The gravity was crushing me to where I couldn't lift my arms. I couldn't even turn my head properly.

Level 25. This Lieutenant was much stronger than the terrorists in the ballroom. His gravity Blessing was incredibly powerful.

"You Heroes always run," the Lieutenant sneered, walking closer. "You pose for the cameras, but when the real fight starts, you hide."

I struggled to breathe. My ribs felt like they were going to snap.

I needed to break his concentration. I couldn't use Burn because I couldn't raise my hand to aim it. I couldn't use Wings because the gravity was too heavy; the lift wouldn't be enough to counter the downward force.

I had to use BP manipulation.

I rapidly decreased the air pressure around his boots, creating a small vacuum. Then, I flash-froze the moisture in that vacuum, creating a patch of frictionless ice right under his shoes.

Cost: 5 BP.

The Lieutenant took a step forward to gloat.

His foot hit the ice and he slipped instantly.

He lost his balance and fell backward, his arms flailing. As he fell, his concentration broke. The dark aura around his hand died.

The crushing gravity vanished.

I didn't waste a second and scrambled to my feet, gasping for air.

The Lieutenant hit the floor hard, but his Level 25 stats meant he wasn't really hurt. He immediately rolled backward and jumped back to his feet, his eyes flashing with anger.

"Tricks," he spat. "That won't save you."

He raised both hands this time. The dark aura flared brightly.

I knew what was coming and couldn't let him pin me down again.

I activated my Spell.

Wings.

Cost: 10 BP.

The wind currents wrapped around my body and launched myself off the floor just as the Lieutenant slammed his hands down.

The tile floor where I had been standing completely shattered, caving in from a massive spike of concentrated gravity. If I had been there, I would have been crushed into a paste.

I flew backward, hovering ten feet in the air near the ovens.

"You think flying makes you safe?" the Lieutenant yelled.

He thrust his hands forward and instead of pushing down, he altered the gravity horizontally. He created a powerful gravitational pull, trying to drag me out of the air and straight toward him.

It felt like a giant magnet was pulling on my chest. My Wings struggled against the pull, the wind currents whining as they fought the gravity.

I was being dragged forward, slowly but surely.

I looked at my BP. 130/145.

I needed to attack.

I activated my Skill.

Burn.

Cost: 5 BP.

I aimed at the Lieutenant's face. The air around his head instantly superheated to 500 degrees.

The Lieutenant screamed and threw his arms up to protect his face, breaking the horizontal gravity pull.

I stopped being dragged forward and hovered in the air, watching him.

The Lieutenant was smart. He quickly used his gravity Blessing to push the superheated air away from him, creating a protective bubble of repelled air around his body.

His face was red and blistered, but he was still fighting.

"I'm going to rip you out of the sky!" he roared.

He slammed his hands against the prep counters next to him and used his Blessing to reverse gravity on the tables.

The counters ripped free from the floor and floated into the air, surrounded by the dark aura.

He pointed at me.

The counters shot across the kitchen like bullets, flying straight at me.

I banked hard to the right, using Wings to dodge the first counter. It smashed into the wall behind me, destroying a row of cabinets.

I dove under the second counter, feeling the wind rush past my back.

But there were too many. He was throwing pots, pans, knives, and heavy appliances at me, using gravity to turn the entire kitchen into a deadly weapon.

I couldn't dodge forever. The kitchen was too small for high-speed flight.

I needed to change the environment.

I flew higher, dodging a flying microwave, and looked down at the industrial stoves below the Lieutenant.

They were gas stoves.

I created a precise blade of high-pressure wind and shot it at the rubber gas line connecting the stoves to the wall.

Cost: 5 BP.

The wind blade sliced cleanly through the rubber hose.

Highly flammable natural gas began pouring into the kitchen, filling the air around the Lieutenant.

He didn't notice the smell yet as he was too busy throwing a refrigerator at me.

I dodged the fridge and hovered near the ceiling.

"Is that all you can do?" the Lieutenant yelled, his face twisted in anger. "Run away?"

"I'm not running," I said.

I activated Burn one more time.

I aimed at the invisible cloud of natural gas pooling around his feet.

The 500-degree heat ignited the gas instantly.

The explosion was massive. A ball of orange fire erupted in the center of the kitchen. The shockwave rattled the pots and pans hanging from the ceiling and blew the swinging doors clean off their hinges.

I was hovering high enough near the ceiling to avoid the worst of the blast, but the heat still washed over me, singing the edges of my tuxedo jacket.

I looked down through the smoke.

The industrial stoves were destroyed and the floor was scorched black.

The Lieutenant was lying on his back, surrounded by burning debris. His coat was on fire, and his face was covered in soot.

I waited to see if he was faking.

Slowly, the Lieutenant pushed himself up, coughing violently and slapping the flames on his coat until they went out.

He was badly burned. His HP had to be in the red. But his Level 25 Constitution was keeping him conscious.

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with fury.

"You... little... rat," he choked out.

He raised his hands and the dark gravity aura flared again, stronger than before. It was a suicidal attack. He didn't care if he destroyed the whole hotel; he just wanted to kill me.

The gravity in the entire kitchen shifted pulling everything toward him.

He was creating a miniature black hole right in the center of the room.

The destroyed stoves, broken tiles, flying knives—everything started getting sucked toward the Lieutenant.

