool, reached over, and smacked the ice. It shattered into pieces. I swept them into a dustpan without ever leaving my seat.
My Blessing is called Master of the Elements. It is an S-Tier Emitter ability. I can control wind, temperature, water, and pressure. Most people with an S-Tier Blessing are out fighting villains or acting like celebrities on TV.
I use mine to avoid doing my chores.
I yawned, put the broom down, and closed my eyes. Just a quick five-minute nap. The store was completely empty anyway.

"Shay!"
I opened my eyes as the door to the back office swung open. Gary marched out, looking furious.
Gary was my manager. He was a Mutant. That meant his Blessing permanently changed his body. He had thick green scales all over his arms and neck, and his eyes looked like a lizard's.
Life is hard for Mutants. Society doesn't like people who look different. Gary had to grind his whole life just to become the night manager of a gas station. He worked eighty hours a week. Because of that, Gary hated me. He hated my laziness more than anything in the world.
"What are you doing?" Gary snapped, stomping over to the counter.
"I'm keeping an eye on the register," I said.
Gary looked at the frozen soda chunks in the trash can. Then he looked at me, still sitting on my stool. His scaly face turned dark green with anger.
"You were sleeping," Gary growled. "Again."
"I was resting my eyes. The lights are really bright."
Gary slammed his fist on the counter. "You are an Emitter, Shay! You have a top-tier Blessing. You can control the weather! You could be a Pro Hero. You could be rich. Instead, you use your powers to sweep the floor without standing up!"
"It's called being efficient, Gary."
"It's called being lazy!" Gary yelled. He took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "That's it. I'm done. I gave you three warnings. You are fired."
I blinked. "Fired? Come on, Gary. Who else is going to work the 3:00 AM shift?"
"I'll do it myself," Gary said, pointing a scaly finger at the door. "Take off the vest and get out of my store. You are a waste of a gift, Shay."
I sighed but didn't argue with him. Arguing took too much energy, and Gary was too stubborn to change his mind. I stood up, unzipped my blue General Convenience vest, and tossed it on the counter.
"Have a good night, Gary," I said.
I walked out of the sliding glass doors and into the cold city night. The wind blew against my face but I didn't feel the cold. I just adjusted the temperature around my body to stay perfectly warm.
I put my hands in my pockets and started the long walk back to my apartment. I wasn't sad about losing the job. I hated that place.
As I walked, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an automated text message from my landlord.
Reminder: Rent is due in three days.
I stopped walking and pulled up my bank app. My balance was practically zero.
Getting fired was annoying, but being homeless would be a lot worse. Sleeping outside sounded terrible. I was going to need money, and I was going to need it fast.
I needed a new plan.
