Chapter 107: Chapter 107: The Apple Tart (2)

He simply did not want to leave it in its original place.

The book was returned to its previous spot by Dominic, who turned off the light and climbed into bed. But he could not fall asleep, the restless feeling suddenly made him feel irritable.

The fact that Lucien liked him was, naturally, something Dominic had guessed a long time ago. He did not even need to guess; when was this youth not hanging the phrase "I like you" on his lips? But even so, after reading that letter, his mind was filled with the image of Lucien trotting to the door to welcome him every afternoon, his hands still covered in flour, his smiling eyes curving like crescent moons.

Then he recalled the past few days, how the teenager would rest his chin on his hands and watch him eat, his eyes sparkling as he asked, "Is it delicious?", then giggle to himself when he picked up another bite. Lucien had a very good talent for painting, on his free days, he would often sit drawing on the balcony, the wind tangling his hair yet still refusing to come inside. It seemed that every time, the youth loved to act spoiled, wanting to be coaxed before he would obediently go back indoors.

And then there was the previous time, when he sobbed and said he was unworthy, not wanting to rely on the title of fiancé to bully others...

And just earlier, delirious with a fever yet still remembering the apple tart he had made for him...

Dominic suddenly felt a slight headache, and he gently massaged his temples. He had never thought about matters of romance with Lucien. Before this, he had not even thought he would marry Lucien Sinclair instead of Miles Sinclair. It was simply that this teenager could help him relieve his desires, handle that peculiar illness, and let him taste lust. Everything he had done up to this point could be considered a kind of responsibility towards his fiancé.

It was also a kind of debt repayment; he did not want to carry a sense of gratitude that "this person cured my bizarre illness". If asked what feelings he had for Lucien, to be honest, he himself did not know. It certainly did not contain romantic love between a man and a woman. It was just something comforting yet vague, like a glass of warm water left on the table every morning; he could not remember who placed it there, but without it, he felt empty.

He did not name that emotion, nor did he intend to.

However, that letter was like a small knife, slicing a line into the thick wall he had built for so long. Telling him to reciprocate the feelings was impossible, affection was something that could not be forced. But telling him to ignore it... thinking of the youth’s heartbroken face, he could not bear to do so.

Try loving someone?

Dominic had never loved anyone before, and he did not know what love was.

Did he want to try?

The man let out a breath, those two questions swirling in his head, making him truly uncomfortable. While he was frowning in thought, Lucien suddenly turned over beside him. Lucien’s hand reached out unconsciously, touching Dominic’s arm. His fingers were cool, curling slightly when touching the warm skin, then stretching out again, as if seeking warmth.

And the man just let him do whatever he wanted.

A long while later, Dominic suddenly tilted his head to look at the teenager beside him. In the darkness, his face was hazy under the moonlight, quiet as a child’s, no longer grimacing from the fever. His lips were less dry, his breathing steady. He reached out his hand and brushed aside a lock of hair stuck to Lucien’s forehead, his movements gentle as if afraid of waking him.

"Idiot." He whispered: "What is there to be afraid of."

Lucien did not hear him, he was still sleeping, his mouth moving slightly as if dreaming of something sweet.

That night, Dominic had a dream.

He dreamt of an orchard of ripe red apples, bright golden sunlight. Someone stood under a tree smiling brightly, holding a heart-shaped tart. He stepped forward, but before he could touch them, that person turned their back and walked away. He called out loudly, but could not hear his own voice; he wanted to chase after them, but the harder he ran, the further away they became.

When he jolted awake, it was early dawn.

Dominic’s heart was beating very fast, he immediately turned to look beside him. Lucien was still sleeping soundly, his face already having a hint of rosy color, no longer as pale as last night. He pressed the back of his hand to the teenager’s forehead, the fever had broken.

Dominic got out of bed and washed his face to wake himself up. Then he saw himself in the night, his eyes with slight dark circles from lack of sleep, his hair messy.

He opened his phone and saw a message from his assistant sent last night: "President Vance, there is a board of directors meeting at nine o’clock tomorrow morning. The documents have been sent to your email."

Another message sent at six in the morning: "President Vance, do you need a driver to pick you up this morning?"

Dominic replied to his assistant that he would drive himself down, then leisurely went down to the kitchen.

Naturally, there would be no scene of a CEO cooking for his lover here; Dominic could not learn that. And he did not know how to cook either; how many wealthy young masters learned this? Except for Lucien, though he guessed it was only because of the youth’s subsequent hard life that he had to go into the kitchen.

In the kitchen, the servants had already cooked a pot of minced meat porridge for Lucien. After all, they all knew about his fever being so high yesterday that the family doctor had to be called. Dominic’s breakfast was richer, with fish and meat, plain porridge and even pasta; he ate whatever he liked.

Dominic finished his breakfast quickly, then ladled a bowl of porridge, placed it on a tray, and brought it up to the bedroom, putting it on the nightstand on Lucien’s side.

Seeing that the person was still sleeping soundly, he did not wake him up but just wrote a note, reminding him to eat breakfast and take his medicine when he woke up, and then prepare for work. Before leaving the house, Dominic also instructed the staff to go up and check on Lucien every half an hour; if he had not woken up, they should bring the porridge down to reheat it.

Once done, he put on his suit jacket, picked up his briefcase, and went out to the car.
