The System Keeps Making Me Do Indecent Missions [BL, R18]
Chapter 119: LeaveChapter 119: Chapter 119: Leave
Lucien blearily opened his eyes, blooming with a deeply affectionate smile, and then nuzzled his head against Dominic’s arm a few times. He shifted his body, pretending to bury his head back into the blankets to continue his slumber, yet in truth, he was wide awake. He silently listened to the breathing of the man beside him, and then began to count down every passing minute and second within his mind.
Thirty-five hours and twelve minutes.
That particular day passed by with an uncanny, strange peacefulness. Dominic Vance did not leave the house; he personally cooked porridge, using his own hands to feed Lucien every single spoonful. Surprisingly, the man was actually quite decent at cooking; the bowl of porridge was perfectly seasoned when it reached his lips.
Or perhaps, this was simply a special privilege reserved for characters within a novel.
It was just a pity that Lucien could not eat much; his stomach continuously cramped in agonizing waves, yet he still forced himself to swallow the food down. He needed to maintain his strength; he needed to survive for exactly thirty-six hours so that absolutely everything would unfold according to the predetermined plan.
In the afternoon, when the fever temporarily subsided, Dominic Vance carried him out to the living room, gently placed Lucien down on the sofa, and draped a thin blanket over his body. He sat by his side, his hand still firmly grasping Lucien’s hand, looking as though he was terrified that if he were to ever let go, Lucien would dissipate into sheer nothingness.
"Do you not have to go and handle your work?" Lucien asked, his voice exceptionally faint.
"There is absolutely nothing more important than you."
This was yet another answer that fell entirely outside the realm of his calculations. Lucien remained in silence, truly not knowing how he ought to respond. In the end, he only managed to gently squeeze the hand that was holding his own, and then rested his head against Dominic’s shoulder.
"I am so tired, Dominic."
"Then go to sleep. I am right here."
"You will not go anywhere, will you?"
"I am not going anywhere at all."
Lucien closed his eyes; he did not completely fall asleep, rather he merely wanted to quietly relish the lingering warmth radiating from the man beside him. Lucien was profoundly aware that he did not truly harbor any real affection for this person; the restless, fluttering emotion within his heart was perhaps that exact feeling people often spoke of...
Only when one approaches their hometown do they truly realize the depth of their homesickness.
Upon concluding this world, he would be able to temporarily return to the real world. Perhaps he would re-enter that physical body which was currently entirely hooked up to hospital machinery, or perhaps it would merely be in the form of a wandering soul. Yet regardless of whatever form it took, the very thought still caused Lucien’s heart to give a sharp, painful twinge.
He had never been separated from his family for such an extensive period of time.
Perhaps this entire world was merely akin to a fleeting dream, passing by in the mere blink of an eye. But right at this very moment, on the verge of waking up from the dream, he inexplicably felt a sense of faltering hesitation. There was a touch of homesickness, yet there was also a touch of nostalgia for this very place.
Lucien asked himself whether, during these final thirty-six hours of this life, he ought to let his guard down and indulge himself just a little bit.
It was truly a pity that even if he wanted to, the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak. He was a mere parasite existing within this world, and his ultimate purpose was solely to complete the missions laid out by the system. The future of this world had never contained his presence, and therefore, it was absolutely unnecessary to leave behind such a profound mark.
It was best to let nature take its course, allowing the world to slowly operate along its rightfully destined tracks.
On the second night, the agonizing pain brought forth by the world’s rejection grew worse than it had ever been before. Lucien lay on the bed, his entire body violently curling into a ball, cold sweat pouring out to completely drench the pillows. Dominic Vance frantically called for their private doctor to come, but every single medical test result indicated that the youth’s body possessed no serious pathological conditions whatsoever. It was solely a case of asthenia reaching an entirely illogical extreme.
But Lucien knew perfectly well that the truth was not like that at all. He could intimately feel every single cell within his own body gradually dying off. His soul was being forcefully dragged out of this physical vessel, slowly, excruciatingly, feeling exactly as though someone was using a blunt, rusty knife to carve countless lines into his very flesh.
"Dominic..." He called the man’s name, his voice as terribly frail as a buzzing mosquito. "Hold me."