I felt the pull instantly. My Wings screamed as I tried to fly away, but the gravitational pull was too strong. I was being dragged backward through the air, straight toward the crushing center of the gravity well.

"Die!" the Lieutenant roared, blood dripping from his mouth.

I checked my BP. 105/145.

I couldn't fly away or use Burn because the gravity would just suck the heat right back into the center.

I had to use the one thing gravity couldn't crush.

Nothing.

I stopped fighting the pull and let the gravity drag me closer to him.

The Lieutenant smiled, thinking I had given up.

When I was only ten feet away, flying right toward his hands, I focused entirely on the space around the Lieutenant's head, completely removing the pressure. I created a perfect vacuum around his face.

Cost: 20 BP.

It was the most expensive manual trick I had ever done.

The effect was brutal.

When you are suddenly placed in a perfect vacuum, the air inside your lungs expands, trying to escape into the empty space. Your eardrums rupture and the oxygen in your blood boils.

The Lieutenant's eyes bulged. He opened his mouth to scream, but there was no air to carry the sound.

He grabbed his throat, dropping to his knees. The dark gravity aura vanished instantly as his brain was starved of oxygen.

The miniature black hole collapsed.

I stopped being dragged forward and hovered in the air, watching him.

He thrashed on the floor for four seconds. Then, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed, completely unconscious.

I held the vacuum for two more seconds just to be absolutely sure. Then, I released it.

Normal air rushed back into the space.

A gold notification flashed in my vision.

[Target Defeated: Black Hole Lieutenant (Level 25)]

[Reward: +1,500 XP]

Another notification immediately followed.

[Experience Points (XP) threshold reached.]

[Level Up!]

[Level Up!]

The warm rush of euphoric energy washed over me. The bruises on my ribs from the training Zone healed. My mind felt incredibly sharp, and the slight burn on my arm disappeared.

I had leveled up twice and was now Level 8.

I canceled my Wings and dropped lightly to the floor.

I opened my Status Screen. I had ten unallocated Attribute Points.

I dumped them all into Wisdom.

Wisdom: 29 -> 39

Max BP: 145 -> 195

Almost two hundred Blessing Points. I smiled, feeling invincible.

I turned around and walked toward the exit door at the back of the kitchen, pushed it open and stepped out onto the loading dock.

The cool night air hit my face. I could hear police sirens wailing in the distance, getting closer. The HRC was finally arriving to secure the hotel.

I didn't wait around and walked down the alley, leaving the chaos of the charity gala behind me.

I survived and got stronger all in complete silence.

I walked all the way back to my apartment. I was tired, my tuxedo was ruined, and I smelled like smoke.

I took a long hot shower and put on a clean pair of sweatpants. I sat on my couch and turned on the TV.

Every channel was covering the attack on the Grand Hotel.

The HRC had breached the ballroom shortly after I escaped. The news anchors were calling it the "Gala Massacre."

Dozens of politicians and sponsors were dead. Several Heroes who had attended the event were severely injured. Black Hole had caused massive destruction before the military finally arrested the survivors.

I watched the screen as the news played drone footage of the aftermath.

The ballroom was destroyed. The crystal chandeliers were smashed on the floor.

Then, the news anchor's face appeared on the screen.

"Despite the tragedy," the anchor said, "we have received reports of incredible bravery from the Heroes inside the ballroom. Aegis Defense has released a statement regarding the actions of one of their Heroes, Frostbite."

A picture of Genevieve appeared on the screen. She looked perfect, with no dirt or blood on her face.

"According to Aegis," the anchor continued, "Frostbite bravely led a group of VIP sponsors into a reinforced panic room during the initial attack, saving their lives."

I stared at the TV.

"However," the anchor said, "not all Heroes survived the night."

The screen changed to a picture of a young man in a cheap black suit. His face was bruised, but he was looking defiantly at the camera.

It was Leo.

"Leonard Spike, a Level 18 Hero from Gadol, was found unconscious in the main ballroom," the anchor reported. "Witnesses say he fought multiple terrorists hand-to-hand to protect the hotel catering staff. He is currently in critical condition at City Hospital."

I leaned forward.

The anchor continued, "In a shocking twist, HRC have issued a warrant for Mr. Spike upon his recovery. Authorities claim he used excessive force during the fight, resulting in unnecessary property damage to the Grand Hotel."

Excessive force? Property damage?

They were going to arrest Leo for fighting the terrorists?

I grabbed my phone and called Captain May. She answered on the first ring.

"Shay," May said. "I saw the report from the kitchen. The police found a Level 25 Black Hole Lieutenant unconscious. The area was superheated, and the gas lines were cut. That was you, wasn't it?"

"It was me," I said. "But that's not why I'm calling. What is going on with Leo? Why is the HRC arresting him for saving people?"

May sighed heavily. "It's politics, Shay. The Grand Hotel is owned by a very powerful executive. Leo destroyed half the ballroom fighting those terrorists. Because Gadol’s Hero division is bankrupt, they can't pay for the damages. So, the HRC is holding Leo personally responsible."

I didn't say anything. I just breathed quietly.

"Listen to me, Shay," May said. "You did good tonight. You survived and took down a Lieutenant quietly. Mr. Graves is transferring a fifty-thousand-dollar bonus to your account right now. Stay in your apartment. Enjoy the money. Let the HRC handle Leo."

She hung up.

I slowly lowered the phone and opened my Status Screen.
