The System Keeps Making Me Do Indecent Missions [BL, R18]
Chapter 126: The Intern’s Punishment MenuChapter 126: Chapter 126: The Intern’s Punishment Menu
Lucien ran around brewing coffee under the sarcastic gaze of the manager, then had to respectfully offer it to Howard with both hands. After everything was done, he cast a glance at the man who leisurely carried the coffee cup back to his office, and then returned to his own seat.
Lucien returned to his seat, and the old swivel chair let out an annoying squeak. He gently shook the mouse, and the computer screen lit up again after a few minutes of sleep mode. In the bottom right corner, a new email notification popped up.
Sender: Ethan Lee. Subject: "Tasks for today - Urgent".
Opening it, he saw a long, clearly numbered list that looked just like a punishment menu for interns. Printing documents for the marketing department, spell-checking thirty presentation slides, updating customer data into an Excel file, photocopying contracts for the legal department, resizing images for the content department, and reorganizing the old design resource storage. Overall, they were all trivial chores, and the last line was even highlighted: "Deadline 5 PM today. Thank you."
[Hey, over a dozen tasks in a single day?] 000 flapped its wings right next to his ear, its shrill voice unable to hide its indignation. [These are all trivial chores, none of them have anything to do with design. Is Ethan planning to work you to death here?]
Lucien could not help but reply with a look of disdain: "Is this not the world created by you?"
000 fell silent for a moment before explaining: [This was distributed by the main world system, it has nothing to do with me.]
"Ha, it is still from the same family as you."
Seeing that chubby water droplet pretending to glisten with tears, Lucien did not even bother to look at it anymore. He just carefully replied to the email he had just received.
[Are you not going to fight back at all? If you let Ethan bully you like this, he will assign you double the workload tomorrow, just wait and see.]
"Fight back for what?" Lucien had already opened the first Excel file, his fingers gliding across the keyboard. "So that he has another excuse to run up to Howard’s office and say that I am incompetent, incapable of doing the simplest tasks, and then have more reasons to kick me straight out of the company? I have seen this trick many times, do you think I am still unfamiliar with it? The more I jump in to argue, the more I fall into his trap."
[But how do you plan to finish in time? Over a dozen tasks in just a few hours?]
"Just shut up and you will see."
He began with the thirty presentation slides. The moment he opened the PowerPoint file, he saw spelling errors everywhere. "Design" spelled as "Dezign", "Customer" spelled as "Custmer", and "Budget" spelled as "Buget". These stupid mistakes were so ridiculous that if it were anyone else, they probably would have cursed by now. But Lucien did not. He merely copied the entire content into Word, turned on the automatic spell-check feature, and then corrected every single error one by one. His fingers typed at a steady pace, neither too fast nor too slow; every click of the mouse was an error fixed. It took less than twenty minutes for all thirty slides to be completely clear of spelling mistakes.
Moving on to the customer data Excel file, things were even worse. It used old formulas from ages ago, demanding manual entry for each row and column; cells were left blank, while some rows were duplicated three or four times. If this file had been left for the original host to do, he would surely have had to sit there all day to finish it. Lucien furrowed his brows, staring at it for a moment, then quickly typed out an automated macro script. With one run, all the data automatically updated cleanly, the empty cells were filled, the duplicated rows were eliminated, and the spreadsheet became as neat as if it had just been processed by a data specialist.
000, which had been hovering beside him observing, finally could not hold back its voice: [When did you learn these Excel macros? I remember you did not study this in college.]
"When I was hospitalized, I was too bored with nothing to do, so I studied online," Lucien replied, his eyes not leaving the screen. "Who knew there would actually be a day when I would use it."
[It seems you are not that useless after all.]
"Shut up."
By noon, more than half of the list had been handled by Lucien. He stood up a few times, hugged the stacks of documents down to the photocopying room on the lower floor, counted the exact number of copies, and carefully stapled them before carrying them back. As he walked past Sarah’s desk, the colleague specializing in illustration and the only person in the room willing to speak decently to him, Sarah looked up at him with a familiar, sympathetic gaze.
"Did Ethan give you that whole pile of work again?"
"Yes, but it is not that much, Sarah."
"That Ethan..." Sarah was about to say something but stopped. She quickly glanced toward the door as if afraid someone might hear, then sighed. "Never mind, I will not say much. Hang in there, and remember to eat lunch, do not skip meals."
"Yes, thank you, Sarah."
Sarah turned away, leaving a faint scent of tea in the air. Lucien watched her figure for a moment before continuing his work. The next task was to reorganize the old design resource storage at the end of the corridor. He pushed the door and stepped in; the smell of paper dust and old printer ink hit his nose, causing him to sneeze three times in a row. Cardboard boxes were piled up, old iron shelves were covered in dust, everything was messy without any order.
Lucien began to sort them out.
Old portfolios on one side, catalogs on one side, internal publications on one side, and the defective test prints were thrown into the trash bin. His hands flipped through each stack of documents, dusted them off, and neatly arranged them on the respective shelves. While bending down in the corner of the room, he suddenly touched a thick document folder wrapped in a black leather cover; the cover material was sturdy and seemed much more expensive than the surrounding items. The outside had no title other than the words "Damian Thorne - Personal Project" handwritten in black ink, the handwriting firm and somewhat cold.
Actually, at first, Lucien had also secretly cursed this nonsensical world a few times. How could a world with advanced technology have this kind of printed document storage room that still needed to be reorganized? But when he saw that stack of documents, he suddenly understood a bit of the main world’s intention.
There was some information that could not be openly stuffed into a host from another world like him, so it would use the least suspicious way to deliver it to him.
It was just that Lucien did not look at it right away; he placed the document folder back in its original position, put a stack of catalogs on top to hide it, and then continued finishing the remaining work.
By four o’clock in the afternoon, all fourteen tasks on the list were completed. He checked it one last time, neatly organized the files into their corresponding folders on Google Drive, and then drafted a short report email to Ethan: "I have completed all the tasks. The link is attached below." After clicking Send, he leaned back in his chair, twirling the pencil in his hand. The afternoon sun had started to turn yellow, dyeing the tall buildings opposite in a pale orange color. The computer screen was still bright, the Illustrator software was still open with a completely blank file. Today, he had not drawn a single decent line.
Suddenly, a hand lightly patted his shoulder from behind. Lucien was not truly startled; since stepping foot into this company, he had always been on alert, but he still deliberately twitched his shoulder slightly, acting a bit surprised, before turning his head.
Ethan Lee stood there, with the familiar intimate smile on his lips that Lucien had seen dozens of times today. But this time, in the depths of Ethan’s eyes, Lucien caught a cold glint, a flash of wariness that passed very quickly, so fast that he would have missed it if he was not paying attention.
"I just checked your email," Ethan said, intentionally speaking loud enough for the colleagues around to hear. "Good job, I did not expect you to finish everything so quickly. Over a dozen tasks done in a day, really impressive."
He patted Lucien’s shoulder one more time, and on this occasion, his hand descended with a noticeably heavier amount of force, acting as if he deliberately wanted to test Lucien’s genuine reaction.