Dominic Vance immediately laid down beside him, pulling Lucien into his embrace. The man’s arms tightened their grip, seemingly wishing to transfer every last ounce of his own body heat over to Lucien. He seemed to vividly sense the man’s sheer panic, and indeed, Dominic Vance was genuinely panicking.
Never before had Dominic Vance fallen into such a state of absolute helplessness, completely not knowing what he ought to do, with absolutely everything spiraling so drastically out of his control like this.
"Are you afraid?" Lucien softly whispered.
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid that... one day, I will no longer be here."
Dominic Vance’s arms constricted even tighter around him, yet he gave no reply. But that deafening silence was far more terrifying than any spoken words could ever be.
Lucien smiled into the pitch-black darkness. It was a thoroughly weary smile, yet one brimming with meticulous calculation.
"I was only asking a question." He said, his voice entirely weightless. "I will always remain by your side. I promise you that."
That was his very last lie told on that particular night.
On the morning of the third day, Lucien awoke with a profoundly strange sensation. The agonizing pain had completely vanished; his body felt wonderfully light, as if entirely devoid of weight, as if he could float up into the sky at any given moment.
[System notification: The soul extraction process is nearing completion. Remaining time: 2 hours.]
Oh, terminal lucidity.
Lucien sat up, casting his gaze out the window. The dawn was breaking, dyeing the vast sky in beautiful hues of pale pink and a golden yellow glow. Dominic Vance was still soundly asleep beside him, his sharp, chiseled face entirely relaxed in slumber, looking remarkably younger and considerably less cold than he normally appeared on any given day.
Looking at it closely, every single feature of his face was truly exceedingly handsome. He was absolutely worthy of being a main character within a novel.
Lucien bent down, placing a tender kiss upon Dominic’s lips. The kiss was incredibly gentle and sweet, mirroring the parting kiss of a lover right before an eternal separation.
Dominic Vance stirred slightly, yet he did not wake from his sleep.
Lucien laid back down beside the man, wrapping his arms around Dominic’s waist, burying his face into that undeniably warm chest. He closed his eyes and broke into a soft smile.
"Goodbye, Dominic Vance."
[Countdown: 10... 9... 8...]
In his very last fleeting moment, Lucien suddenly thought of something rather strange. He thought about those mornings when he cooked breakfast for Dominic. About those long nights when the man held him to sleep. About the look in Dominic’s eyes when he said I love you to the point of absolute madness. About all those words of endearment he had spoken, not knowing exactly how many parts were true, and how many parts were completely false.
For a brief, passing second, it felt as though his heart was genuinely moved, yet it also felt like absolute self-mockery.
"000, is it because this is my very first time executing a mission that I am so easily affected by emotions like this?"
[Everyone has their first time, you will surely get used to it in the next world. Host, a friendly reminder, do not let your heart be moved by your mission target. You cannot remain by his side forever, and if that man lacks a little bit of proper disciplining, it is not guaranteed that he will remain entirely faithful in the future.]
Lucien gave it no reply.
[3... 2... 1... Initiating spatial transfer.]
A blindingly brilliant white light flashed across his mind, and then, absolutely everything plunged into sheer darkness.
Dominic Vance woke up abruptly from a profoundly bizarre sensation. An overwhelming feeling of emptiness, his heart painfully missing a beat in sheer discomfort. He opened his eyes, instinctively turning his gaze to the side.
Lucien was still lying right there, securely within his embrace, his head resting against Dominic’s chest, his black hair spilling out messily across the pillows. He looked exactly as though he was merely asleep, utterly peaceful, profoundly gentle, and breathtakingly beautiful to the point of heartbreak.
But something was terribly wrong.
"Lucien?"
Dominic Vance called out softly, but he was met with absolutely no response. He gently shook the shoulder of the youth in his arms, only to panic as he discovered that the youth’s body was completely ice-cold.
"Lucien!"
He bolted upright, frantically pulling Lucien fully into his embrace. The youth’s head fell back limply, his pale lips parted slightly, his long eyelashes no longer trembling even the slightest bit. Dominic pressed his ear tightly against Lucien’s chest.
Silence.
Absolute, deafening silence.
His heart had already ceased to beat.
