Friday evening arrived and I put on my Hero suit. I made sure it was perfectly clean and shining.

I took a corporate Aegis car downtown. The Church of God Cathedral was located in the center of District 1, right next to the biggest banks and defense contractor headquarters.

The building was massive. It looked like a castle. Huge stained-glass windows depicted Heroes with glowing Blessings fighting shadowy monsters.

There was a red carpet leading up to the wooden front doors. Flashbulbs popped as I stepped out of the car. Hundreds of civilians were standing behind velvet ropes, cheering and holding up signs.

I turned on my "Seasons" smile.

I waved to the crowd, making sure the cameras got a good look at my suit. I walked slowly up the red carpet, stopping to shake a few hands and sign an autograph for a little kid.

"Bless you, Seasons!" an old woman called out from the crowd.

"Thank you! Stay safe!" I replied cheerfully.

I reached the top of the stairs and walked through the doors.

The inside of the Cathedral was even more opulent than the outside. The floors were polished. The pews were made of dark wood. At the front of the room, there was a massive golden statue of the System interface—a giant glowing screen carved out of solid gold.

The room was filled with billionaires in expensive suits, contractors wearing American flag pins, and top-tier Heroes from other mid tier agencies.

This was a networking event.

I grabbed a glass of sparkling water from a waiter and stood near a pillar, keeping my smile fixed in place. I nodded at a few contractors who walked by, but I didn't try to talk to anyone. I just wanted to be seen and then leave.

As I watched the crowd, I noticed someone standing near the back, near the doors.

It was a young woman wearing a dark purple Hero suit. She was trying to blend into the shadows, but her suit was a little too bright for this dark corner.

I recognized her. It was Liza.

She didn't look good. Her suit looked slightly worn. She was pale, and had dark circles under her eyes. She was nervously chewing on her thumbnail.

I was bored, and I didn't want to talk to any billionaires so I walked over to her.

"Hey, Liza," I said, keeping my voice low.

She jumped slightly, startled.

"Oh. Hi, Seasons," Liza said quietly.

"What are you doing hiding in the back?" I asked. "This is a networking event. You should be out there shaking hands with sponsors."

Liza let out a laugh. "Sponsors don't care about B-Rank rookies with stealth Blessings. They want flashy S-Ranks like you."

"Then why are you here?"

She looked away, staring at the golden statue at the front of the room. "I got a lottery ticket from my local parish. I thought maybe... maybe if I came here, I could meet someone from the HRC or a lower-tier sponsor who could give me some work."

I frowned. "Work? You work for Aegis Defense. You have a job."

Liza looked at me like I was an idiot. "Are you serious? You really don't know how the lower ranks work, do you?"

"I guess not," I said honestly.

Liza sighed and rubbed her eyes.

"You are an S-Rank," Liza explained. "You get a massive base salary just for existing. You get paid even when you don't fight. But B and C-Ranks? We only get paid per bounty."

"So? Go catch a bounty," I said.

"I can't," Liza whispered. "The HRC locked down the city leading up to the Tournament. They don't want any bad PR, so they suspended all mid-tier patrol routes. They only want the elites on the streets. I haven't been allowed to work in two months."

"I haven't gotten a paycheck since the rookie evaluation," Liza said, looking down at her feet.

"That sucks," I said. "But you can just get a normal job for a few months, right?"

Liza shook her head. A tear slipped down her cheek, and she quickly wiped it away.

"It's not that simple," she said. "My mom is sick. She has a rare lung condition. The normal hospitals can't fix it. She needs special medical treatments. The ones made from refined Cores."

I knew about those treatments. They were basically magic potions derived from high-level Zone Cores. They could cure almost anything, but they were incredibly expensive.

"How much does the treatment cost?" I asked.

Liza laughed. "Fifty thousand dollars. Without the Aegis corporate subsidy, I have to pay out of pocket. I don't have it. If I don't get the money by next week, the hospital is going to discharge her."

She leaned back against the wall, looking completely defeated.

"The priests tell us to have faith," Liza whispered, looking at the golden statue. "They say God will provide. But God doesn't pay medical bills. Sponsors do."

I stood there, looking at her.

"Fifty thousand?" I asked.

She nodded.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

"Give me your bank routing number," I said.

