The System Keeps Making Me Do Indecent Missions [BL, R18]
Chapter 111: Midnight CallsChapter 111: Chapter 111: Midnight Calls
"It is nothing, I just miss my mother a little." Lucien whispered, not knowing how to continue.
Dominic Vance stood at the edge of the bed, his hand still holding a towel to dry his hair. He cast a glance at Lucien, and seeing Lucien’s red eyes, he tossed the towel onto a chair and sat down next to the younger man.
"If you miss your mother, let me call her."
Lucien was stunned: "Call who?"
"My mother. She and your mother are best friends, do you not remember?"
Lucien fell silent. He rummaged through the original owner’s memories, but nothing was clear. Perhaps the original owner knew, but Lucien certainly did not. He only knew that his mother had passed away, but regarding her relationships before her death, Lucien was completely clueless.
Ah, there seemed to be something. He had heard the system mention it previously, it was just a pity that there was too much information, so Lucien did not remember clearly.
Dominic saw Lucien’s silence and did not ask further. He simply pulled out his phone, dialed a series of numbers, and handed the device to Lucien.
"She still often mentions your mother. Once, she even said that if she had known you would marry into this family so early, she would have adopted you a long time ago."
Lucien held the phone, his hands trembling slightly. On the other end of the line rang a warm woman’s voice: "Hello? Dominic? Why are you calling me so late?"
Lucien opened his mouth, but could not say a word. He remembered the last time they met, that powerful and tactful woman when conversing with Father Sinclair. For some reason, the silhouette of Dominic’s mother overlapped with the silhouette of his own mother, he meant his real mother.
Lucien’s voice suddenly trembled: "I... I am Lucien."
The other end of the line was silent for a second. Then Madam Vance’s voice rang out, remarkably gentler. "Lucien? What is wrong? Did Dominic bully you?"
The woman’s soft voice and the familiar silhouette increasingly overlapped. Lucien could not hold back, and tears welled up once again.
"No... I did not..." Lucien softly sniffled: "It has just been too long since I saw you, Madam, so I asked Dominic to call and check on you."
"Oh, you are already engaged, what is this Madam nonsense, you must call me mom. Why are you crying? Did Dominic really bully you?" The other side was a bit noisy, Dominic’s mother was probably busy with something, "I knows he has had a few too many scandals lately, please be understanding of him. Given his position, being clung to by this person and that person, having rumors spread to steal the spotlight is a common occurrence. If you have any grievances, just tell me, do not keep it bottled up in your heart."
"Yes..."
Lucien continued to converse quietly with Dominic’s mother for a long time, only hanging up the phone a while later and returning it to Dominic. The man received the phone, looking at the darkened screen, and clicked his tongue: "Fascinating, she does not even care about this son of hers at all. In my mother’s eyes, there is only you now."
"Do not speak of mother like that..."
"You call her mother quite smoothly, do you not? If you can call her that, the next time you miss her, call mother yourself. Stop crying, your eyes are all swollen. Enough, go to sleep. We are going back to my mother’s house this weekend, if she sees your swollen eyes, I will be dead."
Lucien burst into laughter: "Are you that afraid of your mother?"
"Not afraid. Just annoyed."
He turned off the lights and lay down beside the younger man. Lucien also lay down, but he still turned to look at Dominic in the darkness.
"Dominic."
"Yes."
"Thank you."
"Go to sleep."
Lucien closed his eyes, but his mouth still held a smile. In his heart, the longing for his mother did not disappear, but it no longer hurt as much as before. Because now he knew, his mother still lived on in someone else’s memory. And that person was willing to tell him about his mother, whenever Lucien wanted.
The system chimed in: [Target’s affection progress: 73%.]
Lucien whispered in his mind, "Why did it increase so fast this time? Was it because of the phone call just now?"
[No. It is because the host has shown the target a different side of yourself, I mean your true colors.]
"I was not acting at all, I really missed my mother."