Liza looked up at me, her eyes wide. "What?"

"Your bank routing number," I repeated, opening my banking app. "Give it to me."

"Why?" she asked, looking confused and slightly suspicious.

"Because I'm going to give you fifty thousand dollars," I said.

Liza stared at me for three full seconds. Then she shook her head. "No. You're joking. Why would you do that?"

"Because I have over half a million dollars sitting in my account," I said. "And I don't really spend it on anything except room service and video games."

"But... we aren't even friends," Liza stammered. "I'm just a B-Rank rookie. You don't owe me anything."

"I know," I said. "But I'm lazy, Liza. And I really, really hate coming to these church events. The networking, the fake smiling, the billionaires... it's exhausting."

I looked her right in the eyes.

"I will transfer fifty thousand dollars to your account right now," I said. "Your mom gets her treatment. You don't have to stress about money for the rest of the year."

"What's the catch?" Liza asked.

"The catch is that you work for me now," I said. "Not officially. But you are going to be my personal PR agent inside the Church of God."

Liza frowned. "What does that mean?"

"It means you are going to use your Camouflage Blessing to hang out in the back of these VIP services every single week," I explained. "You are going to talk to the lower-level priests and rich donors and you are going to spread rumors about me."

"Rumors?"

"Good rumors," I clarified. "You are going to tell them that Seasons is a devout, humble, holy warrior. You are going to tell them I donate to charity in secret. You are going to build my brand within the Church so perfectly that I never actually have to show up to one of these stupid events ever again."

Liza stared at me.

"You want to buy your way out of church?" she asked in disbelief.

"Yes," I said. "Are we doing this or not?"

Liza quickly pulled out her phone, opened her banking app, and read me her routing number.

I typed it in, entered $50,000, and hit send.

My phone buzzed. Transfer Complete.

A second later, Liza's phone buzzed. She looked down at the screen and gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Tears welled up in her eyes again.

"It's there," she whispered. "It's really there. My mom... she's going to be okay."

She looked up at me. "Thank you, Shay. Thank you so much."

"Don't thank me," I said, putting my phone away. "Just do your job. Make me look like a saint."

"I will," Liza promised, wiping her eyes. "I'll make them think you're the second coming."

"Perfect," I smiled.

Suddenly, a bell chimed through the Cathedral. The low murmur of the crowd stopped.

"The service is starting," Liza whispered, stepping back into the shadows. "Good luck, Seasons."

I turned around and walked toward the front of the room, taking a seat in one of the front pews reserved for S-Tier Heroes.

At the front of the room, standing beneath the System statue, was the High Priest. He wore a brilliant white robe covered in gold embroidery.

"Welcome, brothers and sisters," the High Priest boomed. "Welcome to the house of the Divine."

I sat back and listened.

The service was exactly what I expected. The High Priest talked for an hour about the Doctrine of Divine Alignment. How the System was a gift from God to establish order and that those with S-Tier Blessings were chosen by God to lead, and those with weak Blessings were chosen to serve.

Finally, the sermon ended.

"Before we conclude," the High Priest said, opening his arms wide. "Is there anyone here tonight who wishes to walk in the light? Anyone who wishes to officially align their soul with the Divine and join our congregation?"

The room was silent. Most of the people here were already members.

I knew the media drones were hovering near the ceiling, broadcasting this service to millions of religious viewers across the country.

I stood up from my pew.

The crowd gasped softly. The High Priest looked surprised, but a massive smile quickly spread across his face.

I walked up the steps to the altar. I stopped in front of the High Priest and bowed my head slightly, looking perfectly humble.

"I wish to walk in the light," I said clearly, making sure the drones heard me.

The High Priest placed a hand on my shoulder. "Welcome, my son. What is your name?"

I looked up, flashing my perfectly practiced, Charisma-boosted smile.

"I am Seasons," I said.

The High Priest led me to a small pool of water near the golden statue. He dipped his hand in the water and traced a symbol on my forehead.

"I baptize you, Seasons," the High Priest declared loudly. "May your S-Tier Blessing shine as a beacon of God's will for all to see!"

The crowd erupted into applause.

I stood there, water dripping down my face, smiling for the cameras.

As I looked out at the cheering crowd, I knew that I was now officially untouchable.