The next morning, when Lucien woke up, Dominic had already been up for a long time. He heard the sound of running water in the bathroom, knowing that Dominic was preparing for work. Lucien sat up, rubbed his eyes, and sat in a daze, lost in thought for a moment.
Dominic stepped out of the bathroom, his dress shirt fully buttoned, his hands still tying his cravat. He cast a glance at Lucien: "You are awake? Your eyes are still a bit swollen."
"It will go away once I wash my face."
"Yes, go downstairs and have breakfast. I have to go to work early."
Saying so, he grabbed his suit jacket and stepped out of the room. Lucien looked at Dominic’s retreating back, naturally finding it amusing. Last night, Dominic was so gentle, yet by morning, he had returned to his usual cold demeanor. But Lucien was used to it; Dominic was simply like that. The man was not the type to be sweet with him all day; moments like last night were probably Dominic’s absolute limit.
He went down to the living room and saw a warm glass of milk and a plate of pastries already prepared on the table. The servant standing nearby thoughtfully pulled out a chair for him, even adding a remark, "Mr. Vance instructed us to make your favorite dish."
Lucien nodded and sat down to eat. He chewed on the pastry, thinking about the weekend; yesterday, the man had mentioned going back to visit his mother this weekend. However, the main estate of the Vance family did not only house Dominic’s mother, but also his father, and perhaps even a bunch of relatives.
Suddenly, Lucien thought that he might have to act in a wealthy family feud drama again.
But whatever, he would cross that bridge when he came to it.
A few days later, Dominic had an evening gathering with his friends at Chris’s private restaurant. Chris was his best friend, and his childhood friend group consisted of a few others, today, almost everyone was present, except for one guy who was a doctor and was busy with a night shift, so he did not come.
As soon as he sat down, Alex, someone quite close to Dominic and famously a playboy, spoke up: "Hey, it has been a while since your family hosted the engagement party until now for us to finally have time to meet. What is going on, suddenly settling down and pulling a stunt that left us completely caught off guard?"
As soon as Alex finished speaking, the whole table erupted in laughter. Dominic took a sip of wine, not bothering to reply. He was used to Alex’s teasing; the more he replied, the more enthusiastic Alex would get.
But Alex would not let it go: "You made us freeze in shock. Out of nowhere, you announced your engagement to a young boy no one had ever met. Then you hid him away in your house, not letting anyone see him. How long do you plan to keep him tucked away?"
Ben, sitting nearby, twirled his wine glass and sneered: "I heard he is very frail and sickly. You guard him like a precious treasure, are you perhaps afraid that others might covet him?"
Dominic set his glass down, his voice ice-cold: "He is truly sick. It is not convenient for him to go out."
"Is he truly sick, or are you afraid that others will see him and covet him?" Chris spoke up, his voice even but his gaze sharp: "I have never seen you care for anyone like that before. Back then, I did not see you dote on Miles Sinclair this much. And I heard that both Lucien’s temperament and beauty cannot compare to Miles."
Dominic remained silent, he did not want to explain much. But these friends of his, every single one of them was as sharp as a hound, and they would not let it go easily.
"Come on, tell us everything. Why are you keeping it all to yourself like that?"
"I am only doing my duty." he said, his voice slow and measured: "He is my fiancé. Besides, he did me a great favor."
"What kind of favor?" Alex asked.
"A private matter."
Ben sneered: "Duty again. Oh, you are a rich young master, being a little bad-tempered would not kill you. You keep chewing on this word duty, I have heard it so much that I memorized it."
Chris did not smile. He stared intently at Dominic, then said, "Duty would not make you wake your mother up in the middle of the night just to ease his longing for his mother."
Dominic froze; he did not expect that matter to reach Chris’s ears. His mother must have told him; she and Chris were very close.
He tried to keep his voice nonchalant: "My mother is his mother’s best friend; it was merely out of convenience."
"What convenience? In the dead of the night, you woke your mother up just to let the little guy talk to her? Do you think I do not know how much your mother struggles to sleep? Once she wakes up, she stays awake until morning."
